your videos are very helpful. Your camera positioning is outstanding. My request is to use larger needles. I never heard the rhyhm. That's good stuff. I self taught in 6th grade and I know i'm not holding my needs and yarn effectively. Adding closed captioning too down the road will be a nice touch,
hey i have those same nedals accept pink and same yarn i alreasy made one of these but i messed up ans i am a beginner 10 years old and first time i tryed i got it right :)
I'm a teacher from Finland. If you search "oikea silmukka" here in Youtube and choose "kaspaikka"-link, you will see a much simpler way to make ta basic knit stitch. You don't have to keep your forefinger up like that - it is much quicker to keep it lower like in the Finnish video, that way you are able to pull the string straight through. You don't actually have to use your fingers at all to make the stitch, just the needles!
@lonneridder, curling is typically a function of the stockinette stitch. One way to help prevent curling is to start your knitting with a few rows of garter stitch, and even after switching to stockinette, do a few garter stitches at the beginning and at the end of each stockinette row. (Garter = knit every row, Stockinette = knit one row, purl the next.) Good luck!
I'm barely now learning how to knit (just bought my needles yesterday) and boy golly is this style way easier! Dropping my right needle every stitch and having it roll away is a pain in the ass.
As someone who learned this way fairly recently, I find that it helped a lot to keep my finger down lower and slightly behind the left needle. That way I don't need to be grabbing the stitch with either the left or right hand, or pushing on needles.
Bethintx1 advised me you do a GREAT job, I need to do a closed fabric scarf, please advise what video to follow. Maybe the basic stitch? I am a beginner, I am working on the cable cast on method meanwhile. Thank you.
Bethintx1 is my crocheting instructor, she recommended you, she teaches crocheting similar to your knitting, step by step. She advised me you hold yarn the same way she does. I am a beginner, practicing the cable cast on, but my sis asked me to knit her a closed fabric scarf. What stitch do you recommend? I guess closed fabric means no holes. I wonder if it's the basic knit stitch, waiting to start. Thank you.
She makes it look a lot harder than it really is. She should keep her left index finger closer to the needle. The movement of the right needle is a continuous circular motion like a bike wheel , that doesn't require the hand to make this awkward hook. Why didn't they let someone who is familiar with continental knitting do the video?
@Khamomil - I agree. But hopefully, she's doing that so we can see the yarn and is for demonstration purposes only. There's no way I'd hold out my left index finger that far for knitting. And, I knit in the Eastern European style which is faster than Continental.

I learned to crochet at 8, but no one around me could knit, so I tried to teach myself. I created what I called The Crochet Hand because the books were so confusing, then got frustrated because I could knit and purl, but YO kept losing the holes. I saw from you I was going into the SIDE of the knit instead of the FRONT. Well of course it wasn't working! Thank you for helping me to finally make eyelet and lace.
I live in Australia where most people knit the English way - I've learned knitting from a book I purchased in the US (that explains why I do the continental way). In my opinion, this method is faster compared to the English way. The problem is when I get stuck with a project and I ask somebody to help me out - and of course they get gobsmacked why I knit the way I do. Thank God for YouTube, don't you guys agree?
I'm really struggling. What if you have a big gaping loop in between your needles and every knit stitch is loose, but the slip stitch base on your needle is tight? I've been struggling to learn knitting for 2 days. I've looked at different books, different videos, and I still don't get it. I know how to crochet, I know how to sew, I know how to change the spark plugs in my car, I learned Latin / Medical Terminology with no problem at my old job, but I cannot figure out knitting!
hey, just curious, any other straight men out there starting to knit? I'm starting at age 40 right now. Gonna make Christmas gifts. I don't care if anyone thinks it's girly xD
@brautigan1 my mom taught me as a kid. In the process of making my girlfriends birthday present now. I never understood the 'gay' stereotype. What does twisting wool around a stick have to do with sexual preference anyway?
I've always knit continental and find this demo perplexing. I only watched, didn't listen, and it looks much more complicated than it is in reality. You don't have to twist the right needle the way she does.
What helps is to keep the right clear of the left needle and make a circular motion with the left tip: down-front-up-back and grab the yarn when you're in back, and keep the needles at right angle to each other.
I meant the circular motion is with the RIGHT tip. The uppermost is when you slide the stitch off the left needle, then you grab the yarn on the way down back and move up again to slide the stitch off the left needle. If the needles don't cross the movement can be very smooth and continuous.
when you first change from english to conti does the tension go to pot. ive never tried the conti . i go on throwing the yarn , some people say if you knit too fast you dont enjoy the process of creation. I been knitting for over 30 years
i am still NOT getting the third step!!! please hep!!! If anyone finds a better video that will help me for the third step that would be GREAT!!!! :))
English knitting is so-o-o-o much easier, and you can also hold the two strands for double knitting, or intarsia, or even Scandinavian tweandstikning, in the right hand (or leftif you are lefthanded)
Yes, you explain and demo the continental style for knit stitch very well. Also, I like your mnemonic for it. If I ever teach kids how to knit, I will use this mnemonic. Thanks!
okaay... it looks easy, but it's not so easy for left handers who knit like right handers, and crochet like left handers ... anyway... it's a very good tutorial video !
one question : shoul I hold the moving needle in my lef hand to make this go better ?? If you guys experienced that, it would be agreat help for me !!! thanks
i am having the hardest time with this!! i can knit english but i would love to go faster. i dont understand why i am not getting it because i have been a chrocheter for a while now....any tips or help would be much appreciated
Katie you can learn to knit fast with english knitting, it just takes practice..one way is to wrap the yarn round your middle finger and kind of flick it over the needle whilst still holding the needles with the other fingers.
i learned how to knit by using one knit needle and one crochet needle..since i was used to using the crochet needle..then once i understood what i was doing i switched to using 2 knit needles.
the contental method is so much easier for me becasue i crochet.
Thank you for posting your video. I've been knitting for 5 years now and never could find a comfortable way to hold the yarn. This helps me a great deal. Plus I am glad you shared the rhyme this will help when I teach my high school students knitting. Thanks again for your time to post the video.

All you need to knit is the desire to do so, and saying they're too little to try would probably break their heart!!
