You can use one of the other corn husks to help press out the masa to get it more even. Mine never sticks, and I've been doing it that way ever since.
This is so great! Thank you. I'm happy to find out that I can use coconut oil. I can't eat the lard or shortening. Wonderful! I can't wait to get started.
Wtf???? She made dry tamales and no salsa verde or red I mean what that fruck??? These are not Mexican tamales and they are not even puertorican tamales....
@jandee74 not everyone likes salsa with theirs, my boyfriend is from mexico and he eats his plain as do I and I grew up next to the border. it all depends
I made them!!!!! Yay!! (and the crowd goes wild!!) Not only were they so EZ but ohmgosh are they yummy! I served them with your Daddy's Chili and it jest don't get no better than that! I do have a couple complaints though .... we all got too full. ((grin))
@meggiemeg86 Masa harina is the dry, cornmeal-like flour you make masa out of. Masa is the dough after the masa harina has been mixed with water or something else.
So many are bitching about (not from scratch) So many Mexican super markets sell masa pre made and even the filling.. Its much better than buying them in a parking lot like how some sell and buy them in So Cal.. This was just a quick and easy way to make them.. With out hours.
Also I prefer quality control over quantity... Making a little at a time is good. Rather than making hundreds and having some dry and some big and some small. Where it won't cook evenly..
I keep subscribing and every time I watch one of your vids it tells me Im not,am I getting drunk and leaving BOOBIES messages or something ;-) Its possible hahahahaha
When you open ur tamales there not supose to lo like that j/s there supose to be perfectly shaped like it was placed, urs came out all messed up and broken..but good try,i guess
No offense, but she made them small and just got them out of the pot. But they did not really fall apart.. A part of masa on the side is common with some tamales.
Also Her tamales do not look dry, they look moist.. She is also not making hundreds of them. She just made a few.. A few small ones.
Not nice try, more like good job...
So many show how to make 50-100 tamales.
Which can intimidating she made it clear and simple.. With just a few
@Philipe0849 No offence tooken, your entitled to your opinion,as i am to mine..and fyi no one said there dry..so go pick that bone with whom ever said they were ..Im glad you think she did a good job as im sure she's glad as well, but i stick to my opinion.. Thx for your opinion,no offence was taken..have a good day :)
@Cyndyn3 If by "scratch" you mean grinding your own corn on a metate, then sure, she isnt doing that, but then again most people don't. That being said, everyone knows the best tamales are made using lard. No question.
My mom showed me how to make tamales a few yrs ago. chile and all. this year will be my 5th time making them. Ive been looking on youtube for some more tips. lol your the only one that rolls the tamales together like I do. theyre seemless that way. not even my mom and my whole family know to do that. or even the full on pisa lady or anyone on youtube know to do that. got a few good tips but yours is most interesting. I really like the coconut shortening suggestion. im gonna try it.

Thank you so much i always thought tamales were really hard to make but your cooking instructions really helped me out and thank you for the fillings also thank you very much.
Hey Hilah, your spanish is very good. those tamales look so good, look into making some colombian pasteles, theyre similar to tamales and are insanely delicious.
@hilahcooking you guessed it, theyre wrapped in banana leaves and boiled i believe. the filling is different from region to region but its all based on personal taste. thanks for replying.
Your spanish is great. actual masa uses pork lard instead of coconut oil. I find making tamales a very tedious job, so i make the tamale masa into tortillas.
@decoysupreme Thanks! Yeah, I wanted to play around with a vegan version and really liked the slight coconut flavor. Nothing like some good old lardy masa, though! :)
Instead of bowling the Corn Husk you can just Soak them in water.....&& you can buy the Masa premaid so you dont have to make it your self(: just wanted you to know ha(: i love your videos Btw
As many zillions of these as I've eaten in my life, I've never watched them being made, never knew how, obviously never tried it. You scored again, Hilah! I'll definitely be making these. Prob'ly next week, though, after I've digested the roast beast.
Merry Christmas!
PS - I think 24 eggnogs in 24 minutes might be excessive, but in 24 hours? It's absolute deprivation!
Another great video, Hiliah, but I cringed every time I heard you say "tamale". The singular form of "tamales" is "tamal". Also, I know you know how to properly pronounce "tamales" because of how you read the Spanish version of the label for the masa. Please respect the Spanish language even when speaking in English, and then I would love you even more LOL! Thanks for such an informative post.
@1kperday Yes, I did know that. Also, I did not disrespect Hilah. I thoroughly enjoy her shows, and I think she knows that. I was just being informative, and I was writing to her, not to you.
Thanks for taking the FEAR out of making these - they are such a traditional Christmas/New Year thing to make. Hell, girl, they sell for $12 a dozen! So you made them for like 50 cents - that was a wake up.
Happiest Christmas to you, your family and your non-thieving, cooking-receiving neighbors. Love ya in Oklahoma!

@alesbica Well i respect spanish language however. it would be better to know the point of this video instead of just the pronunciation..
because it kinda sucks to ruin the comments with " its how you pronounce this, that." maybe saying something like
" nice video,Tamales should be made like this or that" would be better.=)
i know its difficult to just relax and listen to people pronouncing your 1st,2nd language wrongly. however, just get over it.
