T-shirt Trey. Those were good years. I like the collar shirt Trey too before you dorks start spewing your mean on youtube. But I remember these days. If Trey had a cool t-shirt, there was this inevitable feeling of something special or unique happening that night. It's comprable to flannel Trey. LOL.....best band of all time. no contest
While I'm not a huge Phish fan, this is a pretty nice version of this tune. A bit slow and muddy for my taste (almost like an impression of the Dead doing it), but you have to admire them putting their own stamp on it. That's what doing a cover is all about. Who wants to hear a note for note remake? (Except maybe Michael Bolton fans)
@jds122567 yup, too slow & muddy for me too but pretty good vocals ...just rehearsing an acoustic version, for performing live tomorrow, and can't find a key where I can do it justice! 'course you can't beat robert palmer's version
@jds122567 this is definitely one of the tunes you need to hear Mike clearly to know what it's really like imo. His bassline is not picked up on Youtube.
To make a point to bash Phish only prooves how good they are. If they weren't awesome and completely relevant nobody would waste their time bashing them. Hate is the sincerest form of flattery folks. See you this Phall......I would kill a hater for a funky good time with Boogie or Sally or both!
the lee dorsey version is completely different than the robert palmer version so i can't see how anyone could effectively argue for one over the other. joe cocker did the same thing with beatles songs. is anyone really going to say that he did it better than the fucking beatles? no, but they're allowed to like it better. and for anyone saying phish is trying to outdo robert palmer, you obviously don't know phish and their catalog of covers. they hardly ever try to make them their own.
@UglyToontown I think Phish does put their own style into their covers that clearly separate them from the original but with good taste. Frankenstein/ Peaches might be the only ones I can think of that are almost note for note...then again they are instrumentals. Loving Cup, Boogie On, WMGGW, all have a Phish vibe to them that is different than the original. None the less it's all good...even the Palmer version, which I like because you once in a great while hear it on the radio.
@mattjm82 yes of course i agree with the fact that they put their vibe on the covers they do, i'm just saying if you listen to the pre-jam parts of most of their covers, it's pretty much part for part in the same key/tempo/phrasing..etc. GTBT, Old Home Place, ADITL, Rock and Roll, etc. they do have a phish spin, but not as much as say Cities, Roses Are Free, and 2001.
@AGOPIMOU1 robert palmer is a creampuff bitch if his version is your favorite then your a faggot lee dorsey by far has the best version even phish does it better
well MY opinion is that anyone with the opinion of robert palmer being good is a retarded jew . all of you need to recognize lee dorsey and phish are way maynier. palmers a pussy bitch
well opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. Oh and btw, I am not a jew and if I were jewish, I certainly wouldn't care what you thought! jUST SAYIN
clearly a tight outfit, but this is way too slow! not keen. prefer the original by Toussaint...or was it Dorsey...can never remember.....loved Palmers too with Lowell on guitar. just my humble opinion i suppose....
Well, i did say "in my opinion". The recent tour has shown all four of them on top of their game, especially the way they sync together on jams. I would suggest you go back and listen to Sneakin and the Gorge Jam with an open mind.
I agree with your humble opinion. Toussaint is brilliant, and Palmer rocked this great song. So does Phish, during other, more upbeat performances on live recordings I've heard.
Your right. These type of electric transitions arewhat I miss most. This version reminds me of hanging out with my olds friends smoking pot and listening to an array of phish boot leg tapes
huh? oh yeah, pot. i almost forgot. in my day, i think i dropped more between the sofa than most dudes smoked in their long and illustrious careers as full-time bona-fide potheads.
goodness that was a slick segue. why don't they do it like that anymore?

I'd never ever want to be so stoned, or have such bad musical taste that I thought this was actually good. Phish totally trash this song!

@bejaconow actually he didnt 'do it first' he wrote it for Robert Palmer for the title album sso technically Robert did it first.
