i had braces in high school (mid 1980s) i didn't have allergic reaction but the braces were defective! I guess that doctor wasn't to good! i have a bad habit of biting my lip and when i had braces i bit my lip SO BAD i need two stiches!

It probably was the latex in the gloves. Do you still need braces? I would try invisalign if you still need them, but looking at your teeth, it looks like they are pretty straight now anyway! Glad you are ok, merry christmas to you.

This is extremely rare. I have worked for an orthodontist for over 16 years and NO patient has every experienced this type of severe reaction. Braces are not a health risk and it is unnecessary to do testing on every patient for potential allergies. It is a shame that this young lady experienced this. I think that it is a shame that no one recognized a latex allergy earlier for her. This seems like a very obvious reaction to me.

Well, that was very interesting.

Ive had braces on before.. for 12 months

& i'd never heard of anything like that happening before. Not in Australia or anywhere.. So thats pretty weird. But its horrible to hear you go through something like that. But atleast now you can put it behind you & Just think that you made it through :)

i actually had a smililar episode.

I've went years without having tonsilitis and then once i got my braces i continuously got sick. Then one day i suddenly couldnt breathe, eat, or swallow and i had to go to the emergency. I had tonsilitis and was severly dehydrated. I had to stay in the hospital overnight on iv. and had to take meds. for 3 months i was on meds for tonsilitis. I dont know if it was something to do with my braces but it was a scary coniencidence.

It's Latex if you have Latex rubber bands on your braces some people can be allergic to it.

I'd be more scared that doctors couldn't work out something so basic. This shouldn't scare people from getting braces though, someone obviously made a mistake down the line and didn't know you were allergic to said material. Good warning though. Most (trained) doctors would've worked it out before it got worse, you just got unlucky.

thats like the opposite as me. u had a crowded mouth and i have a spacious mouth. i only have 17 teeth! So, all my teeth have spaced out and i have braces, rubberbands, screws in my jawbone and i have had 2 surgeries to get some gum tissue removed. the teeth will never grow in. after all my teeth grew in, i was missing 12! my orthodontist even told me that im his most challenging patient treatment wise!

Doctors should test for allergies to latex and the metal in braces before putting braces in, though.

this happened to me too.

well minus the lip swelling and rash.

they just kept telling my parents i was lying...

then i went to a different hospital and they told me i was having an allergic reaction to the bands around the brackets (they're rubber witch is like latex)...

they contacted my orthodontist and told him what happened...

then then next day i got them taken off and within a month or two i could breath normaly again.

In my experience wearing braces, I never had these problems (and these problems are very rare) so you should not worry! You will, however, feel uncomfortable for the first few days and you may develop ulcers (which can be treated), but remember; NO PAIN - NO GAIN! Just enjoy checking the mirror every week and noticing your teeth are looking better and better.

I had braces for 2 years- but I never went through anything like that thankfully. I wouldn't say braces are scary, but they do take a lot of getting used to- and when you get them tightened by your orthodontist, make sure you have soup for tea, or something soft to eat!

more than likely it was the little rubber bands they put on the brackets 2 hold the wires on if u're allergic 2 latex. this is good 2 kno tho. they should have asked u about all of this b4 giving u braces, that way u could have opted 4 a bracket that doesnt require the little rubber bands [cant think of the proper term 4 it right now]. the ones i will b getting in a few hours dont require them.
