Anyone who desires to join the Armed Forces can find their way to a federal office or be directed to the nearest military base. DoD spends millions a year on advertising & reach more eyes then recruitment offices anyway & a better expenditure of taxpayer dollars then real estate (although some feel it to foul the airways). Don't know how much awareness existed at BHS prior to 7am. 1st many students knew they could not skateboard. Several pushed & called racist names by the pro-war people. 1st the kids were confused, then they realized these peeps were from out of town, then they became aware they were there to support the war. Public figures bear an extra burden, which is why the Berkeley City Council is called hypocritical. BCC espouses one set of beliefs while accepting funds from those they disdain. That's hypocrisy.
1. The simple facts are; the majority of the populous of the city of Berkeley is against the war and have been for many years. The majority of the populous would never enter a recruiters office let alone endorse and participate in this war especially at this stage of the game. The majority of the city of Berkeley has always been strongly against war and injustice.
2.The majority of the city would not feel that it was right or honorable if their only child was killed in Iraq at 17,18,19 years old. The majority of the people participating on the anti-war side of this thing feel that if many other towns participate in these sorts of activities that it will draw more awareness and attention to the war (especially in these recent days when the focus has shifted to the election, the housing crisis and the collapsing economy.)
3.The majority of Berkeley more than likely feels that if more towns participated in these sorts of activities that the war would end much sooner (as these sort of activities ultimately ended the Vietnam War) their friends and family in the war will have a much greater chance of coming home alive and trillions of dollars in our tax money and social security would not be funneled into funding this war.
4. We will borrow much less from the Communist Chinese therefore having to pay back much less to the Communist Chinese than we do now. All this being said, I believe that there is at least a slight chance that the majority of the populous of the city of Berkeley may be okay with what's going on especially if they were keyed in on the greater implication.

I think my point was we don't actually KNOW what the majority of Berkeley thinks, feels, or would do... and that the people who haven't spoken need to take responsibility on themselves to speak -- whatever they say -- or they must understand that their opinions etc. won't be considered.
Also, aside from the fact that this recruiter doesn't talk to anyone under 21, and an all-volunteer military means no draft...it wasn't the City Council's call to make the resolutions.
Look deeper and be more open. I have lived in Berkeley a long time, as you sound to have also. I think if you really read what was written and look deeper into and are more open to it, you will see that what was written are more than "interesting assertions". I would actually willing to bet a great sum of money that at least 51% of the city (really much more) would agree, as I said, "if keyed into the greater implication."

Long talk, excellent test scores. She thought awhile and told them she really wasn't interested and they never called again.
I asked the recruiters about Berkeley; they said the worst part is the parents who curse them out and accuse them of stalking... only to find out their son or daughter had initiated the contact.

3.Hell, it was going to be our job. And in this day and age when college will put you into debt for life, barely anyone can afford health insurance let alone life insurance, down payments and property taxes and the minimum wage will barely rent you a nice box in the Tenderloin.

Skateboarding was before school & there was a student rally during their lunch hour AND day had nothing to do with blame. One problem with the High School is that there is very little diversity of political opinion among the teachers, and no less professional objectivity.

It does not follow that if you stop recruitment three will be no more troops. Anyone who desires to join the Armed Forces can find their way to a federal office or be directed to the nearest military base. DoD spends millions a year on advertising & reach more eyes then recruitment offices anyway & a better expenditure of taxpayer dollars then real estate (although some feel it to foul the airways). And, while I thank you for your service, no one who has died for this lie is my hero.

Don't know how much awareness existed at BHS prior to 7am. 1st many students knew they could not skateboard. Several pushed & called racist names by the pro-war people. 1st the kids were confused, then they realized these peeps were from out of town, then they became aware they were there to support the war. Its a good topic, actually, thanks RKingman. I thought about what you said and concluded that I am not called on to look at both sides, nor is RainbowPuddle. We are called on to listen to both sides respectfully when we can, and NOT to say one thing while doing another.
Public figures bear an extra burden, which is why the Berkeley City Council is called hypocritical. BCC espouses one set of beliefs while accepting funds from those they disdain. That's hypocrisy.

The majority of the populous would never enter a recruiters office let alone endorse and participate in this war especially at this stage of the game. 2.The majority of the city would not feel that it was right or honorable if their only child was killed in Iraq at 17,18,19 years old. The majority of the people participating on the anti-war side of this thing feel that if many other towns participate in these sorts of activities that it will draw more awareness and attention to the war (especially in these recent days when the focus has shifted to the election, the housing crisis and the collapsing economy.)

Interesting assertions. I think my point was we don't actually KNOW what the majority of Berkeley thinks, feels, or would do... and that the people who haven't spoken need to take responsibility on themselves to speak -- whatever they say -- or they must understand that their opinions etc. won't be considered.
Also, aside from the fact that this recruiter doesn't talk to anyone under 21, and an all-volunteer military means no draft...it wasn't the City Council's call to make the resolutions.

Look deeper and be more open. I have lived in Berkeley a long time, as you sound to have also. I think if you really read what was written and look deeper into and are more open to it, you will see that what was written are more than "interesting assertions". I would actually willing to bet a great sum of money that at least 51% of the city (really much more) would agree, as I said, "if keyed into the greater implication."

You use "majority" and I appreciate that. Code PINK and the City Council have used "Berkeley", "we" and "everyone in Berkeley". By my existence I prove its not everyone -- but I don't know how many like me there are. If its a small minority, fine... they can use "majority" too.

The reason I appreciate this calm discussion is that we have finally come to a point of agreement. Majority rules. But, I say rules within the constraint of constitutional law. As I was going to say -- this honestly isn't about the war for me, its about the City Council's arrogance in overstepping their authority as a town government.
I'll believe your 51%, but I also believe that the only way to remove the recruiting office from Berkeley is to ignore it into oblivion. Legal & final.

I believe your experience happened. The only experience I have is going with my 17 year-old daughter to talk to the Navy, who had contacted her after she mailed them a post card. Long talk, excellent test scores. She thought awhile and told them she really wasn't interested and they never called again.
I asked the recruiters about Berkeley; they said the worst part is the parents who curse them out and accuse them of stalking... only to find out their son or daughter had initiated the contact.

1. Yes, I use majority because this is the truth. Code Pink and the council use the city of Berkeley because it is assumed or "goes without saying" when an official, government type or other, assumes the city of.... that they speak for the majority, which is truly only 50.01%.

I feel the reason why many people have voiced any opposition to the resolution is only because they are ignorant or uninformed of the greater implication (which is as I said; using the Vietnamese Conflict as a historical land mark, the only true way to extract from this occupation) or they fear or disagree with the hostility, aggression and bad PR they me be drawing. It truly takes a certain type to be a role model or a leader. Most folks could never be either.

wow, do you have it all wrong. Very few cut classes. One teacher brought a class out to draw. Skateboarding was before school & there was a student rally during their lunch hour AND day had nothing to do with blame. Many of these "kids" are a lot clearer about the world then many of the adults opposing them, who would rather see them in uniform and/or dead!

I'm interested in your assertion. There were lots of BHS kids at the demonstration throughout the day; they either cut school or came with their teachers. One problem with the High School is that there is very little diversity of political opinion among the teachers, and no less professional objectivity.
We used to want to set up a "foreign exchange program" with a similar sized Midwestern high school, to expand the thinking of both communities.

It's good to think we've something to learn from other towns, but what could that be? Tolerance? What does Mid-West thinking offer us? Why tolerate militarism? Revisionism and Denial? You wish a class on "intelligent design"? I greatly prefer Berk teachers to be progressive thinkers and activists. But let's keep the chronology honest.

This caught the differences perfectly. I was called a bitch by a kid from over there, and that woman who carries her kids picture, Deborah Johns, came over and told a young woman that her Muslim husband should be tortured, that I was lying about my son in the service, and thought she had insulted me when she made a remark about my age. They were hurling personal, ugly remarks. We were talking about the war. All they had was sarcasm and spit and a terrible proud self-righteous love of war.
