Simple. So if someone breaks the law and lights up on a flight, there is a safe and appropriate place for the cigarette to be extinguished and disposed of, instead of throwing it into the bin where it will light a mountain of paper hand towels...
There are federal requirements that there are ashtrays in aircraft lavatories. If some idiot does light up in the aircraft lavatory, they have to have someplace to put it. It could clog the aircraft's toilet system if flushed, and could start a fire if put in the trash bin. It seems stupid, but it is just a safety measure.
maby for the retards that go smoke in the lavatory and nver flown and think u can smoke in a planes lavatory and then see the stickers and then put it out.. otherwise no i.d :P lol
well like "turtle441" said. if an idiot decides to smoke, they at least can put it out, instead of it flushing down the toilet and likely causing a fire and then killing scores of ppl. so its a safety measure

its either the reason from turtle441 or its an old plane. Earlier Smoking was still allowed in planes -> Thats why the ashtray.
Today it is prohibited -> They just put a sticker there not to smoke.

It's definitely not an old plane; it's an A333. I know smoking on planes is now prohibited... that's why I took this video.

I was on an Aeroflot A321 last year and there was actually a cigarette butt (completely smoked) in the ashtray in the lavatory.
I always wondered who/what/why that got there. The bathroom didn't smell like smoke at all.

hmmm... that's interesting. I can't believe people don't listen to the rules. It's frustrating.
