If it has failed twice on the market then it is going to be hard to sell it to the masses on the basis it might get canned again. I am sad to be seeing it go too.
They're still working with WebOS and may license it OR do something new with it, AND HP put out an article describibg that that actually installed WebOS on an iPad2, and it ran ***WAY*** FASTER than the TouchPad, the hardware is what was holding WebOS back.
HTC picking up WebOS would be awesome, but I think they have their major market in Android and Windows Phone 7 right now. Seems a bit odd for them to throw a third operating system into their line-up.
No wonder HP Web OS hit the shitter. If your device isn't an Android (FTW) or iPhone (also FTW) then no one would buy it. Because the found out how awesome android and iOS is.
they must have been losing money and couldn't see the web os taking off due to apple there a business and there there to make money that was losing them money so they cut there loses and split a good move hp :D
That HTC idea sounds great, especially now that google has Motorola. HTC can make both android and webos, and to make sure google keeps up their "promise" of continued partnerships with 3rd party phone developers.
WebOS isn't dead. It's just HP decided to discontinue hardware, based on WebOS, that's all. They will probably take Windows 7 route and licence the OS to other manufacturers, resulting in HTC/Samsung/etc WebOS phones.
@PJMAN2952 They're now focusing on enterprise and software, which is where they actually make their real money. Consumer PC's are a really low margin market because the market is just flooded with them. The only thing they have to differentiate them from the competition is price, because everyone else has access to all of the same hardware and they run a commodity OS in Windows, which everyone has access to as well. Enterprise is where the money is, so it makes sense. Just a shame about WebOS.
I am really annoyed wit HP!! I'm an iPhone user, maybe bit of an apple fan boy haha. But I was really looking forward to seeing what else webOS would bring to the table. It's an absolute shame that they are just going to discard it when webOS was really starting to look like it had a bright future ahead of it
@zikalify To be fair, they're doing this for the future of their business. Enterprise is where the real money is. They can sell in massive bulk and they'll get orders for more than just one device. They'll have orders for a whole multitude of hardware and software that ties everything together to make their system work. Big business spend a LOT on IT, and when they upgrade stuff they tend to upgrade more or less the whole lot all in one go. It's a dick move still, but there's reason for it.
@TalesOfWar So they're getting rid of webos devices and there is speculation that they'll stop making PC hardware... my question is... what exactly are they going to sell? Do they have some super popular software that sells so well that it can support the business that I dont know about :-/
@zikalify They sell servers and business PC's, and have a lot of software they ties all this kind of stuff together (they even have their own HP-UX OS which is based on UNIX for their servers). This is where the big bucks are made. They're spinning off or selling their consumer PC division, not PC making as a whole. The consumer PC market isn't very profitable. You have to ship massive volume to make a decent profit, and when you get to the higher quality systems, most buy a Mac anyway.
You're right HP bodged it up. I guess new management doesn't always mean good management. I do share your wish of somebody buying up WebOS and developing it further. Hopefully time will tell if you and I get our wish.
Keep up with the good work and I'll keep following your progress, Dave.
@izuaff04 Totally agreed. He turned the company around, then he left, and bam, they went back to their downward spiral again. I bet he and Larry Elison are laughing maniacally in their Oracle Palace lol.
Hi Dave, sad really, like a lot of people I really thought that the Web OS was going to give Apple's IOS devices a run for their money - but I guess that will not happen shame !!
Hp will stop making device but they are not going to stop supporting webs, from what i read they will be liscencing the rights to webs to people like samsungandhtc.......
Totally agree whit you. It's shame that the best looking os has no future which makes me very sad. I was going to buy a Pre3, but even before they announced that they'll be no longer supporting WebOS I knew it was going to happen. I hope some one buys WebOS and makes it run Android apps. I can't understand why no one wants to develop for web os since its applications are build on html, java and so on. Many web developers could use the opportunity to earn some extra dollars on making apps.
i was extremely sad to here it... i want one, I think it has a lot of potential, but people are sort of brainwashed that anything Apple is only the best, anything Android is better than average but not so good, and anything else is rubbish - this was the reason for HP to loose out. i am extremely upset, I like HP, even though i use a Mac, and I feel sad for HP. I hope HP would think about it again instead of looking at the current sutuation... I really do hope that someone would buy the Palm too
@chakracannon97 HP lost out because the devices were actually crap. The software was great, it needed some work, but it did what you'd expect it to do out of the box. The hardware it ran on was a pile of crap though, that's what killed them, just like all of the WebOS phones Palm made before HP bought them, like the Pre and Pixie. The hardware just sucked and didn't match the quality of the software.
wow, everyones truly sad about palm and webos (john4lakers)
i really didnt expect people to be this sad, but i guess all the promises by HP really got peoples hopes up that the webos could make a dent in the tablet space
people were so excited for the second generation of touchpad and how hp could improve
@HLM190586 Marketing is nothing if the product itself sucks. The hardware was a huge let down, really low quality and really underpowered. News just came out that they tested their OS on the iPad and it ran TWICE as fast, even within a virtual machine inside of Safari. All WebOS devices have been plagued with poor hardware. If they had top quality hardware and had a little longer to polish the experience they'd have sold a boat load. Nowhere near iPad levels, but a respectable number at least.
If it has failed twice on the market then it is going to be hard to sell it to the masses on the basis it might get canned again. I am sad to be seeing it go too.

People always said it has so much potential. The funny thing is HP has done everything to promote the devices by heavy advertising.
The sales shows that people don't really care about WebOS or its devices so there is no potential left for WebOS.
