Oh, geez..am I still getting replies from people about my comment? Will all of you stop trying to make me famous? Do not thumbs up this....but don't thumbs down. I have said what I needed to say...=)
From a copy editor who uses both on a consistent basis, I would argue both programs can do virtually anything. Sibelius has a leg up on Finale for me, due to Finale's struggling lyrics system.
I think Sibelius is a little more user-friendly than Finale is.
Finale has better playback, but Sibelius has a comments note system.
Both are excellent programs.
The point is to get writing. Not to be altruistic, but I think the best music is yet to be written.
I say that Sibelius is more user-friendly, but you find that more places are Finale-friendly. It's weird, I know, but it's sort of like comparing Mac to Windows. I personally use Finale, but I don't mind Sibelius, and sometimes prefer it when the mood hits me.
@MChiribogaD simple things, which you have to do intuitively you cannot do. Im definitely experienced computer user, especially with music programs, but i had to waste my time and read the manual to make the most simple stuff working.
Here is some advice: If you are a music student and/or teacher, Finale will give you a discount. Instead of me paying $600, I paid $250 b/c I am a music student.
They're both amazing products. It just depends on which program you prefer and work better with. Personally I think you can get a great looking score with both programs if you know how to use it. If something looks off, there's always a way to fix it.
@julienthomas14, for me finale is better than sibelius but i think everybody will agree that choosing which one is the best between finale and sibelius is like choosing which one is the best between pc or mac :)
@iwingmusic I have 2 questions more and i promise i stop (lol): is this true that we can export music (garritan sounds) writing on scores in MP3 or WMA format? and are the garritan sounds are good and easy using?
I used Sibelius and it got me an A in Music GCSE, so I'd have to say I prefer that, but I'd heard of Finale til now, and listening to both scores, the Finale one sounds better, more interpretation and better sound. I guess it's done to personal preference. x
I think that all computersounds are bad if you compare it to the real thing. I prefer Sibelius because it is so easy and intuitive. I had Finale too, but after a three-week holiday I had to study Finale all over again. With Sibelius I made all copies for a Christmas Concert in one week, just after installing it. And without even a manual!!
I have been a Finale user for years. I will admit it is not as intuitive as Sibelius, however I much prefer Finale (for a variety of reasons). I think the thing I hate about Sibelius the most is the horrendous sound font it comes with. Garritan is so much better.
I recently bought Finale and a USB keyboard. (Keyrig 49) Notation does not work not the way I want it to. None of my playing-impressions are notated properly. Just a cold script... My intensions was to play on thee keyboard en see the script. Finale has to play back my notes the way I did. Now, it is just a line of notes, no interpretations at all.. Am I doing something wrong?
@wespeswes Try to set the buffer high. But seems like any music notation software doesn't have ability to display notation correctly as the way you play as to beat. Music notation software is intended to focus on writing. You can try to plug the keyrig on sound editing software like fruity loops as to good on that, save it as midi file and import it in Finale.
Both are great programs. I just switched to Sibelius and find it much easier for me to use. Finale is great once you learn the program. But, for me Sibelius is so much faster to complete a project with.
@UCVibes Yes many people use sibelius also. It's like choosing between PC or Mac. Everybody has own experiences with the programs as to I feel much better with Finale in which Finale has a lot of features to me to use.
@Omega866 You are currently using a limited function software of makemusic®. You won't find a lot of functioning tools in notepad. Like makemusic® said "Finale NotePad® is your invitation to the world of music notation software." It's like an intro to the extended version before you decide to upgrade.
I have Finale Notepad 2010 right now and it gets the piece done eventually. It's kind of like a small car without a steering wheel in a sense that it is so limited.
Personally I have heard that Sibelius 6 is way better than Finale. Quite frankly I've heard that Finale is behind Sibelius in terms of what you can do with the software.
I will have to say Sibelius 6 is better.
I'm still trying to decide which one to buy because I am used to Finale.
Does any know which version of Finale is better for Harp notation as I have tried all the free demos and cannot access really basic harp notation on them?
im kind of with you but still undecided. Sibelius makes selecting which zones to copy hard, or dragging a note you've already placed. However, transposition is easy, and there are lots of cool jazz and classical features.

@MadMagezz Yes, Sibelius 7 is more Friendly. The design of Finale is like word 2003, but the design of Sibelius 7 is like Word 2010

@MadMagezz what's the simplest thing in Sibelius that you can not do in Finale?
