A real hero. More than a great ballplayer, he was a very decent guy. All these "hot dog" athletes of today should use him as their example......There will never be another Gehrig.
Great Video Schea. Not only is the quality superb that music fits perfectly. I dont know you sir but It shows allot of class as to how you presented this beautiful video. Your a class act, Thanks.
As a kid, my baseball heroes were Mantle, Dimaggio, Ruth, Cobb, and Gehrig. As an adult, I have read all of their biographies, and it turns out the only true hero was Lou.
This is a YouTube classic, a superb video, capturing the essence of Gehrig, his greatness, his humanity. I never tire of this tribute and will continue to watch in perpetuity.
Look how just going to a game people wore nice clothes and took a little pride in appearance. Now we see a fat slob with no shirt and painted himself blue.
@philandjoelle Show some respect??? When did I show any disrespect? I feel for the man because he was dying yet held on for a false hope of a cure. If you read 'Luckiest Man' you'd realize that. He was a GREAT ballplayer and his legacy lives on everyday in Yankee Stadium. I never go to a Yankee's game without my Gehrig jersey.
@VCR1111 Glad to hear you've got the right thoughts. The last thing a dying person wants is for people to feel sorry for them with "poor you" comments.
Excellent Video!!! Well done!! Lou Gehrig was not only a tough competitor but a true gentleman of the sport. A timeless athlete. He was a class act. RIP
i grew up in the Mantle and Maris years and they were the best in that period but you would have to say that Lou was the greatest ever as a Yankee some will say babe Ruth but to me its LOU
@maverick10241 If you listen to Mick's speech on Mickey Mantle day, he tips his hat to Lou, saying he used to wonder how a man who knew he was gonna die could say he was the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Then Mickey said he now understood how Lou Gehrig felt. Mick wasnt perfect, but he showed a lot of class that day. And recogized it too.
Greatest player not just for his ability but for his stature. He is a true American hero just for being himself and playing his heart out. Every time I watch "Pride of the Yankees" it makes me sad that one of the greatest people to ever live didn't get to live the fullest life that he deserved. He will have to live in our hearts, we owe that to him.
Besides being an incredible ball player he was also an incrredibly hot looking guy (according to my sister) and his personality amplified that. You rarely see any pictures where he isn't smiling. If you can believe it, the house he lived in with his wife in the Bronx and died in still stands and is currently occupied by new people. I live in NYC and saw it up close. Very modest house in a tree lined area.
Quiet dignity of a true superstar! Would have owned almost all the records if he hadn't gotten sick. My favorite player of all time. Thanks for posting this!
I know this pain of loss, and I have lost 3 that were very close to me. My own brother was very painful as it is for so many. My heart goes out to all who have lost love ones from such a painful thing.
Great video. Loved the old footage of Gehrig hitting- he was a strong, powerful man. So sad that he got that awful disease. His baseball stats are incredible- especially RBI's.
Looking at these images, makes you appreciate how they hustled to run the bases. Nowadays there are more slow base runners than ever. Its pathetic to see these lazy, million dollar slow ass base runners. Paul Konerko, Bengie Molina anyone?

i really enjoyed this video of lou gehrig! if there was a ball player i would have loved to see play aside from the babe it would be the ironman lou gehrig!
Lou Gehrig...I grew up worshipping Mickey Mantle--But Lou Gehrig--will be the one player---evern more than ruth--The one player who will be remebered long after Baseball is no longer played or forggetten. Lou gehrig is the most "human" of any sportsman. The level of greatness is really beyond any story....he died young and should have played at least 3 more full seasons.
The numbers would be be equal to or better than any of Ruth or Cobb.
Gehrig was the greatest. Basically only played 13 full seasons, and was already getting sick in '38. Might have had 650-700 homers if he played till 40. WOULD be the all time RBI champ (Had 1990 as it was!). Gate number 4 at the new Yankee Stadium is dedicated to him... they play his speech there continuously on game days. Classy gesture for the classiest Yankee of all.
I am a HUGE, Die Hard Red Sox Fan; can't express how much that I respect and honor the " Iron Horse". I have very few heroes in sports but Gehrig is included along with Ted Williams, Sandy Koufax and Roberto Clemente. R.I.P. #4...
@kirbycol4... i am a yankee fan from birth, but i lived in San Diego for 10 years. Ted Williams is still a god out there and i grew to love him, as much for his Marine service as his baseball. One opening day at the Padres game they gave Ted his full-bird Colonel pin, he got a HUGE ovation.
Unlike the Iron Horse, when Manny retires the only gift he'll get is a one way ticket home. That was a class act ducking out on his teammates mid-game during the NLCS. He is talented but hated--just ask ANY former teammate. If he gets close to Lou's slam record he better wear extra head/body armor every time he goes to the plate with the bases loaded. Baseball has a funny way of "administering justice." Manny will become a Hall of Famer about the same time as fellow juicer Bonds--NEVER
Manny might break his record but Manny also played a lot longer than Lou and also had some help with some artifical drugs. When you are dying of a disease, it's a bit easier to beat someone right? Why don't you compare the same productive years that Manny had with Lou's? Note this, If Manny doesn't break Lou's record with the dodgers, he will NEVER break Lou's record because no one is going to sign him after 40.
Lou goes down as one of the greatest first basemen in history. No one touches him on that regard. Manny won't come close to the status of this guy, even if he does break the grand slam record. How many years did Manny have to do it? And if your angry that a yankee has the record than just deal with it. Manny is no where near what Lou is.
@fiddlenut24 The greatest baseball player who ever lived. No one will ever be lou Gehrig and no one will ever be what Lou Gehrig Could have been! I'm a canadian and I'm a Blue Jay fan but I will always see Lou Gehrig as the Greatest. Thank you Gary Cooper for that wonderful film that gave a great tribute to him.
YES!!!! exactly!!!! and he would've batted a bit higher, if he hadn't taken some at-bats in 1939. As has ALS he went 4 for 28 which is a .143 batiing average i think, not sure
HAHA that was slightly funny......... ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!! Manny!!!! Bonds!!!! WHAT???? First, Gehrig had ALS which is a neurological - degenerative diease NOT cancer. Secondly, Gehrig had outstanding numbers!!!!!!!! remember he only played for only 14 FULL seasons and parts of an additional two seasons!!!!!! NUMBERS: 493 HRS which is an average of 35 per year, 100 plus RBIs per year, not to mention the games played in.
WOW! Ruth handing Gehrig the bat to hit with, the slow motion of Gehrig flipping the bat on ball four, standing talking with DiMaggio and of course the speech. One word describes what I felt- CHILLS. Great ball player; Great person..
Cal Ripken Jr. isn't in the same class as Lou Gehrig :) It takes alot to play the games Gehrig played in and yet produce numbers that he got as you mentioned the hrs rbis and so on :)
@Tampa370. Tough? During an exam they found 17 fractures that had healed over in Gehrig's hands. This is from a first baseman catching throws from infielders! One game during the streak he hit 2 HRs, 2 2Bs, drove in six or seven, and then came out of the game in the fifth inning with a 100-plus degree fever.
@Tampa... re: batting helmets... According to a biography i read Lou was beaned in an exhibition game mid-season. They had to help him off the field. They were worried his streak might be snapped. He not only played the next regular-season game, he hit two or three triples. Lou also came out of spring training one year with a broken finger. Told no one. When they finally figured it out, he said that his power might be down but he would just go for base hits. Tough? Damn tough!
It was a shame that Gehrig was unable to play out his entire career due to ALS, it would've really been something to see where his number might have been. As far as a man, his character and determination, work ethic, and sportsmanship are unquestioned. The only current Yankee who shows any signs of what Gehrig brough to the team is Derek Jeter. Gehrig is and always will be one of the greatest Yankees ever.
yes Lou gehrig is the Iron Horse. He gave his all for the Yankees those 16 magnificent years perhaps we won't be rejocing over 26 world series had this great man not come along and grace us with his glory. Lou Gehrig is the greatest player in the HISTORY of the game hands down.
lou gehrig personified everything that is good and right about america. Work, perseverance, talent, direction, and dedication. selflessness and teamwork--ideals that have been lost over the past twenty years.
Wow, I think that is the best darn video I've seen on YouTube. Lou Gehrig is somebody people can look up to always. Class act, through and through. LET'S GO YANKEES!
Gehrig had to tolerate Babe Ruth's salary-talk circus every year and who's to blame him for wanting a few bucks more. He never made more than half of what Ruth did. And of course, he never missed a game because of it. Read any of the books written about Lou and you won't spend any more time snifflin' and poutin' about his salary negotiations. Get a grip.
Try reading the post I responded to. I didn't say it was WRONG of Gehrig to want more money. He deserved more...MUCH more than he made. I'm talking about the original commenter's claim that players used to not care about money.
I can't believe how many people thumbed down my comment. Christ.
OK I hear you but I guess any form of a negative take on Lou Gehrig easily upsets a lot of us and we reply with our hearts first. I am guilty as charged and so are the thumbs-downers!!! But the overriding perception is that you simply attacked the wrong man here.
i read once that gehrig insisted on spending his bonus' on young up-and-coming players. all the more reason to make him your all-time favorite player. i did a long time ago.
fek2000... true story... after two seasons, Joe DiMaggio held out for around $40000. The Yanks told him that Gehrig, a long time great, made only 39000 or so. DiMag answered back "Mr. Gehrig is badly underpaid!"
In fairness to the Babe, i did read somewhere that Babe tried to help Lou by suggesting they stage a double hold out. Gehrig wouldn't go for it. Ruth knew Gehrig's value, probably better than Gehrig did. i wish Lou had took Babe's advice. After 1927, he would have made a mint!
Lou Gehrig is one of my favorite baseball players of all time. I say one of because there is one who is so much like him, who plays the game with honor, sportsmanship and humility. The reigning NL MVP, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals.
There is a parallel between Gehrig and Pujols, the Yankees and the Cardinals. Gehrig is the best. Pujols is very close. No other team in baseball comes as close to matching the World Series record of the Yankees (26) as do the Cardinals (10).
Even though I'm a Mets fan, I have a lot of respect for Lou Gehrig. Legends (and their achievements) will always live on (in the hearts and memories of any "student of the sport"). Respect and love outlive hatred and rivalry. Such talent rarely comes with humbleness. He hung his head in humility (but not humiliation) even though it was HIS day. Thank you, Lou, for all you've done for the sport of baseball. I'd love to have watched you play but I was born many decades after you've gone.
@bankorama Cant stand the Mets (lifelong Yankee fan) but they once had a guy kind of like Gehrig... Gil Hodges, the manager who led them to their miracle 1969 World Championship. Strong, silent type... former first baseman like Lou, deadly clutch hitter (with Bklyn) and a class act all the way around. He passed shortly after that 69 season from a heart attack. Kinda think the Mets would have done better, longer if he had been able to stick around.
What a fine example of a human being Lou was. He had qualities for which we all should strive. Humility, kindness, consideration, loyalty, character, and a true desire to never take anything for granted. I wish I could have seen him play.
I am from Czech Republic,so i dont know much about baseball and i dont know why you call manny idiot.Today is different time and the old times can't be turn back, but it is very good for any sport, when the legends were not forgotten.
Crying shame. If only all the money, time, and resources spent on that useless war in Iraq was diverted to fighting this disease,it might be a thing of the past.
I commented this video about a year ago. My stepfather is now in his last days because of this disease :(. He got to give his daughter away in marriage a few months ago, and when they walked/wheeled up the aisle, this song was played. I think I was the only one who recognised it from this video. It was a happy moment, but still so damn sad :(
probbarn... i am sorry about your stepdad. Gehrig was my hero growing up. As an adult i watched my wife perform as a caregiver for an elderly victim of ALS. One day the lady asked my wife to put a pillow over here face and smother her. My wife could not, of course. But when the lady passed, both i and my wife cried hard. By the way, Catfish Hunter also came down with ALS... two Yankees, one horrific desease battled by two classy, brave gentlemen... three including your stepfather.
This is a beautiful tribute to a man for all ages. It makes you realize just how low the game has devolved with the unclassy, arrogant, and substance abusing "superstars" of today. Lou Gehrig, now there was a player, and a superb role model for all those that aspire to grace under pressure. To quote Shakespeare: "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world, This was a man!" "When comes such another?"

WOW! Ruth handing Gehrig the bat to hit with, the slow motion of Gehrig flipping the bat on ball four, standing talking with DiMaggio and of course the speech. One word describes what I felt- CHILLS. Great ball player; Great person..
wcn111 2 years ago
Probably one of the most under appreciated parts of his and Ruth's game was their patience. Gehrig walked over 100 times in a season eleven times.
richardtheconquerer 2 years ago 3
Cal Ripken Jr. isn't in the same class as Lou Gehrig :) It takes alot to play the games Gehrig played in and yet produce numbers that he got as you mentioned the hrs rbis and so on :)
tom79978 2 years ago
I don't know if anyone else notied but they didnt use Batting helmets back then, they were tough in the good ole days !!
Tampa370 2 years ago 3
they didnt start to wear batting helmets till the early 60s
CPpunk132 2 years ago
@Tampa370. Tough? During an exam they found 17 fractures that had healed over in Gehrig's hands. This is from a first baseman catching throws from infielders! One game during the streak he hit 2 HRs, 2 2Bs, drove in six or seven, and then came out of the game in the fifth inning with a 100-plus degree fever.
batugan77 1 year ago 3
@Tampa... re: batting helmets... Tough? Damn tough!

R.I.P Lou Gehrig, or the iron horse T.T
GABRO515 2 years ago 3
It was a shame that Gehrig was unable to play out his entire career due to ALS, it would've really been something to see where his number might have been. As far as a man, his character and determination, work ethic, and sportsmanship are unquestioned. The only current Yankee who shows any signs of what Gehrig brough to the team is Derek Jeter. Gehrig is and always will be one of the greatest Yankees ever.
jimw12 2 years ago 4
Not only Yankee, but a complete ballplayer
lamounek 2 years ago 4
yes Lou gehrig is the Iron Horse. He gave his all for the Yankees those 16 magnificent years perhaps we won't be rejocing over 26 world series had this great man not come along and grace us with his glory. Lou Gehrig is the greatest player in the HISTORY of the game hands down.
tom79978 2 years ago
If ALS didn't stop him, he could have played into his early 40's,
possible 700-750HRs,3500-3750 hits and 3000 games played in that streak.
Think about it he had almost 500 homeruns at 35, with his power and average only player close to him today to compare him with is Albert Pujols.

We need more players out there like Mr Gehrig who personfied class and dignity. What a Legend!

lou gehrig personified everything that is good and right about america. Work, perseverance, talent, direction, and dedication. selflessness and teamwork--ideals that have been lost over the past twenty years.

Please with this stuff. Players did the same thing then that they do now. Search "lou gehrig salary' in google archives and you'll see what I mean.

Get a grip.
fek2000 2 years ago 6
Try reading the post I responded to. I didn't say it was WRONG of Gehrig to want more money. He deserved more...MUCH more than he made. I'm talking about the original commenter's claim that players used to not care about money.
I can't believe how many people thumbed down my comment. Christ.
richardtheconquerer 2 years ago
OK I hear you but I guess any form of a negative take on Lou Gehrig easily upsets a lot of us and we reply with our hearts first. I am guilty as charged and so are the thumbs-downers!!! But the overriding perception is that you simply attacked the wrong man here.
fek2000 2 years ago
Understood. Let the record show that I love Lou. Top 5 of all time easy, in my book.
richardtheconquerer 2 years ago 3
i read once that gehrig insisted on spending his bonus' on young up-and-coming players. all the more reason to make him your all-time favorite player. i did a long time ago.
loudog59 2 years ago
fek2000... true story... after two seasons, Joe DiMaggio held out for around $40000.
After 1927, he would have made a mint!
batugan77 1 year ago 2
Lou Gehrig is one of my favorite baseball players of all time. I say one of because there is one who is so much like him, who plays the game with honor, sportsmanship and humility. The reigning NL MVP, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals.
There is a parallel between Gehrig and Pujols, the Yankees and the Cardinals. Gehrig is the best. Pujols is very close. No other team in baseball comes as close to matching the World Series record of the Yankees (26) as do the Cardinals (10).
hcrouchjr 2 years ago 3
Even though I'm a Mets fan, I have a lot of respect for Lou Gehrig. Legends (and their achievements) will always live on (in the hearts and memories of any "student of the sport"). Respect and love outlive hatred and rivalry. Such talent rarely comes with humbleness. He hung his head in humility (but not humiliation) even though it was HIS day. Thank you, Lou, for all you've done for the sport of baseball. I'd love to have watched you play but I was born many decades after you've gone.
bankorama 2 years ago 4

I am not an American or a baseball fan but I think Lou Gehrig is still one of the greatest sports players ever!
His determination, skill and selflessness will always be a timeless credit to the man.
When you balance that against the individuals who now dominate global sports market.
There is sadly competition. Nowadays it's all about money, stats and image.
Gehrig died in '41, but for me his untimely death is still raw.
It's a sad truism that often the good die young.

I commented this video about a year ago. My stepfather is now in his last days because of this disease :(. He got to give his daughter away in marriage a few months ago, and when they walked/wheeled up the aisle, this song was played. I think I was the only one who recognised it from this video. It was a happy moment, but still so damn sad :(
probbarn 2 years ago 4
probbarn... i am sorry about your stepdad.
