  • ps did you go alone? and was it tough to organize? :)

  • @TipTomatoes yup, alone indeed. Not tough to organise, just takes time to organise, plan, get your vaccinations, obtain visas, etc.

  • that's unbelievable, you've inspired me! can't wait to travel :)

  • @TipTomatoes Go for it buddy ! Cheers !

  • a lucky man:D

  • @GreenRoseFTU I couldn't agree more :-)

  • Amazing, i am about to travel the world my self, how much did the whole trip ended up costing you??

  • @henken88 Take a look at some of the comment replies below henken, and you will see my answers regarding your question - it's a question that is often asked ! Have a great trip and record every moment either in photo, video or journal/diary format - you'll be glad of the little things you are reminded of years later. Cheers !

  • @adamskibobs I learned the move in a Body Balance class (google "Les Mills Body Balance" for more info) - my feet are off the ground, and to be honest.... it was a crazy thing to do. The adrenaline was pumping hard though, which was a good feeling lol :-) thanks for favouriting the vid !! :-)

  • @xMelisser92x I hope you have managed to get to Africa by now, if not hope it happens soon. Travel certainly opens the mind. I'm jealous too - haven't done Africa !!! :-)

  • thats an awesome vid. looks very inspiring and i definitely want to travel the world and experience as much as possible. im only 18 at the moment so i cant go out anywhere for long, as i got university coming up. however, after that i'll make sure i have saved up a nice amount of cash for an awesome trip =)

  • @Rock4Star4Dude Cheers Dude, hope it helps to get the message out there - it's a big, wonderful world !

Once you've got Uni completed, worked and saved a bit maybe, then the world is your oyster. Having that degreee will open up opportunities anywhere in the world if you wanna emigrate - go for it !

  • Hey mate, Your pics are fun and amazing! Looks like you had a great time. In fact Im planning to do this itinerary later in the year minus Nepal and Canada. Just some quick questions I wanted to ask you and when you have the time to answer that would be great:

    - What time of year did you travel?

    - What was that perculiar tree place on Cambodia?

    - What rock formations did you climb in Aus? Did u climb Uhuru and how did you find it if u did?

    - What were the rock formations u visited in USA?

  • @sexychilly89 Hey buddy, thanks very much ! Had an unforgettable time.

Nepal was not part of the original plan - I just happened to be in Thailand with a few weeks to spare, and thought "why not - I may never get the chance again" !

I travelled from June to June (1 year).

Angkor Wat is where you will find the amazing tree roots - near Siem Reap.

Lots of walking/trekking in Australia - Flinders Ranges, Grampians, Blue Mountains, Cape Tribulation area, Tasmania, amongst others. And yup,.....

  • @sexychilly89 ....also climbed Uluru - some choose not to, and it is open only if the weather permits - they won't let you go up if it is too windy or hot. People have had nasty experiences up there, so I heard. Climbing it is no problem - a bit steep at the start, but there is a chain-type hand rail to help you.

Hope this helps your plans. Hope you're travelling already !!!!! :-)

  • so what company did you go with? or did you just plan it yourself?

  • @nuttynicky390 Hey Nicky - planned it myself, but went in and sat down with STA Travel (UK) for guidance and help - they booked the flight and one or two other things.

As far as activities, tours, trips, etc. when you are in those countries, it is always cheaper to book in that particular country than booking first back at home - 2 reasons: no middle-man, and plans change so easily when travelling - be free and trust gut instincts - much more fun !

  • @stevemoonuk hi, your travels look incredible, im off to thailand laos cambodia and nam this summer, any tips on places that i cant afford not to see?

    thanks

  • @redd1g Hey there - hope you get this reply whilst you are ON your travels !!! Forgive the delay in replying - I don't sign into YouTube very often, as you can tell.

Thailand - Ko Chang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bangkok, Ko Tao (diving)

Cambodia - the obvious ones: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap itself (ask your hotel if someone can take you for a drive around the town for an afternoon, out into their wonderful countryside - should be around $30)

    Phnom Penh

  • @redd1g ...

Vietnam - Hanoi is an amazing city - you can Halong Bay in a daytrip also from there. Also Hue, Hoi An, the Mekong Delta, Cu Chi Tunnels, Ho Chi Minh City - so many !!!

Laos - spend time there..... it is beautiful, so beautiful. Bus from Hanoi to Vientiane, then head up to Luang Prabang, having fun in Vang Vieng on the way. Then go on a speedboat down the Mekong River back to the Thai border - awesome !!

    Have a great time !!

  • Hi, I was just wondering how much it cost you?

  • @TheLittleWorldofGaz hey buddy - cost a few £ obviously - take a look at some of my other replies, and you will see that I did save for a long time for it. Hope you are enjoying any travel that you can ! :-)

  • Oh the video says it was cambodia :)

  • Looks awesome, already been to a few like what I think was veitnam and Ankor Wat.

  • @TheLordPwnage great to know you have seen Vietnam and Cambodia - absolutely amazing places - I'd go back there anytime ! Cheers !

  • Wow! That was amazing, wish I could go travelling with someone like you.

  • @HenrykStanikowski Cheers Henry - I'm a bit mad sometimes - love the adrenaline rush - ha ha ! Seriously though buddy - there are so many good people out there travelling too - they're all of the same mind-set, you see - i.e. cool explorers/interesting backgrounds, etc. . And the older generation of travellers are definitely worth talking too - the stories they have put me in the shade ! :-)

  • @HenrykStanikowski Cheers Henry, i am a bit mad sometimes - love the adrenaline rush - ha ha !!

Seriously though, there are some cool people to meet when you travel, and the older generation have many more stories to tell than I do !

  • Thanks this video has given me some ideas for my Gap year.

  • @chrisoakburgh Cheers Chris - it was a crazy time - adrenaline seeking was part of the plan ! Hope you have a great gap year !

  • Wow, It looks like you did some pretty amazing stuff out there! I'm thinking about going abroad for a year (maybe volunteer or study, I don't know yet) But how did you plan your gap year? I mean, I'm from the Netherlands and there are so many different organisations, and everything is so expensive, you know. But I would really like to go to Australia or Canada... Do you've got any tips for me?

  • @LauraEvon Thanks Laura - it was fun for sure.

I made a basic plan initially - injections, flights, 2 nights' accommodation in first destination booked, visas, etc. - then once I was on my way, the plan changed month by month. My best tip is to plan ahead, obviously. There's some good books out there with advice - 'work your way around the world' being one of many. Also find travel blogs and follow travellers on Twitter and Facebook for ideas and inspiration. Good luck Laura ! :-)

  • where was your favourite place. im australian..it looks like you had an amazing time is AUS

  • @bellebitty9 Wow - tough question ! The people I met made a big contribution to many of the places, but I think it would have to be Kathmandu and the Himalayas. In the city it was exciting and you never knew what was going to happen next, and seeing Mount Everest was a very personal high. Having said that, every place I visited had some kind of funny/exciting/new experience - it's what you make of it. Getting out there in whichever village or city is important, do things the locals would do :-)

  • Wow, I must say. If you were hoping to inspire, then you certainly went above and beyond in accomplishing that with me atleast. Your trip looks UNBELIEVABLE. Absolutely crazy. I myself have many places I'd like to go, and weeding it down is incredibly hard. But I'm glad you had a wonderful journey in the year that you were gone. I can only hope to experience as much.

  • @JuziJucat Thank you so much ! It was a crazy trip, and still feels like yesterday ! Every place had something special about it.

There is still lots of the USA I'd like to see one day too ! It will happen eventually !

Likewise, I am sure that good journey and adventures will come your way. I agree though - narrowing it down is hard. My advice is to see not pack in too many places in one long trip, better to visit fewer places and spend a bit more time in each to enjoy more ! Happy days :-)

  • You have inspired me so much I got a buzz watching this vid. Im from Wales also :)

  • @Owz600 Diolch Owen ! Us Welsh are a humble friendly bunch of people, but it is good to spread our wings and see the world. When you get the chance, take it ! And take a guitar with you - it always comes in handy to meet or make new friends !

  • WOW! just wondering where would you reccommend the most? im only going for 3 months! :)

  • @Emjay18100 Thanks for your comment - phew, good question ! If it is your first time away (on a long trip) then you can't go wrong with South East Asia - your money will go a lot lot further, and it's nice and hot ! Avoid rainy season ideally though ! 3 months should give you enough time to explore Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. You must visit Laos, it is beautiful and interesting. Check out visas and be careful if you get a visa for Vietnam whilst in Bangkok. :-)

  • I love this, looks amazing, somthing I'd like to do in my gap year. I'm already saving for the big trip, but I was wondering approximatly how much the trip cost? Just to give me an estimate?

    good stuff, thanks :)

  • @rumrasberryjelly Thanks, glad you liked it !

Really is tough to say how much, because it depends on what you do when you are out there - some of the best things you do could be the cheapest, or free ! I was lucky (or unlucky in some respects) in that I couldn't work during my trip (too old for visas in Oz and NZ), but wish I had worked for cash here or there, because 1) I'd make money and 2) I'd have more time in that place i was staying. Best advice is travel by overnight bus! :-) Good luck!

  • @atrain525 Thank you ! Go for it ! It's a big world !

  • I've watched this 10 times!! i cant wait to go travelling!! Great vid Steve

  • @qwertyfire Glad you like it !! Have replied to your email buddy - check your inbox.

    Cheers ! :-)

  • Considering you paid for it Steve, you must be rolling in money!

  • @LabRat6619 Not at all buddy - I'd saved 7 years for a house deposit, but decided to live the dream I'd had instead. The best decision I have ever made in my life.

I now live a very simple life teaching Pilates in my home country Wales, in the UK. Happy days :-)

  • Did you suffer from depression after the gap year was up?

Going back to your 'normal' life.

  • @Snight101 No depression, but the strangest culture shock was coming back to the UK ! After seeing how other countires/people/systems work, it certainly is an eye-opener to return to your home country, and after such an adventure where you are doing/seeing different things every day, to return home and find nothing has changed at all, is very wierd indeed !!

Once you get the travelling bug, you never lose it ! Thanks for your comment ! :-)

  • you are my hero!

  • @d3rc0 thanks for the compliment. I'm just a normal bloke who wants to do extraordinary things with my life. Doing something different, y'know ? That's what life is about, isn't it. Cheers buddy !

  • GREAT VIDEO!

The picture you got by Goldengate Bridge is amazing. I went there but never got a pic as good as that. Also good pic by the hollywood sign!

I am planning to a gap year from Dec 2010 - April 2011, but saving up will be challenging. I'd love to do Australia, and planning to go to Sydney for new years and go to the ashes tets match in sydney

  • @RF120692 Thanks ! Glad you liked the video ! I was lucky with the weather in San Fran that day :o) My advice is to get a working visa for Australia as you are under 30, so you can stay longer and work for a bit if you need to build up a little extra cash. Break up your trip with some extra time in South East Asia on the way our there maybe - your money goes soooo much further there :o) Good luck, and post a video or two when you get there ! Cheers, Steve

  • @RF120692 Hi there ! Thought I had replied to your comment before, but if not, here it is...

Glad you liked the video ! I hired a bike from the city to cycle over to the Golden Gate Bridge - got sunburnt too! Save hard now, stick with it - it will be worth it, trust me. If you are going all that way, you'd hate to then think "aww, shucks - wish I could have done this, or that". However, if money does get tight, and it is near the end of your trip, just do it and pay it back upon your return!

  • awesome

    very good!!

  • @silvanense69 Thanks very much, it was a non-stop adventure ! :o)

  • I used your video in a school work about gap year...

    I'm from Portugal...

My english teacher said that was a very good video.

    I had 17 in that work... (a scale from 0 to 20)

I also talked a little about you and how you did this trip, i read that in a comment you did downstairs.

So, to finish, thank you and I hope I can do a trip like you did!

    :D

  • @silvanense69 Wow, that is fantastic ! Glad it helped, and I am sure that one day your adventures will be amazing too ! Thank you, and best wishes ! :o)

  • I'm hoping to do a gap year next year - I'll be 18 then. One question - how much money did you need to do this? Obviously as a teenager I wont be able to earn enough money before next year to do this, but I'll be working over the summer holidays (I'm Australian) anyway.

  • Good on ya for your enthusiasm to travel - you won't regret it !

How much ? Tough question to answer, let's just say a lot ! I didn't work, but I would recommend a good book out there called 'Work Your Way Around the World'.

I waited 7 years to live my dream, so never give up, it will happen !! :o)

  • First I was thinking Macgyver but then I thought NO it's Magnum PI Brilliant!

Really want to just go passport tickets money phone. And a licence to explore. Love the video

  • Magnum PI is a legend !! :o)

It was a relief once the flight was booked as there was no going back from then on !! Thanks for your comment - glad you loved the vid ! :o) When you do it, let me know ! :o)

  • that was an amazing video, I need to get the Hell out of Dodge for a while... Did you go to Bloody Mary's whilst in Bora Bora?

  • @voodoofish65usf I did reply to this ages ago, but Youtube wouldn't register my reply ! Sorry. Didn't go to Bloody Mary's sadly - I was staying on a motu off the main island (La Paradis - basic but like being Robinson Crusoe!), but did go round Bora Bora on a hired go-kart, great fun ! Scuba diving there was amazing - I'll never forget the MASSIVE Eagle Ray gliding past me !

Glad you liked the video VoodooFish, have a great day ! :-)

  • great video mate, really enjoyed it :D

  • Thanks Zakdx - glad you enjoyed !

  • that's incredible! Im unbelievably impressed! I've just started my gap year and...basicaly im not doing anything as exciting as that!

  • Cheers Broseac !

It's great you've started your gap year - it will change your life !

And I can guarantee that whatever you do, whether you do 20 crazy activities or just one, it'll all be good and no-one... NO-ONE can ever take it away from you.

    Take every opportunity mate.
