  • 2:21: Francis Ford Coppola on flute.

  • Very nice. I would have love to have seen Bernstein when he conducted the premiere. Chailly is fun to watch, too, of course.

  • Great!!!!

    But too slowly the 6/8

  • this just evokes so much of every emotion

i must find a copy of it

  • :( there are empty seats in that audience. the house should be packed!

  • not bad, but i agree with some of you that the beginning was a bit too fast. the ondes receives its due attention in this video. I like the myung-whun chung version with the orchestre de l'opera bastille. thanks for posting this up!

  • wow I love that theme

  • Certain parts of this musical piece reminds me of background score of Rambo: first blood movie.

  • You know, I wouldn't be surprised if Jerry Goldsmith, who did the score for First Blood, was influenced by Messiaen, or more specifically, this piece. He was a great film composer.

  • Yes, we'll never know that but it's quite believable!

  • very original and colossal work by french composer Olivier Messiaen, in which it's presented all chacateristics of his music at its maximun: a deep catholic faith, fascination for hinduism, attention to the instrumental color and rhythm and above all the birds singing as well as the use of the original ondas martenot

  • 7:10-7:20 is my favorite part

  • What's that eerie, cosmic instrument?

  • the Ondes Martenot.

  • see also: radiohead's "how to disappear completely"

  • they could have added some volume to the string section...ive heard other versions of this....the strings are just buried in this version.....but otherwise a good rendition of a difficult piece..

  • (y)

    Musica para gente enferma

    genial!!

    la ame! xD

  • Ozzy's performance of this is my favorite.

  • Vaya grima!

  • Thanks for uploading this beautiful yet underrecognized piece of art.

  • Beautiful! I don't know how people don't "get" this piece. It's one of my favorites. The best performance, in my opinion, is Ozawa's with (I believe; I'm not certain) the LA Philharmonic. It's rather old, so the audio feed maxes out at some of the louder percussion segments, but the interpretation is wonderful, and the ondes martenot isn't overamplified (like in the Aimard/Davis/et al version also available on YouTube). I like this performance very much, too, though. Thanks for posting!

  • ... quando ancora la televisione italiana (statale e privata) davano un certo spazio alla cultura, ormai scomparsa da tutti i palinsesti!

    Grande Messiaen... e Chailly!

  • The rhythmic movement at 6:34 sounds like a joke. So funny.

  • The rest is OK, bit the beginning is way too fast. Chailly leaves no time to listen for the sustained chords. It's the contrast between the fast attacks and the long sustained chords that's important.

  • I on the other part think that this whole symphony is supposed to be faster. It's a symphony about Power and Love after all. I certainly do prefer the recording made by Hans Rosbaud.

  • I really don't like this interpretation of Messiaen, and the way Chailly conducts this wonderful music. It's hard to really see the colors because the interpretation is really nervous. I prefer by far Rattle with the Birmingham's orchestra...

(sorry my english is very poor)

  • Do you really expirence synesthesia? That's so cool. Unless you mean orchestral colors...

  • Pretty good performance. The trumpets are a bit rough and I don't like his conducting face :). My favourite recording is nagano with the Berlin Phil. Check it out.

  • wow wow wow, i want this whole performance on DVD -- RIGHT NOW... i love the presence of the Ondes Martinot, right up in your face, so prominent, makes sense of so much woodwind and string writings...

  • Exactly.,. )I want it too! Chailly is so cool. He also recorded some fabulous recordings of Varèse's works.

  • He did record it with The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam.
