    yesssssss

  • Man, he's a genious!

  • Anyone else catch the "petrouchka" quote @ 1:14?

  • That is truly one of the BEST Happy Birthday renditons that I have ever heard in my life !!! WOW

  • @dearchrists

They do follow the chords, of curse they Know them by heart!

  • Do they improvvise on the melody only or do they use chords?

  • @dearchrists They have the chords in their hart.

  • just amazing

  • Marsalis- " You mad bro?" trollface.jpg

  • @Spectonimous That is so very wrong and you know it. I can't believe that you could insult a professional sax player like that - better than most people will ever be.

He was not copying - in improv, copying is playing the same rhythms and/or notes as someone else. He was certainly not doing that. The rhythms may have been similar - because all rhythms are repeated all through music - and the notes were similar because you can only play with 12 notes through a few octaves, but "copying" is wrong.

  • @Spectonimous Also keep in mind, in jazz, when you solo after someone it's totally acceptable and expected to borrow ideas from the first soloist. In jazz it's not copying, it's "quoting" or "playing off of each other". They basically take an idea that the first player used and re quote it, then expand on it. These two have been playing together so long that they can play off of each other all day. The collective improv part is a perfect example. It's a beautiful thing to see. Keep swingin!

  • @Spectonimous I sooooo wish I was Marsalis copycat...

  • WTF 5:43 ^^

  • I love the little things, like how Wynton taps his foot and on the 2 and 4 he puts accent's on them.

  • Aren't they just blowing over the A section of Rhythm Changes? They're not playing around with the song, just putting it in a context they already know haha ingenious!

  • this really helped me with my own playing on my trumpet.

  • ..........(speechless silence)

  • @josnator Speechless silence.. for the sake of the many other kinds of silence xD

  • just shook his hand, no big

  • @gr00vytaco The guy speaking french is the translator... he's translating what Wynton says

  • This, my friends, is what music is about.

  • I still don't know how they can do this! Sounds gd.

  • I love the dixieland style collective improvisation. Sounds sooooo good. Wish i could be as good as this man, or afford a monette trumpet, either way lol.

  • He's a dick for talking shit about Miles Davis.

  • @abehammy didn't miles davis talk shit to him in the first place? correct me if wrong, but im pretty sure he did..

  • @abehammy miles davis the wife beater?

  • damn. Im only 14, and Ive been playing trumpet for about.... 5 years? Im no where close to Wynton. Then again, I only play 11th grade stuff (4.0-4.5). And Im in the 8th grade. Anyway, fantastic trumpeting.

  • amazing improvising OMG!! i would have loved to be one of the actual audience!!

  • este hombre essss puffff mi preferido jajaja

  • arghhhh i hope after my 3-4 years study in university for jazz trumpet, i'd someday actually play like wynton

  • Like if "you know what it means to miss New Orleans."

I live 30 minutes away but I feel it everyday.

  • Ahhhhh! My city of New Orleans...

    Or rather our city.

This is the only place on Earth where all of the elements (music, food, history, culture) come together in a beautiful melody called JAZZ.

I love you my city, and the whole world should follow.

  • my birthday was the 6th of dec right on time

  • Found this accidentally - right on time! Never mind the lesson he's giving, in 2 weeks I'm replaying this - all day ! I'll be having Wynton Marsalis play "Happy Birthday" to ME.

  • someone tell me how he comes up with all those ideas.

  • He makes it look effortless. Amazing

  • to play like that sitting down? with your diaphragm being compressed? lol...wynton rocks

  • Wow! That is a really lesson!

  • This video is a perfect example of how saxophone players always fuck up everything

  • very, very, very good!!!! Fantastic improvisation!

  • It doesn't matter what this man plays .... it is how he plays it and it is all good!

  • If only Wynton Marsalis were a little better at jazz.

The earth would be knocked off its axis.

  • dude 16 people deserved some real music shoved up their ass for disliking this

  • is guardala mouthpiece???

  • have you ever hated someone because they were too good?

  • you ain't kiddin' about the dry crowd...they're practically a fire hazard.

I couldn't stop smiling when they were playing. The music really does flow through that man.

  • Master!

  • y va a estar en mexico

    ya quiero ir!!!

  • One of the reasons this cat gets so much flak, is his awesome talent.

And the respect he has for himself and jazz. He is bigger than life and others who are jealous, want to bring him down. This is stupid.

This guy is on the forefront of actually doing something to keep jazz alive and well. To make conditions for live jazz music better. He is a world ambassador for jazz. He is also modeling for the young, how to be an adult and to take responsibiity for life. .

  • so cool!<3

  • THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @DavoBowRowe Hey dude chill out, you're getting more worked up than anyone lol

  • If you know what I mean, a HR Link Tone Edge doesn't give that sound.

  • Hey does anyone know what mouthpiece the sax is using?

I've been wanting a mouthpiece that has a similar type of sound.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBigHeader wat r u talking about

  • so much personality in his sound.

  • buena improvisacion

  • Hehe, nice posture. I guess you can afford to sit like that if you're amazing.

  • @Shrutefan99 amazing is an understatement

  • I wish I was there. T^T

  • Wow! this made me just realise that happy birthday is exactly the same as just a closer walk with thee! I can't believe I didn't know that this whole time!

  • My name is winton! Haha

  • Who is the sax player?

  • I wish the French weren't such moody cunts.

  • @MattTheOak Well said Buddy, they just are!

  • I don't think it was fair for marsalis to let him solo rite after he did. I meaning come on, can anyone follow up on him. NO! Marsalis is just a trumpet God and a musical genius

  • The 13 people that missed the like button can go die in a hole.

  • Comment removed

  • dude this is like the best b day present a musician could ever get!

  • dude their brothers so ya. I'd so love to get some of my musician buddies together and do like a surprise concert thing for like my friends on their birthday. You know what i mean.

  • Its as if they are having a conversation!! This video is so inspiring!! Thankyou!!

  • still the best

  • he is so inspiring,

  • today ist meine cumpleaños

    bonito Geschenk für this day

  • how can you dislike this?

  • i play this one for my kids each year. got 5 kids. they love it. and this is a perfect song for improvising because its got so many gaps to fill. Wynton did a great job - not sure about the other guy cuz he train wrecked that thing - I could tell Wynton was annoyed by it.

  • @1904home

Are you NUTS!!! Victor train wrecked it?!!?!?!? You are not a musician...sorry.

  • @1904home you're an idiot

  • Comment removed

  • OH my bad I just realized you were talking about the guy in the middle, sorry yeah he does suck I mean he played absolutely nothing and you cant even see him.

  • @dmbbf5 You're HYSTERICAL !!!! Thanks for the guffaw !!!

  • Wynton uses a hi-hat style left foot tapping while Victor prefers a circular motion style also left foot.

  • 2:05 saxo

  • Awesome! What else can you say? *-)

  • Wonderful Victor Goines from New Orleans, Louisiana!

  • Anyone know who the sax player is?

  • Not fair, I'm studying for a degree in Economics and am a sax player but damn I'd love to play sax for a living, not just beer money

  • @RemingtonSAXMAN no you don't. pretty much gotta give up dreams of a house, car, gf, wife, kids, basically anything that requires a STEADY income or health insurance, unless you're lucky enough to land a secure union job or teach at a college/university. but then, that wouldn't be playing for a living, that'd be teaching for a living. earning a living from ONLY performing is VERY difficult to do, unless you're VERY luck and know the right people.

  • hey do any of you guys know what key their playing theyre version of happy birthday in?

  • @Scottslover1 Concert B flat

  • @rb8032 Thanks =)
