It's simple to be profitable poker if you are not greedy OR IMPATIENT. Small, consistent gains = longterm profits.

Example: 6max Limit Holdem, bankrolled for 200PTBB, play opposite to table (usually them=maniacs, therefore you="tight-honest" and trappy post-flop, just let them fire 3 barrels) you eventually are +1 or +2 PTBB. QUIT the session, go do something else.

Repeat that 10 times a day, in 2-3 weeks you have doubled your BR. Repeat until stakes are high enough you can't do it anymore.

Why do you think that casinos and gambling houses have so much money and are so prosperous? Because they have the house edge - they will always win in the long term, given enough time and gamblers.

A very small number of people can win at games of skill (not chance!) like poker on a consistet basis, but they are very few and far between. Most people lose overall.

When you bet or fold can make a psychological difference to your opponents, and bluffing is a key requirement. That takes skill.

Maybe the skill is more mental rather than practical then - the one with the sneakiest brain and the best poker face will be more successful than the man who sweats copiously and raises his eyebrows every time a new hand is dealt.

I also think that skill is involved because there are a very small number of people who genuinely do make a living from online poker. If it was purely a game of chance, then eventually they would all go bust, and some of them have been going for years.

Money from a large number of bad players who lost is gathered in the hands of a much smaller number of good players who win. Most people lose a small amount, shrug their shoulders and move on. A small number of people become obsessive and can't stop gambling.

I still think that there's easily 200 shit players losing $100 a month who are allowing the one ace player to make his $20,000 a month. It might even be a lower proportion than that.

yeah i guess ur right in a way they are small in number but i dont think they are as small as u think. i visit the casino once every fortnight or so, to play poker, and everytime i go i meet at least two or three people who play poker for a living. and a pretty decent living at that. once u know enough about the game and the people who play it, u can get ur money in with amazing odds. its still a gamble, yes, but its like waiting for your odds to improve before u commit any money.

@DrFreeThrow sadly, they DO exist ... an awful lot of people treat it as entertainment, with a potential for being profitable (i.e. semi-pro, even "going pro" one day) -- and the proof is in the graph pudding, often I check opponents on Sharkscope and it's UNBELIEVABLE how rarely they win a match, yet they have played 3000 or more matches, with their graph having a downward slope so steep a skiing freak would be scared.

@simonjeste i played for a long time and checked my opponents on sharkscope to see what i could expect and at a certain point i was desperate to find one that actually had good profit. they say roughly 1 of 100(1%) will make it in the long run, but i saw that most didnt even make it in the short run, btw u should cash 10-15% of the time
