If you listen, Jerry gets to a point where it is only him doodling. I was there (3rd row) and amazed to see the rest of the band sit down and like the rest of the audience, have their jaws on the floor. When Jerry starts St Stephen, the rest of the band was caught off guard, Phil was visibly upset that Jerry started St Stephen without him.
@Lindy8018 REALLY??? THAT is something I wish I had seen w/my own two eyes - and, that's why we all went to so many shows (directed at the people that kept asking me and still sometimes do, why I went to so many "concerts" from the same band)...you never know what could happen! Thanks for the visual Lindy, cheers! :D
This show had so much goin' on. The parking lot was next to a cemetery!!! Dead Partying until the doors opened. My ticket was in the balcony but I ran up front and sat down 3rd row 3rd seat from center isle.
Guard walks up and tells me that the seat I'm in is his girlfriend's. She couldn't make it and He told me to enjoy the show!!!!!
In the 1st set, Jack Straw was a direct request. In the seat next to me was a gorgeous redhead girlfriend of the lady whose seat I was in.
She leaned over to me and said she really wanted to hear Jack Straw. I yelled up to Bobby " Hey Bobby, The Lady wants to hear Jack Straw. He looks around to the band and goes into Jack Straw. The look on the redheads face was priceless and she asked me "Who are you??" Just a Dead Head. (know better than to pick up women tripping at a dead show.)
@Lindy8018 HAHAHA! So true, stuff like that USED to happen at Dead shows all the time. But hen after Jerry's coma...it became rarer and rarer. Just this ONE solo (and it is a true SOLO...he's playing alone-just him and the Wolf!) talk about an under-rated and under-appreciated guitarist!!! He's doing effects w/his pedals, fanning, playing a million miles an hour and then slowing it down leading up to that amazing theme...all up and down that fretboard....it's magical and BRILLIANT! :)))
I don't like 1978 because it was the year the band instituted the predictable drums/space in every show segment. Worst. Idea. Ever. Outside of slowing down the tempo of "They Love Each Other."
@TheBolillo310 No Problem! It's almost JERRY'S BIRTHDAY.... :o) This jam is so damn hot.... that guy could play some mean guitar, and how! JERREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.........yeah! :)))
This was in Eugene, right? At the College basketball arena. I was at this one - an exceptionally trippy show. I never saw them play as well again after this one.
Jerry does some of his best guitar playing in space. So hard for the masses to ever get around it. He would be considered the best guitarist of all time if space was popular.
Sep. '78.... outside Seattle Paramount... had never seen Dead or even pics but friend had played a lot... so for me taking him to Zeppelin year before...he took me to Dead...(he had to go to UofW in day) so I was just hanging out on side of theater. Dude walks up and asks for a hit of what I had... Sure ! I said, "Look at that cool round building."... He said, "Yeah, that's wild. Thanks and I'll see you." He knocks on door and goes in.
@TacomaPaul That's a great story. Jerry was obviously playing a bit of a joke smoking a hit with a likely fan and the plan back fired on him. You didn't even know who he was!! He got out- prankstered that time. I wonder what he thought about it later.
this perfect my body was pulsing with energy. the most beautiful piece to date i have heard on the guitar(personalopinion) , this is why i love jerry and his beautiful wolf guitar..
This whole show is of the hook. The tones that the Doug Irwine Wolf guitar was capable of producing is amazing. The best part about this it seems so natural. He only did it at this show then again in 1989 at Deer Creek. show.
Apparently Jerry Garcia was actually in the film during the India scenes. Haven't seen him though

Wait...where is the close encounters theme? At what time in the video?
schach420 1 month ago
@schach420 He's hinting at it throughout the solo, but the full blown "theme" is at 4:42 or so...

January 1978 has some very inspiried and unique jams. It is a very underrated time in the dead's history.

Man o' man, what a jam. I remember first hearing this on cassette and getting goosebumps from the St. Steven intro!

The days before the perfunctory drums>space were great. This was one of the last shows before they instituted the mandatory drums>space routine.

I was there. My second Dead show. For hours afterward, I didn't even know what planet I was on - though I was only blocks from home.
