@TheMartikaa just wanna ask.... i know that this is a slavic language and i understood nearly everything (cause i know 2 slavic languages: Russian and Ukrainian) ... what you've typed sounds a little bit like Ukrainian (with latin letters)... but which language is that?
Pozdrav! :)
thank you so much! i've been struggling with my desire to learn languages for a learn time.
may i just ask one question? do you think that it is more difficult if you are trying to learn more than one language at once. More specifically, do you think you should get to a certain level of proficiency before you attempt to move onto other languages?
My main problem is listening and comprehension so I find it hard to find resources for that!
@morpheus2902 Learning multiple languages at the same time does cut the amount of time down that you can dedicate to learning grammatical structures and vocabulary. It can also create problems with language crossover and interference. However, some people manage it quite well and has no or few problems at all. I say, go with what feels right and a system that allows you to make the progress you feel happy with. :) The most important thing is regular study. :)
Your efforts to advance ALL human culture through language and communication are truly commendable. You've inspired me to put more of my own effort in to learn to better communicate with and understand my fellow man.
@MsGazette1 My first Slavic language was Czech and that was a tough one to get into, I have to say. It did help to start speaking other Slavic languages more quickly than I would have otherwise done without it. Georgian is also a killer to learn! :D I am read and write in the languages I have studied well. :)
Richard, just letting you know that I admire your work and your achievements in the field of language study. Knowing 16 languages is absolutely fascinating. Out of curiosity, have you ever considered learning a language that is no longer alive (i.e. Latin, Prussian or other)? Also, do you ever get a feeling that your losing your ability to speak one language or another? If you do, how do you deal with it? Thank you very much for your answers.
@madsaras There is definitely a need to keep up languages in order to maintain one's level. It is not something you can learn and then just shelve and not use and expect it to be there forever. Of course we can usually retain a lot of things, but the fluency in talking to a native will go "rusty". I try to use as many of my languages as possible to keep them up. I have studied some Old Icelandic at university and I love the sound of Latin, though I am more for modern languages really! :)
this video was very informative. Thanks! It really helped because I want to keep learning more about languages. It's a wonderful privilage to get to know these languages.
Gracias por este video. I would like to learn several languages myself. Gracias otra vez! Ciao
@Israel9068 How confident are you with Swedish? What level are you at now with your studies? Listening to the pronunciation of the language is very important with Swedish. We took one whole academic year just to work on that at university! :)
Waahh, thanks man! I've been wanting to learn Korean but wasn't so sure since I have no one to help me out where I live.... But I think I'm going to check out those websites! =]
Hello, I am really amazed by seeing your videos and would like to have any advice from your side for my little baby boy who's 3 months old and everyone thinks he will be confused with the languages, his father speaks urdu and english, I do speak spanish plus also handle portuguese, italian and some french, Beside all this we are moving to an arab country. How would be the best way to handle all of them? Thanks in advance for your reply.
@gloriale2001 Thanks for your kind words. I am trying to understand which languages you are using actively with your child. Could you just run through that again with me please? Multiple languages are not a problem for kids from day one. I am bringing up a multilingual child myself. Also it is the norm in the world as a whole to have more than one language. The key to ensure you have a good balance and a positive environment. Feel free to PM me. :)
@MvG040 There are some courses out there for Romanian, which can help you get into the language. Assimil Romanian is a nice course for example. It is very much horses for courses, but I would recommend regular study as the top priority with whichever course you decide to use.
Hi im 14 years old and i live here in The United states so far i can speak fairly well in spanish because of school but i really want to learn french i have always had a weird attraction to the language and i want some tips from where to start for now i dont care about where i get later but first i want to learn the Verbs and Vocabulary for it so i can say things like "how was your day" "dog" "cat" "good morning" "chair" "spoon" "table"
@Torbyrne any tips for learning Finnish? Note: I speak Swedish fluently, which is very useful because of all the Swedish lånord in Finnish. Dutch is my mothertongue.
@VliegendeNederlander I have not learnt Finnish to any great degree to be able to offer sincere and honest advice specific to the language. However, one thing that holds true for any language you are learning...regular study is key, even if just 15 minutes a day and going over old material or listening practice. Keeping it in your mind is the most important thing to remember. Your goal should be to breathe life into the language, so you can use it. :)
Hello Richard! How did you manage the verbal aspect learning slavic languages? I'm learning Russian at th moment and these verbal pairs are quite puzzling! Do you have any advice?
@icebeef The verbal aspect takes time to get used to and it is tough to get right 100% time as natives don't always hear a mistake. Instead they hear a different meaning to the one you wanted to get across. Practice is the best thing for this. The concept of imperfect and perfect tenses, which you may have been used to in the Romance languages can help if you think of it as a basic idea to help bridge the mental gap in the first instance though. :)
hey thanks for the help!I just started learning German on my own and it looks a bit intimidating with a few hard words to say though its a lot of fun! is it just me or is learning a language at school boring haha and learning on your own is much more fun?:D
Thank you for your reply. I know Lithuanian is Indo-European, I can actually speak it. :-) Hungarian and Russian are my "father" and mother tongues. One of my friends who is half-Macedonian says your Macedonian is impressive. Keep it up! Best regards,
Good on you - great video. I've had a good go at three languages and a modest go at another three, loved all of them. Your video has got such a wealth of useful resources, and a good attitude. A learner can probably make a huge difference to their success if they follow your advice. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.
@PalmyBruce Thank you for writing such a kind and encouraging comment to me. It is always nice to receive such lovely feedback on my videos. it makes my work worthwhile to hear people find what I am putting on my channel a benefit to other language learners. :)
@EsteticUrban Russian has quite heavy grammar points. If you want to get the grammar right, then you will need to commit to memory the declinations for the cases. A good way of doing this is looking at the tables and doing exercises. When you feel you have mastered the basics, then move onto realia (magazines, books etc.) and look for the patterns in the language. The perfective and imperfective verbs are another thing to focus on in Slavic languages as getting them wrong changes meaning. :)
@Torbyrne Hej, Richard, Jag heter israel. Can you give me some tips in learning swedish. It has been now two months since I started learning the language.

kala, symfono, ellinika sou leipei, pero los demas idiomas los hablas molto bene devo dire, e anche la pronuncia, i am really impressed, that is quite uzasny, dokonce i cesky a mas dobrou vyslovnost, je videt ze jsi se ucil od cechu a ze jsi hodne mluvil, teraz si nepametam , hovoris aj po slovensky? mne nravitsa kak ty gavaris po serbsky; bahot accha hai!
Wow. Thank you very much for sharing. I speak Korean and English fluently and thought.. why not more.. and I am so addicted in learning Spanish. I heard there is a man who can speak 60 languages in Brazil. Pfft.. I am going for 61
Richard, why do you break the video up into 4 second segments? I mean, you speak German non-stop for 5 minutes, but chop English into annoying bite-size bits?
@tromboneJTS I like to play with the formatting of my videos. I saw this technique used on other YouTube videos and it appealed to me. It is not going to be to everyone's taste, I know. My goal was to give the most and best information I can in the shortest time. :)
Regarding the German video being done in one take, well some people will always want to assess my level of the language so one take is pretty important to them, I take it no one doubts my ability in English. ;)
@tromboneJTS German is a language where longer sentences are more permissible than in English. I'm a native speaker and I often write terribly long sentences in English, because I'm used to German Syntax structure
Thank you so much for posting your videos, you inspire me to become a polyglot before I reach 30, thank you again, and please keep up your amazing skills!!
@badermuteb The important thing in starting a new language is to make sure you are psyched up for it. Make sure it is a language you want to study. Be sure of your reasons. Personally I need to see a use for it in my life as well as like the sound and feel of it when it's spoken and or written. Then you need to do regular study (every day if possible, even if for just 10/15 minutes). Regular study is the key (even if you miss a day or so). Just remember, it is not a race - it takes time. :)
Just curious: is there a European language that you don't understand at all when you hear it being spoken? What about Hungarian, Lithuanian, Finnish? (Because these are unrelated to any of the 16 languages you speak)
@akoltay There are a number of languages I can understand because of my previous language study. The common vocabulary shared by many languages (Indo-European in particular) is a big help to me. That said, I cannot understand Hungarian, Lithuanian or Finnish to any great degree. Lithuanian is related to the languages I speak however, as it is an Indo-European language. :)
Awsome!!! I Love Languages too I live in Mexico but i love the scandinavian languages i wanna learn them all, now im learning finnish by myself if there are any finnish person reading this please get in touch with me =D
have you got any ideas where there are tapes or recordings that can be listened to with questions to test you on listening ability? (That would be useful for low ability e.g. GCSE) Thanks.
@nun3at0nlad There are certainly things on the Internet, the BBC offers various things on their languages pages, linked to from the main BBC website. I remember seeing these types of things for GCSE in the revision books for the exams. Any good bookshop should have some of these available for sale to test all areas of the language for the GCSE exam. :)
Salut, Richard!
Great video!!! Thank you for all the suggestions....I'll check the channels you suggest, and of course..subscribe to yours :) if you need help with Italian, here I am :) greetings!!!
can you speak Polish? I'm interested because I've read that Polish is one of the hardest languages in the world (for example: 17 grammatical forms for the number 2). What's more, I've never seen a native english speaker who speak Polish fluently.
@matigno1988 I do speak some Polish. It is in the same sub-group of Slavic languages as Czech, which I speak well. It is therefore quite easy for me to understand it. I also have Polish friends, so I am exposed to the language quite often. You are right in saying that the grammar is quite difficult to master for a native English speaker.
@Torbyrne Take umim mluvit dobre cesky ale studovat polstinu neni zadna sranda. Vyslovnost polstiny je velmi slozita a trva nejakou dobu.
Polaci maji velmi dobre ucebnice polstiny pro cizince.
To je mnohem slozitejsi.
hello torbyrne-i have a few questions, what employment opportunities are there for polyglots? and if u know how much can a polyglot make? i'm a lost college student ( i havnt decided on a major) and im interested in learning foreign languages, what classes should i take? any help would be appreciated, thanx
@arivas713 I am not sure about polyglots per se, but many languages can be used in combination with other skills. The salary would vary depending on what those other skills are. As most polyglots, I did not intend on becoming one to advance my career. It is simply a love of languages and becoming a polyglot is a side effect I suppose. :)
@Raperboy228 I do speak some Greek, yes. I love the language too. It really is quite beautiful and a wonderful language to study because of its rich heritage.
Man you Rock! I am Spanish and I am spending a year abroad in Amsterdam. My English level has really improved but I am afraid of losing it when I come back to Spain because there I have little opportunity to speak it. What's about you? you speak 16 languages but I guess you do not practice all of them daily, have you noticed a decrease in any language level due to not practicing it? Could you give me any tips? Excuse me if I did any mistakes.
@Juarmis I can recommend some tips Luca outlines in his latest video /user/poliglotta80 for doing this. In addition, SharedTalk by Rosetta Stone is a great site to practice languages. You may also find willing Skype partners on the various forums too. In addition to that, I say trying to listen to as much as possible (TV, radio, natives or other learners).
@voodoochills Moses is definitely NOT a fake. Why would someone post over 600 videos about languages, make facebook statuses in different languages, and buy endless amounts of learning materials just for the hell of it? Get your head out of the shitter, sir.
Rofl, so by making hundreds of videos on youtube that means you´re fluent and can speak in all these languages? When have you ever once seen him or heard him converse face to face with someone else in their native language. Until I actually see him somewhere else face to face having a conversation with someone in their native language, he´s full of shit and a fake. Theres no way he could hold a convo in half of the languages he claims to know.
Yeah, I can buy 25 Swahili or Latvian dictionaries too, 1. doesn´t mean I´ll be able to speak it, or that I can, and 2. Doesn´t matter how many books you have or own if you can hardly speak! I bid you good day, sir
Dude. You are my hero. I am 17-year-old language enthusiast. I as well have been learning them since I was very little, maybe 6 years old. It started out with a French computer game my dad bought me and the rest is history. Right now I ca speak Swedish and French, and I'm working on Brazilian Portuguese. Just thought I'd let you know that what you're doing is awesome. Learning a language is more than just grammar and vocab. It's learning a new way of thinking and a new culture. Keep it up.
It's amazing the number of languages you can speak! I also love learning new languages, but I must admit it's not easy. So far, I've studied 4 foreign languages. English for 10 years, I love it, I'm very fluent now. French for 6 years but never liked it, so eventually I stopped. German for 4 years, also love the language but I'm still not very fluent at it. Recently I started learning Russian, it's hard and I'm not doing very well. I'll try to follow your advices, thanks a lot for sharing them!
Keep it up.
i am from romania, i was born there but i was adopted and i speak english and spanish now but i want to go back to my home and im trying to help teach myself romanian, do you know any good books or sites for romanian?-Cristiana
I found some good teaching material on the internet. Google "Ferd'nand".
These are wordless cartoons. I have the students describe the situation trying to use all the important structures. Then I have the students role play the situation.
I've had a lot of success with this. It's the fastest way I've seen to give them a good command of important structures.
This is good material for language exchanges too. It's good for any language.
I have Rosetta Stone for German, and it is pretty good. But I definitely wouldn't use it as my only resource. Its pretty long though, Ive been on it for a few days and Im still on level 1 unit 1 out of 3 unites and theres 2 other levels...but definitely check out some of the websites he mentioned
@dscottn101 I have never used Rosetta Stone exclusively, so I cannot give a complete appraisal of it. I can say that product gives plenty of listening practice. The voice recognition and correction was a little buggy for me when I tried it in Mandarin. It didn't always pick up on mistake in tones. It builds up language knowledge slowly through repetition. Repetition is key to language learning; listening to, reading and repeating patterns is basically what the process boils down to.
@nephrenmalinari I can't really say as my experience with some of them is very limited indeed. That said, I do like the HLAL forum a lot and it is the one I usually use. I have had positive experiences with the people who use it and found that many of the members are extremely helpful.
@Torbyrne Hey, I understood that! Some of...in the second sentence you mention that you you love to sing and learn many songs. I'm assuming you mean you learn languages through song, at least in part. I know english, spanish, some french and am trying to learn croatian. I've found croatian, grammatically speaking, is incredibly similar to english.
Fasulye

@morpheus2902 Learning multiple languages at the same time does cut the amount of time down that you can dedicate to learning grammatical structures and vocabulary. It can also create problems with language crossover and interference. However, some people manage it quite well and has no or few problems at all. I say, go with what feels right and a system that allows you to make the progress you feel happy with. :) The most important thing is regular study. :)

Which language was the most difficult to learn? Can you read and write in each language
MsGazette1 9 months ago
@MsGazette1 My first Slavic language was Czech and that was a tough one to get into, I have to say. It did help to start speaking other Slavic languages more quickly than I would have otherwise done without it. Georgian is also a killer to learn! :D I am read and write in the languages I have studied well. :)
Torbyrne 3 months ago
Richard, just letting you know that I admire your work and your achievements in the field of language study. Knowing 16 languages is absolutely fascinating. Out of curiosity, have you ever considered learning a language that is no longer alive (i.e. Latin, Prussian or other)? Also, do you ever get a feeling that your losing your ability to speak one language or another? If you do, how do you deal with it? Thank you very much for your answers.
madsaras 9 months ago
@madsaras There is definitely a need to keep up languages in order to maintain one's level. It is not something you can learn and then just shelve and not use and expect it to be there forever. Of course we can usually retain a lot of things, but the fluency in talking to a native will go "rusty". I try to use as many of my languages as possible to keep them up. I have studied some Old Icelandic at university and I love the sound of Latin, though I am more for modern languages really! :)

How would be the best way to handle all of them? Thanks in advance for your reply.

@gloriale2001 Thanks for your kind words. I am trying to understand which languages you are using actively with your child. Could you just run through that again with me please? @Torbyrne any tips for learning Finnish? Note: I speak Swedish fluently, which is very useful because of all the Swedish lånord in Finnish. Dutch is my mothertongue.
VliegendeNederlander 1 year ago
@VliegendeNederlander I have not learnt Finnish to any great degree to be able to offer sincere and honest advice specific to the language. However, one thing that holds true for any language you are learning...regular study is key, even if just 15 minutes a day and going over old material or listening practice. Keeping it in your mind is the most important thing to remember. Your goal should be to breathe life into the language, so you can use it. :)

Hello Richard! How did you manage the verbal aspect learning slavic languages? I'm learning Russian at th moment and these verbal pairs are quite puzzling! Do you have any advice?
icebeef 1 year ago
@icebeef The verbal aspect takes time to get used to and it is tough to get right 100% time as natives don't always hear a mistake. Instead they hear a different meaning to the one you wanted to get across. Practice is the best thing for this. The concept of imperfect and perfect tenses, which you may have been used to in the Romance languages can help if you think of it as a basic idea to help bridge the mental gap in the first instance though. :)

Hello Richard! Can you give me some tips on learning Russian?Tips that can help me study it better.
EsteticUrban 1 year ago
@EsteticUrban Russian has quite heavy grammar points. If you want to get the grammar right, then you will need to commit to memory the declinations for the cases. A good way of doing this is looking at the tables and doing exercises. When you feel you have mastered the basics, then move onto realia (magazines, books etc.) and look for the patterns in the language. The perfective and imperfective verbs are another thing to focus on in Slavic languages as getting them wrong changes meaning. :)

tromboneJTS 1 year ago
@tromboneJTS I like to play with the formatting of my videos. I saw this technique used on other YouTube videos and it appealed to me. It is not going to be to everyone's taste, I know. My goal was to give the most and best information I can in the shortest time. :)
Regarding the German video being done in one take, well some people will always want to assess my level of the language so one take is pretty important to them, I take it no one doubts my ability in English. ;)
Torbyrne 1 year ago 3
@tromboneJTS German is a language where longer sentences are more permissible than in English. I'm a native speaker and I often write terribly long sentences in English, because I'm used to German Syntax structure

i am just wondering how to start learning a new language ?
badermuteb 1 year ago
@badermuteb The important thing in starting a new language is to make sure you are psyched up for it. Make sure it is a language you want to study. Be sure of your reasons. Personally I need to see a use for it in my life as well as like the sound and feel of it when it's spoken and or written. Then you need to do regular study (every day if possible, even if for just 10/15 minutes). Regular study is the key (even if you miss a day or so). Just remember, it is not a race - it takes time. :)
Torbyrne 1 year ago
Hello Richard,
Just curious: is there a European language that you don't understand at all when you hear it being spoken? What about Hungarian, Lithuanian, Finnish? (Because these are unrelated to any of the 16 languages you speak)
Great video btw!
Andras from Budapest
akoltay 1 year ago
@akoltay There are a number of languages I can understand because of my previous language study. The common vocabulary shared by many languages (Indo-European in particular) is a big help to me. That said, I cannot understand Hungarian, Lithuanian or Finnish to any great degree. Lithuanian is related to the languages I speak however, as it is an Indo-European language. :)

matigno1988 1 year ago
@matigno1988 I do speak some Polish. It is in the same sub-group of Slavic languages as Czech, which I speak well. It is therefore quite easy for me to understand it. I also have Polish friends, so I am exposed to the language quite often. You are right in saying that the grammar is quite difficult to master for a native English speaker.

When have you ever once seen him or heard him converse face to face with someone else in their native language. Until I actually see him somewhere else face to face having a conversation with someone in their native language, he´s full of shit and a fake. Theres no way he could hold a convo in half of the languages he claims to know.

Its pretty long though, Ive been on it for a few days and Im still on level 1 unit 1 out of 3 unites and theres 2 other levels...but definitely check out some of the websites he mentioned
andrewl5201 1 year ago
@dscottn101 I have never used Rosetta Stone exclusively, so I cannot give a complete appraisal of it. I can say that product gives plenty of listening practice. The voice recognition and correction was a little buggy for me when I tried it in Mandarin. It didn't always pick up on mistake in tones. It builds up language knowledge slowly through repetition. Repetition is key to language learning; listening to, reading and repeating patterns is basically what the process boils down to.

Fasulye
