well is mahavishnu in the grasp of hindu demons or is his creativity from a good triune god we call Jesus. if it's demon worship ultimately, he has brought a bad reference to music theory.
fine music but the best concert jazzrock trio was SBB, try for example concert from Karlstad 1975, may be the best record in this style in XX century or concert from Helsinki with Niemen as Niemen group from 1973 possible on youtube
@szelenberg Really? You must be high or something. SBB is not even close to the MO. Well maybe one of SBB's guitarist's use of a Gibson double neck...
@dorian411 Dorian! I saw many concerts of SBB, it was great, magic music(in 70th). I hope You will like it. I know Mahavishnu, but in my opinion some records of SBB are more attractive and I prefer their music. Best wishes!
Guitarist Carl Orr: "I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Follow Your Heart - John McLaughlin song by song.” The descriptions of the music are great, and I particularly enjoy those inspired moments when the author abandons literal description and describes the music in vivid, sometimes surreal imagery."
has anyone heard 'one word' from the second tony williams lifetime album(turn it over)? same melody!(with jack bruce singing!...and same unison head as 'one word' from birds of fire!) long live john mclaughlin
Yes, I've heard it and it's way cool. Has anyone heard Escalator over the Hill (1971) by Carla Blay/Paul Haines. It's a double album rock/jazz musical/opera w/Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Don Cherry, Linda Ronstadt, Charlie Haden and many other amazing musicians, and Viva! (from Andy Warhol's world) Nothing like it!
Clearly! Rick Laird is shown here playing the transparent Dan Armstrong (lucite) bodied bass. After playing w/the MO, he retired his bass playing and became a professional photographer.
I think it's all on youtube. 'hope' which I never posted but someone else has. 'One word' and 'resolution'. It was for a tv concert and I think that's the whole thing.
The best music today is hidden on the internet or on the fw great public supported radio stations. Still I say there's nothing like the first time. And the sounds coming out of that era didn't exost just a few years earlier. The good music today is reminiscent. I'm so blessed to have been a teen in the early 70's. It was a very special time. Musicians were allowed to experiment and we expected that. Nothing like today! Generic (the Matrix) is the norm now.
rete, Not sure I agree. There are many obscure great musicians making great music now but not most of the ones you mentioned. Nevertheless none reached the level of the groups in the early to mid 70's. Growing up then, this music was NEW. That's what made it even more special above and beyonds the creativity and technical ability. There's very little that you can say is NEW these days. Zappa, YES, Maha, RTF, Gentle Giant, etc were making such uniquely original & individualistic works of art
There are plenty of new and interesting musicians out there, you just need to look harder. And to say that no band could ever live up to the music of the 70's.. You have an attachment to the bands you grew up with because while they were not only doing new things, they were a part of a very special time in your life, just like many teenagers today are going through the same thing. There are many scenes full of interesting and fresh msuicians who continue to experiment with sound.
Yes I can't totally disagree. I always searching for that extremely skillful and creative band in very unusual places. Over the years I found a few but still say overall it was a very original different era than than what young listeners are going through today. I think that most from recent generations are unaware or accustomed to creative and unique music as before. I grew up appreciating Fellini in film and Miles in music, etc. Many today have less attention span overall to abstraction n arts
I will agree with you there. I think the 80's and 90's brought out a lot of garbage, and that kids now just don't appreciate real art in general as much as they used to. There is definitely a lot of psuedo everything nowadays... but there has been a steady influx of cool music within the past few years. Try searching "Tera Melos" or "Maps and Atlases". That's only 2 bands, but it's a start, and if you don't like them, then hopefully, at the very least, it will open you up to some other bands.
Thanks TCAWhAt for the tip. Listened to several tracks of both at imeem"dot'com. Really happy to know and have them in my playlist. They are definately interesting.
Very progressive agressive guys who like having fun being talented. Peace
I can totally disagree with you as well. I didn't grow up on any of this stuff. I was a twinkle when these guys got together and wee when they broke up. The prog/fusion era in the 70's is one of those rare anomolies like the Baroque period or living in Germany during the lives of Mozart and Beethoven. It will continue to go unlauded for several decades more until the popular market picks up on it again.
i was fortunate to see the final Mahavishnu concert at Avery Fisher Hall in NY. This was their final encore and I remember Billy Cobham could barely sit up!!! amazing!!!!
For all fans of the MO there is a 2006 recording of the HR-Bigband, featuring BILLY COBHAM: "Meeting of the Spirits" - A celebration of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Top sound quality, first class musicians. Even John himself is thrilled to hear his own music transcribed for jazz orchestra!
Have you ever noticed how critical amateurs are of great art? BTW, I think the bass is a little sharp.... Mac is in tune with the keys and violin.....but who cares, it was way before digital tuners, and just one night in a long tour of gigs. I so miss this music, I wish the jazz record business would wipe off the mold, and let it happen again!
if these amateurs like you say ever played in a large hall with lots of people and hot stage lights, they will know that guitars go really out of tune once the wood expands.
and you can't just stop to retune, and those old gibsons are notorious for not staying in tune.
but you're right. the less they know the more unconstructive comment they make... empty vessels make the most noise. LOL
You're right. Those amateurs in fact belong to the Britney Spears generation, with all those ****ing songs and heavy produced "art". They'll never know what was really up 30 years ago...
Well i was born in 1985 and i grew up with music like this and i dig your feelings
but there`s still a lot of people today that make great honest music you just have to find it, if your out of the scene and only believe what the hype and media tells you the situation truly seems desperate
but our generation has its diamonds as well
e.g. the mars volta, jose gonzalez, ani difranco, radiohead, björk, the white stripes... and a lot of virtuosity today is in electronics like autechre for example
It's a shame that westeners would rather give a "good show" than play in tune. In real Indian music you do stop to tune. It's funny how you say they can't....
OK - The Beatles Orchestra. The Who Orchestra. Led Zeppelin Orchestra. Van Halen Orchestra. Frank Zappa and The Mothers Orchestra. Neil Young with Crazy Horse Orchestra.
