Did you know Ode to Joy was originally going to be called the Ode to Freedom. It was changed at the last second due to the French Revolution. That's why it's Kaworu's song, it's his ode to freedom, the ode to his death.

Seele and Gendo were attempting instumentality, and considered the Angels a threat to that plan. Contact with Adam (revealed to be Lilith by kaworu) would have actually granted their wish. The Angels were beings fated to live alone. Coming into contact with Adam would have changed them human,or for lilith contacting adam- humans becoming god, a single mind

@anchan191989 Perhaps... the logic behind it was for it to be easier to pronounce for the Japanese speakers. the question is also asked why they changed it from Langely Soyru, to Shikinami Asuka in the new movies that have recently come out. As Shikinami sounds more japanese to me than the name she had previously!

Every character's last name is the name of a Japanese battleship, except for Asuka; her middle name is the name of an American battleship, and her mother's, 'Zeppelin' was a German one, I believe.

In Rebuild of Evangelion, her new last name, Shikinami, is the name of another Japanese ship.

Yes and no. The song itself is public domain, but the individual recording might not be, especially if it was made after the early 1920s (before 1922 and you're safe: those are too old to fall under copyright. Others from close to that period may also have lapsed due to having not been renewed back when it was a requirement). But... then again, the chances of any given straightforward recording being distinguished very easily from any other on this? Not IMO very good anyway. ;)
