Another note. I think it is fantastic! With these advantages
1. It reuses a car that would end up as scrap, many lost their lives in the scrappage scheme ;(
2. Its a classic, a globally recognised classic.
3. For short distances, it is illogical to use a car with an engine, even a hybrid, just pop to the shops for a box of tea and milk. Electric is perfect for this purpose.
4.Its better looking than that HIDEOUS Toyota Prius!
The mk2 makes a great platform for a conversion. : its relatively light, has large bonnet, and boot area for battery space. reliable componets and looks great!
Of course lithium batteries could boost the range to 150miles but with my budget its heavy leads for now.
Another note worth mentioning is the lack of maintenance, apart from watering the batteries every couple months its super reliable!

yea, manual transmission is best suited to dc motor , it has racing clutch to handle extra torque! will spin the wheels of the line from 2nd, and 3rd in the wet!!
electric conversion is not expensive when you take into account the cost of fuel against battery life and charging costs. Its just the initial investment that people need to adjust too. Many companies building electric cars are planning to lease the battery pack to reduce the purchase price.
how much does a conversion cost I wonder? I heard these cars can go as far as 180 miles after one charge?.. that's pretty great! If engine conversion is cheaper than buying the actual car I'm sure many people would be interested.
@draggonhedd Trouble with TDI is that most local laws would not permit putting a diesel into a non diesel car. I want the car that also costs me 30 cents to drive 30 miles+. Diesel would not allow that level of affordability. Plus, no more oil changes, tune ups, most maintenance disappears. When the motor goes I will either put a brand new 16v in or electric conversion.
@draggonhedd VW disagreed and built an electric Mrk2, the CityStromer. Any and all cars should be electric and the Golf platform in particular is very well suited for it. In a few years when batteries are cheaper, everyone is going to want an electric car.
The Queen must be so proud of you!!!

@djkenny aw, i would totally put a TDI in it instead. some cars should be electric. some shouldnt. i dont believe mk2s should be electric.
