@TheGrassyknollkiller Sadly, Conrad Veidt died young. According to IMDB, he suffered a heart attack on April 3, 1943 while he was playing golf with some friends and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 50 years old.

You should check out the movie (search for "The Man Who Laughs 1928" and you should find it here on YouTube). It's a wonderful film and a beautiful love story. And yes, he DOES look like Mistah J, doesn't he? The funny thing is, aside from their looks, they couldn't be more opposite! :) Gwynplaine is a man with a heart of gold and Mistah J is . . . well, you of all people should know what he's like! :) Thanks for commenting!

That's what I love about the internet; I start out following links for Harley Quinn back issues and end up discovering the true origins of The Joker character. Sweet! Will have to check this movie out. Does that make the character in these scenes Harley, I wonder? The adulation seems to be there.

I suppose if you compared them to joker and harley, then yes she would be harley. But in reality, the personalities of the two couples couldn't be any further from eachother. Gwynplaine and Dea have a loving, innocent sort of relationship. Whereas the Joker is...well...The Joker. :)

Conrad Veidt was a fantastic actor (he was also Major Strasser in "Casablanca") so if he was around today, who knows, he could probably be a great Joker. However, the resemblance between the Joker and Gwynplaine (the character Conrad plays in this movie) stops at the smile--Gwynplaine is a man with a heart of gold who is insecure about revealing his feelings to the woman he loves and the Joker is . . . well, he's the Joker. :)

Oh, yeah, I know. There are some scenes where you can definitely see the resemblance, especially when Gwynplaine is in his white clown makeup performing for the crowds.
