  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Great video. I agree that the baby should after discovering what gender herm is to decide for herms self what surgeries should be done. Not the parents or doctors. Elder Vickie

  • i watched this because i have very good friend who wants to take the next step with me but he is scared because he is intersexed and is scared i wont understand, and watching this helped me understand him a little more, thank you for posting this.

  • This was a very eye opening documentary.

  • Thank you for this upload! I'm doing a paper for sexual reassignment surgery and this was very helpful. Thank you so much!

  • I think the guy with the hypospadias would have wanted to be in first or out last for showers etc if he'd never had any surgery without his consent, and that as soon as he could have given consent he would have.

  • i totaly agre with Chesterroo

  • Thanks a lot for the video!

    Is Devore XY or XX?

And the mother who sings at the end has a wicked beautiful voice!!

  • one shouldnt use sharp objekts on kids private parts unless its absoluetly nessesery

  • It's the same as circumcision. I don't feel that is right either. Mankind thinks they always have to "fix" everything. Since when is the world a perfect place? If you bring a life into this world I think that THEY should be able to decide who or what they want to be. The parents and doctors who decide are NOT being fair. Normality is over rated anyway. We are all unique and special. I would never put my kid through this surgery, including circumcision. Let them decide for themselves. Love only.

  • Don't pigeon hole all "doctors" and all "parents"..they are individuals too and have differing opinions. It's sad that they only portrayed one idiot doctor with closed minded views.."they" are not all that same, just like IS's are not all the same.

  • I guess you are right not to pigeon hole all but it is the kid who ultimately has to live with others decisions later in life. I just feel for them. I'm sure it turns out well in some or maybe most instances but in others it is a lifetime of pain for the kid. It's a tough call for the parents and the Docs I am sure but just seems somewhat unfair to me for the one who has to live with the decision or without a voice at that time. Just my opinion I guess but I can be as wrong as the next person.

  • This is an excellent documentary and I hope that all spectrum of society, Politicians, Parents, families and religious leaders learn from this.

  • thank you for posting this video. very informative.

  • Having a doctor assign a gender to an infant is for the parents' best interest and disregards the individual completely.

I really hope this practice changes soon. I feel for these people who just want to be the way they were born. LET THEM BE

  • That doctor seems like he would push distraught parents into choosing to cosmetically surgically alter their children's genitals (i.e. as in the case of surgery to reduce clitoromegaly). As if the problem he's trying to remedy is the fact that parents just 'can't handle' their baby's ambiguous genitals! Babies with all sorts of 'different' bodies have been loved deeply by their parents! For shame, creep!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • why didn't they just let the baby be?

the main reason I looked up this topic was because of a House episode that came on Monday night...

it just confuses me. If my child was born intersexed i would just leave my child alone. Either way the child is going to learn the truth.

  • The things doctors insist on doing to babies are barbaric, these children should be let go, to grow and once they hit their teenage years, and they can decide for themselves, what gender they feel that they are, then, they should get any surgery if they even want it.

  • If it is not life threatening then no surgery should be carried out unless it is deemed detrimental to the persons mental health. Anyone else making this decision without the consent of the person affected should be bought to trial.

  • newhippy, for some reason a person who prefers dictatorship to free choice marked you down.

I agree with you completely, who are we to make these decisions for other people?

  • sounds to me as though these children have been used like lab rats!, disgraceful. I wonder what the success rate of this operation is and what the failure rate is. Also isnt it their right to know what happened to them at their birth. It appears that some of these children have no been informed of this fact until later on in life...that i find disgusting.

  • the person born with this should be only person who makes the decision as to what sex they see themselves as. The parents should not have to make a decision regarding this as it is not their decision to make. The Doctors should not be able to carry out surgery until the person is at an age where they can make that decision themselves.

  • If you are interested in a great book on this, you should read "Sexing the Body" by Anne Fausto-Sterling.

  • Why cant we accept people for who they are?

  • Just shows to what totalitarian extent our society is preoccupied with controlling sexuality. And what obsolete set of norms is behind it all.

  • In the end I still feel there should be nothing wrong with a large clitoris or a small penis. The problem is that of our social norm or what is accepted as a "normal" sexual organ/identity. Surgeons and parents just project their own insecurity when facing something a little different from what is commonly accepted onto their poor children.

  • Interesting. Thanks for posting.

  • I love how there is a growing movement to stop cosmetic surgeries on babies like thid, but how come no one views circumsion as cosmetic surgery on an unconstenting minor, also? This is why I am going into nursing, to help parents understand that it is NOT their body, it is their CHILD'S body, leave it the way God made it and let them choose later what they want to do.

Thanks so much for posting this. Extremely informative!

  • Hi. I think you've made a very important point. It is interesting the changes that people make in their children's lives without even giving it a second thought. I think it all boils down to children's rights and given the late introduction of child labour laws, the situation can seem discouraging, but yes, it's great this information is being shared and people are being encouraged to really think about the decisions they make on their children's behalf.

  • @krystle8277 I can see where circumcision should be given to people who consent. Mine was some when I was an infant. I don't mind it though. The fact that I never had a yeast infection is a good thing. That is the reason that they are done. It is a sanitary thing, not a cosmetic thing. I do agree with everything you said, though. Don't take away my choice.

  • dum dum Doctor, what gives you the right!! you dum fuck of a doctor!!

  • biological sex as well as gender identity are spectrums, so stop trying to catagorize unique individuals. I cringed watching the doctor sweet talk to that baby at the end. Unless the case is such like katrinas, cosmetic genital reassignment is just a reflection of the fissure of insecurity that runs through our society

  • Exactly! oticklemyfancyo. I keep wondering why it's so hard for society to accept that nothing comes in unique pairs of two. Even in one family, everyone has different hair and eye and skin tones (and let's not speak of varying sizes of the gender parts *smile*) so why is sexuality so different? Glad they made this film though because it brings the topic to the forefront so people can think about it and help shape future decisions.

  • really? who is going to trust their child with that doctor? I can't imagine allowing him to mutilate my child simply because I was uncomfortable and unable to adapt. The parents demanding the surgeries, and the hospitals performing them are symptoms of our inability as a society to evolve and our obsessive unwillingness to adapt without being forced. that makes me so sad to be human, as beautiful a thing as it can be...

  • its pretty sick that some people frown upon even talking about people with this mutation they cant help it they were born that way the parents cant help it either they go in the hospital thinking nothings gonna be wrong and they end up with a mixed gender baby i mean its sad but all organisms mutate as a fetus sometimes its nature but people who treat intersex different are just terrible there not transexuals they were born both male and female u dumbasses open ur eyes damn

  • This is an eye opening, I didn't realize they perform this type of surgery at birth. To be honest, I didn't know the word "intersex" existed, till now....

  • thank you for posting the video/documenatary.

For others watching, please don't forget, that surgery without consent on intersexed patients, not only happens as infants. Many intersexed will have surgery long into adulthood, often without consent, surgouns make bad decisions, and they force a gender that may or may not be the right one. For those of us who know what is like, talk to others and share your story, let the world know, our bodies are our's and ours alone to decide what we are.

  • Iraqidolphin, Antigeekess, and others...

You are soooo very welcome. Us humans are the stuff of life... Every other thing that we observe that is a creation of life is so varied (flora and fauna, for example) that I find it hard to think that we are not equally if not more (because of our 'intelligence') diversified and we should have the right to be who we all are instead of being neatly (and sadly) packaged into Male and Female. Can us complex humans really come in only two varieties?

  • Two 'normal' varities. Such mutations are rare enough that it could be argued they 'shouldn't' exist. But the fact remains they do, regardless of whether they should.

Should we 'fix' these rare anomalies through genetic engineering when the technology becomes avaliable, as that would be a more natural solution that cosmetic surgery? I honestly just don't know.

  • "Gender, it seems, is a work in progress for ALL of us." Yup.

"It's our children themselves who must tell us who and what they are." Amen to that.

Thanks again for putting these up.

  • glad to see you here...i cant comment now but please remind me to get back hgere to talk....right now i am too tired to comment!#hello and ciao for now!:)

  • It's kind of like breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Women who wait and choose to have it are more happy with the results than those women who have it done immediatly. It takes a while to adjust and people need support. Kids and youth should have support groups prior to any decision to operate.

  • Thank you for posting. How many kids or youth can say to their doctors "this is where I can feel sexual pleasure so don't cut there?" It can take many years for some women a long time to learn to orgasm.
