This was probably also an omen of Georgetown's struggles the rest of the way that year (they had trouble with NC State in the regional semis, and did not look sharp against Duke in the regional final).
I love the idea that referees will think nothing of the possibility of a foul when a good player misses a shot badly for no otherwise apparent reason.
Unless said player plays for Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA, Villanova, or one of the other silver spoon programs. Then they get every call.
I walked into the bar with my mom at halftime tow atch and grab dinner. She says what's the score. I say "25-17 georgetown." Then I hear the cheering and know the other side has to be winning.
29-21 at the half...the turnover at 3:50 ruined it. I knew then and there they would lose by ONE.
Like a great movie, the game slowly sucked me in. Five minutes in I was starting to take notice. Ten minutes in and I was hooked. By halftime I was calling friends telling them we had a game for the ages. Right then and there I had became a Princeton fan forever. After the game, I literaly had tears in my eyes and was emotionally spent from being caught up in such a spectacular moment in time and the realization that I had witnessed the greatest basketball game I would ever see.
I was around 17 and remember watching this game on ESPN. I was mesmerized by Princeton's offense. Loved it every time they executed the back-door layup that left the Georgetown players bewildered. I think I'm getting old.
Princeton won this game, I watched this game and georgetown was getting every call. No way they should have lost this game! it was a shame what happened, alonzo should have fouled out the first 8 minutes! he was playing thugball refs were to scared to call a foul!
He sees this and hes trying not to tip off anybody and the ref is just about to give Matt the ball. You hear the Georgetown bench yelling. The ref pulls the ball back, and they yell at him to play behind Kit Mueller.
That split-second coaching move by the Georgetown bench saved the game.
"Theres about a second left and [Matt] Lapin is waiting to receive the ball. Alonzo Mourning is playing in front of Kit Mueller and theres nobody behind him. So if Matt Lapin could lob it over Mournings head, we would have had a layup to win the game.
Through at least 1989 or 1990, but did supplement CBS in 2003 when the Iraq War began around the time the tourney started that year and the coverage was moved to ESPN temporarily while the CBS stations covered the start of the war. Recently, with the "Opening Round" Game (a.k.a. the 64/65 play-in), ESPN televises it each year since at least 2005.
lol at georgetown celebrating like they won the title...you barely beat a 16 seed...what's to celebrate about?

ref hadn't the balls the make the right call. F-O-U-L
Interestingly Coach Thompson's son would got to Princeton and coach them before he went on to coach at Georgetown.

@jre52301 After the game, coach Pete was asked if his player got fould on that last shot. His reply was classic. "Is a school bus yellow?"

The basketball gods gave that game to Georgetown at the end so we wouldn't have to see Dickie V in a cheerleader's outfit!!! lol

I'd rather have had the end of this video being Dickie V in a cheerleading outfit, with a #16 victorious over a 1 seed.

The turnover by Princeton with 3:45 to go cost them this one. They played perfect otherwise.
GREAT coaching and shows how basketball is truly a team sport.
