IS THAT FROM KOYAANISQATSI MOVIE?? I WAS ON A LIVE PERFORMACE OF PHILLIP GLASS AND FILM VIEWING IN EDINBURGH LAST WEEKEND... AND I WAS NOT THE ONLY PERSON CRYING...
I think this was used in and episode of House wasn't it? Yea, it was the episode with the ballerina who collapsed on the stage during the rehearsal. Except they showed a full orchestra performing this rather than a string quartet.
I love Kronos -- just saw them the other night playing George Crumb's "Black Angels" which was magnificent.
I probably am one of the few people on the planet who, while loving contemporary classical music, think Philip Glass is overrated and ... well, boring. He has one "schtick" and hasn't changed it in 30 years.
Pedantic, imho.
Now, his cousin Ira Glass -- THERE's a creative artist!
If you think about it though, all composers compose from within their own realm of experience. If you are a fan of Brahms for instance, you can easily recognize his compositions even if you may not be familiar with all his works. Each has his/her own imprint which always comes through.
this has been used in several BBC TV productions as well. The most recent of which was in episode 3 of Top Gear season 13 during Clarkson's review of the new Mercedes AMG SL 65 Black
@ursin1 that was the title, they are technically not songs. A song must have words. Mendelssohn knew this, it was an intentional misnomer. It was a development of the increasing importance of song accompaniment, that came to the fore with the German Lied. Much like the increasing prominence of the guitar in flamenco. Mendelssohn was making a comment on the zietgeist; at least in my opinion.
@operamezzodiva yes, it's called Kronos Quartet performs Philip Glass form Nonesuch Records, actually the cover art from that cd it's the one showed on this "video"
@operamezzodiva don't be a pedant it's unecessary, or at least go lightly. It's nice to educate but not to expect. It was released in 1995 so it's old.
@operamezzodiva this is a ridiculously unnecessary comment about semantics. it is very much a song. knowing the more common jargon for contemporary classical music is hardly impressive. since when does something have to have words to be a song?
Suspensful. Thank you for posting it.

not recently, its been out for about 14 years now. ha. and this CD has four of his string quartets.

People, it's a PIECE, not a SONG. Songs have words, and this does not. It is therefore a piece.
Is this from a recently released Kronos CD?
operamezzodiva 2 years ago 13
I think there is a CD called 'Kronos quartet perform Philip Glass' with some of his pieces, but I'm not sure.

@jalarcao No songs dont necessarily have words - an example is Mendelsohn's: "Lieder ohne worte".
