i think both of you guys have something wrong in your statements (marcmeddings, and 6661musichrist). bass isn't really the MOST important part in the band, but yes it is very hard to be good at it. the most important part would have to be drums to keep beat and rhythm cuz without them everything would be outta whack. and no, not everyone can sing thats a huge overstatement. professional singers like Randy Blythe and Brian Fair had to have vocal lessons. singing is actually hard

anyone can play sinple bass likes (like paddling one note or simple scales). But if u play harder stuff, its hard... in fact, usually harder than guitar. The strings are thicker, the frets are spaced out more, and the strings are further apart, making things like solos or playing fast riffs like Crazy Train more difficult.

And as to it being important, it doesnt stick out, but it is just as important at making the final product as far as the subtle sound and keeping the beat.
