I love Wooden Ships..but I still think the eletric mix of Stills is too bright and loud and then it makes it harder for the 3 to harmonize....sorry-not my favorite version..still good.
I have seen them so many times and had the honor of meeting Grahm Nash. They always seem to have a magical like presence over the audience and everyone is so laid back, it's as if they are playing just for you. They only get better with age. Thanks guys!~ Dutch
How can one not get into this song and embark on this trip with the wooden ships....so beautiful and mind blowing I really relate to the psychdelic times especially with this album and these guys..........
Very nice performance. But it appears Stills is using an electric guitar. Instead of "acoustic", maybe it should be called "guitars only", or "without backing band".
When you start to look at the body of work, by these 3, and then you throw in Neil young, it's really staggering what an impact they had on the music of the 60's, 70's!
This music can never be out done. But their are a lot of tallented groups out their that could come up with something on their own by just paying attention to the times we are living in and go with it. start something new for Gods sake and quit butchering the songs of the past and get on with music as we knew it!!!!
@racesity Are you sure that is an Esquire Looks like am G&L to me? You tell me okay? I am looking for one of those just about this old. early sixties later a bit maybe. Any one got one they want to sell(reasonable please!) Angel
CSN to the Eagles is like comparing Babe Ruth to Alex Rodriguez or Rocket Richard to Ovechkin or Jim Brown to Adrian Peterson or Pete Maravich to Dwayne Wade...you look at time, all-time status, standards as factors and you see that comparisons are useless. Plus, I personally don't get that Eagles appeal...I mean their music is good but its not legendary to me.
@AndreasZimmerman yeah well.. so badly it has turned that I have nothing but mercy for those swine.. If THIS is the modern world. I want no part of it.. I'll keep advocating peace and understanding, wearing home made clothes and smoking herb til my time comes . Long live woodstock man :) peace

@fireblossom2u BUT... the best band of their era, better even then Simon and Garfunkle, and better than 99% of the bands that proceeded them, Tool being the only exclusion. If you want to argue THAT point, I'll fist fight you. And I'm a former Marine.

I have seen some crap that would blow your doors off
This song is about the aftermath of a nuclear war. Those in the ships are escaping from the devastation. The purple berries reference concerns radiation sickness while the "silver people" are wearing protective suits. The images of desolation on the video are perhaps from the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini. A similar but bleaker theme was pursued in The House at Pooneil Corner. Those of us who were adults in the Sixties were always aware of the threat of nuclear annihilation - Cuban Crisis 1963.
When he says "here we go" it's great because that's exactly what everyone is thinking when any incarnation of this song plays, where it goes from good to great.
I just revisited this video and all I've got to say is I'm still shaking. Man I don't think I've ever seen DC so engaged and joyful. Such an awesome sight. MY goodness what a performance.
Amazing. I had the pleasure of seeing them a few weeks ago in Dublin. Great show. I also saw them on the tour this clip was taken from. I feel so honoured to have seen them perform. I've also had the privalge of seeing Stephen perform solo about a year ago, also seeing Crosby and Nash, and Crosby Pevar and Raymond (CPR). God, how fucking lucky can a guy get. Music as it should be.
Saw the lads in Dublin last night 2 rows from the front. I will take this performance to the grave with me. It blew me away completly. I feel privilaged to have seen them!!
All the posters who say you can't compare the Eagles and C,S,&N are right. They are very different bands and with different followers. While I respect the SH1T out of every member of the Eagles, due to my era ('54) I much prefer C,S,&N to the Eagles. I think what gets compared here is really a popular vote vs a true comparison. I think it's very difficult to compare many of the most successful bands that we all would agree on. That's what made them great and successful to begin with.
@deadhead1065 don't we all wish we could make music like this, 3 amazingly talented guys, whose vocals mesh so well, and whose songs delivered some very powerful messages during a troubled time in the late sixties. Their music HAS stood the test of time quite well, thank you!
@nickmelon--seriously? I know it's pretty different than the original recording, but there's something so special about it. I don't really know what--but it's so strange you sy that because I LOVE this version probably above all others. We probably have radically different taste in music--it's that thunderous guitar intro to the chorus. I don't know how anyone who likes these guys couldn't like that. The most poignant part of all is we were at war yet again when they performed this.
@nickmelon--wow, pretty sure your rebuttal's got "fail" written all over it and that the majority of people on here would disagree with you, but whatever. I thought I addressed the fact that we heard and interpreted it differently already but you still had to bust out the douche-osity.
IMHO-CSN harmonizes better than or as good as any rock , country, folk, pop, soul group ever! Their music and lyrics expands consciousness and relaxes one at the same time. Aesthetically pleasing to the ear!
The Eagles cashed in on being 'entertainers' writing mainstream commercial music, where CSN wrote to have an impact on a generation with their messages. The fact that they rose to super-stardom was secondary to the meaning of it all, and a result of that message. That is why CSN has such a great 'natural' sound, because it was never manufactured.
this is the best version of one of my favs i love this one more than jefferson's but people have no idea of the power of this song. BRILLIANT i no i cant spell i dont give a fuck wat a great song it means so much to me .\\m//
just freakin FANTASTIC! No other band or group has ever come even close. to the talent that these men have in their little fingers. Before or since...nuff said...
Just impossible to compare C.S.N.& Y to the Eagles...Soooooo....... different.! Crosby Stills,etc... are like fine aged vintage wine in a wooden barrel...the Eagles, although very good...are just not quite anywhere near that.
CSN and Eagles can't legitimately be compared. The Eagles were great but CSN spoke for a generation AND paved the way for others - most notably America. Also, look at their geneology. Hollies, Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. With or without Young they were simply the best.
Eagles and CSN? Really, what are you guys thinking? It's like comparing apples and oranges! Both are fantastic bands, both have had enormous hits, and both have influenced many musicians like myself, but that is where it ends. The Eagles sing about good times, almost like fairy tale lyrics, while CSN sings about real life, the struggles of the 60's and 70's, especially the Viet Nam war, and the protest movement back then. To me, that makes their lyrics ten times more powerful.
@muttenstein i hear what your saying-- as far as lyrics, but lets not forget that Joe Walssh was right there at kent state when the NG shot at students. He has some things to say lyrically in the old days --and later days--yet more sarcastic,or tounge in cheek.that being said the musicianship of the eagles is far superiorto csn.love them both myself!
Some clown shoe compared CSN to the Eagles?? The Eagles?? The Eagles had their time in the sun, but CSN has and will always stand the test of time. Plus I think the Eagles sucked too!
Wow. I'm looking for any scientific proof of such a claim. I think this rule is modified by the drugs. For instance... this isn't the LSD version.. this is clearly the Cocaine version. LOL.
Not to take anything away from Stephen's awesome performance, but Jorma gave us a ride in the JA version, as well. It's great that this song was written as a collaboration from the two groups, so we got to hear different versions. Grace's harmonies are cool, too, but David and Graham are the "benchmark."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Get real man...the Eagles are arguably the best harmonic Rock and Roll group comparable to any. I love CSN. I grew up on those cats. The Eagles are EASILY their peers, if not better. Anyone else care to respond?
Anyone catch the Madison Square Garden Rock n Roll tribute? Different artists performed...David Crosby and Graham Nash did George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" with Paul Simon...WOW
I don't knock your opinion or your taste.. My pure hatred for the Eagles is my own personal opinion, and obviously not the rest of the world's. I just think that CSN was just a more intelligent band and had a wider range of music. The Eagles just puked out the same sound over and over.
Key words: "obviously not the rest of the world's". The variety the Eagles brought to the table came from 4 extraordinary musicians. Add Neil Young to CSN and MAYBE they were as good. Only Steven Stills could compare to Young in terms of individual careers. Only Neil Young can compare to Don Henley, Glen Frey and Joe Walsh individually. But, hey...I like CSN and Y....the Eagles are just better musician's and stand even as vocalists. Check the records, Mr. Bitter.
Joe Walsh was the only cool Eagle.. Don Henley is a wanker. It's all a matter of opinion. You can like the Eagles that's fine, but there is no way that they are as kickass as CSN with or without Y
@jabnhook2 so do I, I admit that the Eagles is my favourite band but also CSN and POCO, I really love the work the've done during decades.
I'm 18 years old and i'm aware of today's music situation and everything is more commercial and without that feeling that the musicians of the past were very used to play
stills my man...anyone remember the amazing guitar stuff on Four Way Street? Stills and Young amazing guitarists, four amazing musicians...everybody grow a heart ...
Sorry to offend your apparent lack of knowledge of Neil Young but "Lets impeach the president" is his modern war-protest song. AND the vast majority of musicians from the sixties and seventies are no longer producing music or dead. They have made huge contributions to the cause along with other philanthropic endeavors (cerebral palsy).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sorry to offend your devotion to neil young but just look around this country is bombing civilians and not one artist has come out fully against it maybe jackson browne, public enemy and the dixie chicks but where is csny dylan paul and all the others that sleep on silk with the money they made off a movement was that all they wanted silk sheets and leer jets dont care what you say they changed sides maybe they never were on the right side but silence from them SHAME
wow, most of you need to look in the mirror and judge yourself lest you be judged. it is easy to label people when you have zero understanding of the lives and stituations of these amazing artists. everyone has the right to their opinion, but most of yours are uneducated crap!
What is clearly evident djhippiegirl, just as bomb hills you resort to name calling instead of proving me wrong. One of the lessons of the 60's was not to follow leaders, too bad we didn't learn not to trust rock stars.
im saying that neil young went from ohio to lets roll and mccartney went from love love love to fight for freedom for men who live in castles built with money from a peace movement thats selling out
You call 'Let's Roll' selling out? He donated money to Todd Beamer's family, the guy who coined the phrase on flight 93. By your definition of sell out, any artist who sells their art comercially would be a sell out...right? If that's the case then everybody you've ever heard on the radio or an album is a sell out.
in the end every last one of the voices in the music of the movement sold out neil young paul mccartney steven stills maybe john lennon being shot is not as bad as it would be to have seen him years later stand with those who choose war makes me believe they only sang songs of protest because thats what was selling
you are an idiot. Niel Young never sold out. What a ridiculous thing to say, and your view on Lennon is just silly. It is clear to me that you could not know less about what you are talking about.
It's about a nuclear holocaust. this was written during the Vietnaim conflict. To get another idea of what a world holocaust may be like READ Cormac McCarthy's "The Road)

Just impossible to compare C.S.N.& Y to the Eagles...Soooooo....... different.! Crosby Stills,etc... are like fine aged vintage wine in a wooden barrel...the Eagles, although very good...are just not quite anywhere near that.
TheReach1 2 years ago
The band? Eagles are crap dudes. No comparison. The song? The Jefferson Airplane covered this particular song better than the original.
ThefirstGhostndenite 2 years ago
CSN and Eagles can't legitimately be compared. The Eagles were great but CSN spoke for a generation AND paved the way for others - most notably America. Also, look at their geneology. Hollies, Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. With or without Young they were simply the best.

@no10851pc
Oh Yes, CSNY are simply the best
& Eagles = "variétés" in french

@no10851pc
I think CSNY are the best at what they do, and I guess I am just playing favorites, but Led Zeppelin will always be the best at everything to me.

To me, that makes their lyrics ten times more powerful.
muttenstein 2 years ago 29
@muttenstein i hear what your saying-- as far as lyrics, but lets not forget that Joe Walssh was right there at kent state when the NG shot at students. He has some things to say lyrically in the old days --and later days--yet more sarcastic,or tounge in cheek.that being said the musicianship of the eagles is far superiorto csn.love them both myself!

CSN Here !!

Some clown shoe compared CSN to the Eagles?? The Eagles?? The Eagles had their time in the sun, but CSN has and will always stand the test of time. Plus I think the Eagles sucked too!

The don't even need bass and drums.

the founders of song do NOT play versions. Only other artists who play that song too can play versions.
Deep Purple does not play a version of Smoke of the Water. It is their song. Same applies here.
gillan5 2 years ago 2
Wow. I'm looking for any scientific proof of such a claim. I think this rule is modified by the drugs. For instance... this isn't the LSD version.. this is clearly the Cocaine version. LOL.
Corporations8MyBaby 2 years ago
Not to take anything away from Stephen's awesome performance, but Jorma gave us a ride in the JA version, as well. It's great that this song was written as a collaboration from the two groups, so we got to hear different versions. Grace's harmonies are cool, too, but David and Graham are the "benchmark."

The Finest Art and Music only comes from the finest Hearts.CSN Not many like them around these days!!!! Long Live CSN

Only The Eagles compare to CSN and Y in terms of harmonic style and musical talent. Then it's an opinion or coinflip...
jabnhook2 2 years ago
No actually it's pretty easy to decide because the EAGLES SUCK!!!!!!! CSN shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the lame Eagles..

Get real man...the Eagles are arguably the best harmonic Rock and Roll group comparable to any. I love CSN. I grew up on those cats. The Eagles are EASILY their peers, if not better. Anyone else care to respond?
jabnhook2 2 years ago
it depends i like CSN for their mature lyrics ..what about POCO ?
deadhead1065 2 years ago
Anyone catch the Madison Square Garden Rock n Roll tribute? Different artists performed...David Crosby and Graham Nash did George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" with Paul Simon...WOW
jabnhook2 2 years ago
I don't knock your opinion or your taste.. My pure hatred for the Eagles is my own personal opinion, and obviously not the rest of the world's. I just think that CSN was just a more intelligent band and had a wider range of music. The Eagles just puked out the same sound over and over.
Ddubya77 2 years ago
Key words: "obviously not the rest of the world's". The variety the Eagles brought to the table came from 4 extraordinary musicians. Add Neil Young to CSN and MAYBE they were as good. Only Steven Stills could compare to Young in terms of individual careers. Only Neil Young can compare to Don Henley, Glen Frey and Joe Walsh individually. But, hey...I like CSN and Y....the Eagles are just better musician's and stand even as vocalists. Check the records, Mr. Bitter.
jabnhook2 2 years ago
Joe Walsh was the only cool Eagle.. Don Henley is a wanker. It's all a matter of opinion. You can like the Eagles that's fine, but there is no way that they are as kickass as CSN with or without Y
Ddubya77 2 years ago 3
@jabnhook2 so do I, I admit that the Eagles is my favourite band but also CSN and POCO, I really love the work the've done during decades.
I'm 18 years old and i'm aware of today's music situation and everything is more commercial and without that feeling that the musicians of the past were very used to play

What is clearly evident djhippiegirl, just as bomb hills you resort to name calling instead of proving me wrong. One of the lessons of the 60's was not to follow leaders, too bad we didn't learn not to trust rock stars.

im saying that neil young went from ohio to lets roll and mccartney went from love love love to fight for freedom for men who live in castles built with money from a peace movement thats selling out
zachisbackfu 2 years ago
you really dont know neil youngs work to well
liamsdad33 2 years ago
You call 'Let's Roll' selling out? He donated money to Todd Beamer's family, the guy who coined the phrase on flight 93. By your definition of sell out, any artist who sells their art comercially would be a sell out...right? If that's the case then everybody you've ever heard on the radio or an album is a sell out.

lol how is this acoustic with that tele and roaring tweed fenders stills is using?
spatdrastik 2 years ago 2
in the end every last one of the voices in the music of the movement sold out neil young paul mccartney steven stills maybe john lennon being shot is not as bad as it would be to have seen him years later stand with those who choose war makes me believe they only sang songs of protest because thats what was selling
zachisbackfu 2 years ago
you are an idiot. Niel Young never sold out. What a ridiculous thing to say, and your view on Lennon is just silly. It is clear to me that you could not know less about what you are talking about.
