Think I'll be on the lookout for old display cabinets... thanks for giving me some ideas as I think my degu's are getting bored in their wire cages, brilliant idea
you must really love your degus to give them such a beautiful haven:) its awesome! so if i come back as a degu in my next life, expect to hear some scratching at your door
Anyone who has build a cage like this knowns what I am talking about.
The bedding stays inside the cage, not outside. The levels are so easy to get to and very easy to remove. The bedding can be removed and replaced in only a few minutes and cleaning such a cage is actually fun rather than a burden...it allows you to recreate new setups each time.
Thanks, but their cage grew quite a bit in the past months. Its now quite a bit bigger than it is here. Try watching one of the more recent videos of the cage.
The wheel is 11inches (28 cm in diameter) The cage is big so the wheel looks small. Look at some of my other videos, you will be able to see the wheel more clearly ; )
A degu is a rodent in the Chinchilla family. They behave and are nearly as active as squirels. They needs a big home with lots of room to run and climb. They are very social and cannot live alone. They become very tame and friendly and will mirror the love you give them.
In short, they are among the best pets you can have : )
Is putting a rock in there cage good? My friend says they'll scratch at it, and I'm thinking of finding one. I have two degus, but I need to modify the cage I have, cuz its only a one level guinea pig cage. I made them a hamock...they seem to like it.
With my old cage, I had to clean every 3-4 days. But with this one all I need to do is change the bedding every 2-3 weeks.
The bottom is covered by several inches of bedding and the levels are layered with about 2 inches of bedding. Degus do not pee a lot and do not smell strong, especially if you use bedding. So the cage is very easy to clean compared to a wire mesh cage...and the bedding protects the wood from stains.

Is it hard to clean out?
AnimalLuver356 2 years ago
No, its a lot easier than cleaning a wire/metal cage.
I made a video of the cleaning process.
Look for "cleaning my degu cage"...you will see how simple it is.

It looks like the wheel is too small. It should be atleast 22cm of diameter :)

Watch the featured video on my channel.
It should explain it to you.

Yes, there is no problem with adding rocks or stones in the cage.
I keep rocks in my degu and guinea pig cages.
