This BAR was a very fast car and I think it was one of the best BAR's ever... The only problem was that this car was completely unreliable... It was fast... Villeneuve was running third in Spain until he got mechanical troubles and he qualified fifth in San Marino... So it wasn't definitely a slow car..
@kukkelf1 It was slow. It was a terrible car. Villeneuve out drove the car and consistently dragged it into the top 10 in qualifying, with his team mate often 10 places behind. Coupled with the fact it was unreliable. I don't think it ever finished a race, I remember many occasion where it was running in the top 6 for Villenuve to retire.
I don't why people never took note of how good a job JV did in that car. He was seriously underrated.
yes this car was quite shitty, but it looks like fun to drive :D (ofc if you have enough skill not to crash it). So much oversteer, understeer and power.
The mistake Jacques was, was listening to his manager telling him Reynard's car payed by BAT money using an average Supertec engine (basically a 1997 Renault) would be a winner soon enough. I mean I remember BAR setting out to win their first ever GP, since Reynard had managed that both in F3000 and CART.
Had he been smart he'd stay at Williams (like Frank wanted him to) and seen if the new BAR team was anything to go for. Instead he picked the big money and drained the team of its resources.
From what I remember being a huge F1 fan as a nine year old, this car just wouldn't respond to anything. This car was shit. A fast lap was possible sure, but in race trim they had a lot of problems. Over the course of a race the car would change characteristics quickly and drastically. And I also remember BAR always being one of the earliest to pit, as it just ate through tyres.
@lordlingcp I agree this car wasn't bad at all. BAR set very unrealistic goals that then gave this car the reputation it has but is definitely showed good pace and its moments in race trim unlike some new teams *cough* HRT Virgin *cough*
Jacques Villeneuve is a legend because no matter how bad or good the car was, or who he was up against, he had no fear, and fought to the very end at all times. Heart on sleeve driver, well deserved world champion. Much like his father in many respects
Jackes villeneuve a great driver and a great sport guy. not like Schumacher, he is a complete son of a bich, I´m glad he is paying for years and year of cheating. Schumacher here is my bondiola for you.
@Elpibedelaverdu The only fault in your statement is that Schumacher is not a "cheater" in the strict sense. People tend to blame him because he was behind the wheel. Ferrari team manager Ross Brawn, the man that tells Micheal what to do is technically the cheater. Also... According to your logic Micheal secretly installed the traction control system in the Ferrari cars. The Ferrari F1 team cheated, Micheal was just the driver, a mere pawn if you will.
Just shows you that when you leave an established Grand Prix team for money, you'll always get the short end of the stick. If Villeneuve would have just stayed with Williams through the dark years (1998-2000), he would have surely won more races in the early 2000's and would have definitely had a longer career in F1.
Como echo de menos estas retransmisiones de F1 de la superseñal de Canal Satélite Digital. Esto si que eran retransmisiones que daban gusto y no las de Lobato
from what i remember the car wasnt all that slow, somewhere in the 8th to 15th kind of range in quali (in Jacques hands anyway) the occasional top 10. it was however terribly unreliable, i remember it being like the 14th race of the season or something before he finished, he was running in the points s few times and retired
I really dont think it was Villeneuve or BAR's fault that JV went nowhere after 97. Ferrari was Schumacher's turf, McLaren had Hakkinen and DC and not many drivers were welcome back at Williams after they left. BAR was pretty much the next best thing on the grid in the early 2000s.
Instead of making engines smaller (V10-V8), why don't they make it to be V12's instead? The cars don't handle that good with greater weight and bigger profile...
Just look at Ferrari in the early/mid 90's, they always struggled with the big and heavy, but obviously powerful V12...
if he stays at williams for a little longer we might see him win another title.. he just made the wrong choice by moving to bar andthat's it after that his career is over..
jacques made a big mistake in joining that new team.he shouldn't have left the williams team.and i heard that,i don't if true or not, that ferrari wanted him to drive for them.but thats what i heard.if it's true/he made a big mistake in not joining them.
the problem with JV was that he always was a loner, a recluse, he didnt work well on developping cars and although a great driver, wasnt brilliant at testing and building a team around him, hence he failed to pull a schuey at BAR and have a winning team around him catering for his every need, as soon as Panis then Button came through to the team he was screwed... and the seasons with Sauber were his way of clinging on to try and rectify the situation he brought on himself, only to be replaced!
Frank Williams wanted to keep him for 1999 and 2000, but Villeneuve listened to his managaer Craig Pollock and chose the big money to drive for BAR instead. Since Reynard built the chassis and they had dominated in F3000 and CART, Villenueve probably thought they were going to dominate F1 too, so he abandoned Williams instead of waiting a year or two to see where this BAR thing was going. Emerson Fittipaldid did the same in 1976 after joining Copersucar from McLaren.
the reason this seems so fast is cos the vid is a fraction sped up, obviously the cars are abit slower in a straight line these days cos of the v8 but 30%? you must be having a laugh, the lap times are faster than in 99, which is when this vid is from.
Janaida you have no idea what you're on about. That lap in the vid from Villeneuve was about a 1:22 or so. Last year, even with the smaller engines, the cars did 1:15s in qualifying. Formula 1 cars are fast because of their ever increasing cornering speeds and braking ability: not straight line speeds.
"NASCRAP", real original. Somebody hand him a trophy, I can't do it 'cause I'm rolling on the floor... because I'm laughing my ass out... and what is sarcasm ?
I get peoples points regarding drivers having no traction control back then, however next year wont be anything like this, as the aero and mechanical grip will be far higher and the clever diffs will make driving incredibly easier out of corners.
jacques is the total f1 master........i dont care what people say .. he totally is, anyone can win in a ferrari mclaren or renault.....just look at massa and now hamilton, i raced hamilton when he was younger, nothing super just average now with the money and the top car oh and more money and just abit more money and just alittle more money you have that result. if you put albers in a ferrari he would be champ, if you put sato in a ferrari he would wipe the floor with anyone,
To be honest, I think you're completely wrong. Hamilton seems fearless and confident and rightly so: he is on equal terms with a double world champion teammate.
If Villeneuve really was "the total F1 master", then where were his results when Alonso was scoring points (last three races, 2004)? He was out-qualified by one-time winner, Olivier Panis in 2001 and 02, not to mention out-performed by one of the current superstars you rate lowly, Massa.
I don't deny that. But there are certainly drivers that not only used their machinery better than him, but also had more talent than him. JV could be seriously quick when he was on it, coupled with his fearlessness and love of speed. Heart-in-mouth moments such as round the outside of Schumi at Estoril and not to mention the fact he was ALWAYS flat through Eau Rouge and 130R.
your an absolute idiot and those comments really do make me laugh...sure you raced against hamilton....ahahaha. no one who races would really have that little understanding of the sport.
Jacques looks like hes fighting it, hes getting bad understeer, especially through that third chicane. Schumacher and Hakkinen don't have to fight their cars as much. Its cool to see them all have to apply some corrections on corner exit due to the lack of traction control.
Jacques is having oversteer. If he had understeer, he would be going wide, then he would need to turn even more the wheel and desaccelerate, but he actually has to turn the wheel to the opposite side.
Jaques takes alot of kerb in and out of the corners which makes the back slide nearly every time and he works the wheel alot more. May be it was the car but I think would do that in any car he drove.
WTF?! Watch Schumi and Hakkinen they both take as much kerb, Schumi even more. JV was still at the height of his powers in 1999 this car was a pig. 0 points all year from a world champ only two years before? Definitely the car.
no it wasnt. remember eurobrun or coloni - no well thts coz the eurobrun broke down in 15 out of the 16 times it attempted to qualify and the coloni broke down 13 times out of 16 attempts both only stayed around for 1 year
but damn the sounds of the cars are fuckin great! jus listen to them at full speed and when they are changing gears, it gives me goosepimples its sound brilliant
no they wanted 1 car with lucky strike and the other with 555 which the fia didnt approve so they had to put both on one side each of the 2 cars as the rule is you have to have the same livery
BAT wanted a 555 car and a Lucky Strike car, but the FIA wouldn't allow it so they merged it to one. Sure, it wasn't a good scheme, but it was striking and unique.

I reckon if he'd stayed with Williams, he would probably have been a title contender in 2001 and certainly in 2003.
Unfortunately though he sold out to the tobacco companies, and really he stayed there far too long, and ultimately that cost him his talent.
He was a fantastic driver; a future F1 star, but eventually he became completely outpaced by his later team mates.
