As far as I know they only use Maya for 3d at VFS. I could be wrong, though. In movie industry Maya scripting is generally used, though Max is more common in video games.

3D program: Maya or 3D Studio max, Maya is more preferred in allot of gaming companies and is fast becoming the dominate program.

Compositing you only have 2 options: After Effects or Shake. Since shake is no longer made, After Effects is your sure thing.

(nuke, Flame, Inferno..ect are the big daddies of compositing) After effects does everything you will need.

He used both Maya Live and Boujou to track the shot.
