Excellent exercise on left/right separation. Another difficult I experienced is up-bow vibrato near the frog. A good exercise I came up with is to play up bow near frog, keep the bow off the string and maintain the vibrato. It's quite similar to your exercise.
I've watched all of your videos on vibrato and have been taking lessons but my vibrato is still so poor. I've been playing since I was a child (i'm now 51) but am now unlearning some bad habits. I can not get the arm vibrato though... very frustrating. Any other tricks you can share that might work for me?
hi ive been trying to learn violin im a multi instrument musician . i was wondering if you give private lessons . p.s i was wondering where do i put the tapes on my violin for practice ?
For placing tapes on the violin I would suggest using a electronic chromatic tuner and with the D string in tune placing tape at the notes of the D string at E, F#, G, and A. You can do this for any string I just like using the D string. This only shows where a few of the notes go. I preferably do not put tape on mine or any of my students violins instead they should learn by listening where to put fingers, OR use pencil as it will rub off over time.
Dear Todd, I have a bit of a question regarding this video. I think it might be useful for many students to touch upon it. I've noticed that especially about 4:40 your violin shakes quite a lot with vibrato - in other words, left hand causes violin to shake, but it doesn't send the bow jumping (which is the problem I often have). Should one put a lot of effort to avoid that shaking or is it impossible to keep it really still and one needs to do something else to keep the bow from jumping?
Hi assa123assa123, An arm vibrato will shake the violin more than a hand vibrato. To compensate, a player will have to stabliize the violin with the head and shoulder, which may require more effort. Many people believe arm vibrato is risky do the extra effort required, however like all things, that is debatable.
To keep the bow from shaking, the bow has to be firmly "into" the string. While that may seem dangerous, it is required to produce a large sound, either with arm or hand vibrato.
Cont... To get the bow "into" the string, try to use the natural weight of the arm instead of pressure or squeezing. I have several videos on tone production that discuss the way to achieve this.
I have that same problem of the violin shaking, and I use arm vib mainly. However, I notice that the shaking depends on the direction of my vib. If I vib in the direction along the violin, there's almost no shaking (because there's no space for it to shake--my neck is in the way, directly blocking the movement). But when I'm not careful and vib'ing fast, I go off that direction and the violin shakes. Still working on it...
@assa123assa123 Another thing that might help in getting more into the bow that helps me in particular is lifting your bow arm at a higher angle in a comfortable spot in order to get that arm weight. Although, it also depends which string you are on, so don't forget to consider that.
I have a problem with my instrument, and need an opinion from a professional. I play a 4/4 restaurated violin, and recently the G, D, and A string buzzes. I only have a fine tuner for the E string, but I already checked if it has any contact with body of the violin. Could the buzzing be caused by type of string, or could fall weather's humidity affect the violin?
Thank you for posting this videos, they are very useful to me. I have a couple of questions, if you do not mind: How you now that is time to change the strings? What is better for an intermediate non professional player, synthetic or gut strings? I have a German violin that costs me about 1000 dollars. Do you have a video about that topic here or somewhere else?
Thank you for your time. I would like to ask you about bowing angles, I've noticed some players bow with the hairs pointing outwards towards the neck, but you and most players bow with the strings pointing towards the bridge. I've heard the difference is only tone. Can you explain this a little bit thanks. Anything you need let me know.

You should have much more subscibers because you are doing a very good job, thanks for all your lessons and your comments, some day I am going to postyou a video whith something that I learned from the nothing.
Your video lessons are great! Now, how about make a video that is DESPERATELY needed on the internet and is not available: One focusing on the different tones of different string sets using the same violin. This will help out a lot of people who want to try out a different set of strings but not quite sure which ones they want to spend money on. Afterwards, a video on the various affects of different rosins will make a nice addition to your already amazing collection of tutorials.

Thank you for the new video. I was wondering what you thought about the Dounis daily dozen for warm up. Do you think you might discuss warm up methods a bit?
killerecho, I was just listening to Kreisler this week. Yes, he has total mastery of the vibrato. I've read that he used impulse vibrato instead of wrist, but have never seen a film of him playing, which would be fantastic.
Thank you Todd, it's great to hear your thoughts on this as I'd been wondering about this topic recently. I look forward to future cameo dog appearances!!
Thank you very much again for your time and valuable tips, and for keeping this channel opened. It has become an important support and reference for many students, like me.
