i think, if you read the fluff, a single marine is worth a substantial amount of guardsmen (1000 but don't quote me on it). A guard serves for 30 years, a marine for 300.

IG's damage is increased and the damage is decreased if they are in large numbers. A large army makes them far superior than if they were a single unit. A commissar execution increases their moral to max and increases their damage 4x. A summery execution makes a guardsmen squad do more damage than space marines in range. Not to mention each squad can have 5 plasma guns, with execution, doing over 200 dps each gun.

The sent can kill any non relic vehicle in only a few shots.

The Lemen Russ does more damage than all Eldar and Ork vehicles and has more health. The Chimera is dirt cheap and does 100 dps and you can get them out quciker than any other vehicle in the game.

The trenching ability makes for perfect defence. Three squads of guardsmen in a building sends a volly of plasma gun shots all over the place, oblitering almost any infintry.

The tech priest repairs vehicles faster than all other builders. That + Baneblade=Win.

The assassin can instakill almost any Hero. The Hell Hound does massive AoE damage to mob infintry (Orkz). The Karsikins do more damage than any Eldar range infintry and at a further range. The IG hero can be given 4 priests, thus, making him invincible for about a full minute (all that's needed to kill just about any other Hero). The IG HQ has an ability to see anywhere on the map every 30 seconds (knowing is half the battle).

The Heavy Weapons squad can do up to 400 dps against infintry, vehicles, and buildings. The infintry are extremely cheap and take no time to upgrade. A fully upgraded squad of IG can take out a squad of fully upgraded Ork Shootaz. The basalisk has an ability to insta-kill any non-hero infintry unit under its explosion radius. The Basalisk has the longest range of any vehicle in the game and does the most damage in a single burst (earthshaker round).

Marines are extremely powerful comabatans, but also extremely rare. In each chapter there is only and mostly just 1000 Space Marines, a rough estimation.

Their armor is nearly impenetrable, and their guns, even the standard, are capable of raining hell on the enemy. Not to mention, despite their clunky armor, Space Marines are in fact quite agile and not to mention dangerously fast when they start running.

So to say, marines are kickass. Their small numbers are their main weakness though.
