  • Fantastic vid. I'm the son of Lt JG Ed Allen, Jr ('64-'66). I still have the plaque with the ship's coat of arms -- the black cat, the playing cards, the four leaf clover, etc.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • My father, TJ Edgin, Sr., honorably served aboud this ship for close to 4 years, I believe. He was also active in many reunions. He'll 83 tomorrow - June 24, 2011 - living in Okla. City - and still going strong. I'm going to try to find a way to let him see this... Thanks for the post!

  • uss norton sound avm1 weapons research ship, deck ape 80-83.

    great vid dude :)

  • I was on that Great Lady from May 1962 until December 1964. Aviation Department. Anyone still around e-mail me. jackcountyman@yahoo.com i would love to hear from you. I will never forget the friends I made and the people i had the chance to meet. You were all a hell of a good crew!

  • Great footage I was on both sally sound and the currituck in viet nam , okinowa ,con

son island. I was with vp 40 When the currituck commenced firing on land target in

non gun crews and nonesential pers where locked in the passageways i do not know if it was the heat or rocking of the ship most everyone fell asleep MIKE KANE

  • Thanks for this information. The only ship I served on in my 4 years in the Navy and that was to meet her when she returned from her Westpac tour for decomissioning. It nice to know a little bit about her history. I kind of wish I had a change to be on her at sea. I even had to take the ferry when they towed her to Seattle. Again thanks.

  • Great video clip. I was the son of the CO in command '52 to '53. Capt J. F. Quilter. Still remember visiting the ship in San Francisco Bay. John F. Quilter

  • great video, I was there from 1963 to 1964 does anyone know a tucker, mike Renn if so please responds,

    Thanks again

  • Wow, what a cool video!! Jack, thanks for posting it . My dad was onboard the Sally from 62-66. I believe he was also in the V2 Division!

  • My brother served on the Sally and was killed in an auto accident in Bangkok, June 6th 1966. I wish I could find something out about him and his service. Our mother died last September wondering to her dying day if the story the Navy brought to them was the truth. His name was Richard V. Irish I think his last rank was BM3 that is what is on his head stone.

  • I served on Sally from mid 1962 until November 1964. I loved that ship and it was an honor to be in the Air Dept. I was the coxswain of ARB-2 and was ABH3 EAKMAN with about 12 guys in my crew. I wish I knew where they were today. I made many good friends while I was on Sally and think about them to this day.

  • Great video. My Father was career Navy(1942 to 1967)and we miss him dearly. Thanks for posting

  • Thanks Jack for the memories! I served on the Sally in those last days and have lots of good things to say about all of her crew. I'll never forget the times like in Cam-ran waters and the hot humid nights sleeping on deck. Those are times I think of alot. I think the US Navy lost when the Sally was put in mothballs! That was good duty compaired to the carrier duty on the Yorktown!

  • @beemanlee I was on the Sally from 62 to 66. Does anyone know when were the two months that we drew Hostile Fire Pay ? We got one month of it when they shot down our mail plane. I think we were anchored in Cam Rahn at the time. I need to know so I can put in for PTSD

  • @arkensaw1,

I don't remember the dates, just the years I spent on Sally. I was an ET in OE Division. What is PTSD?

  • I also served aboard the Salisbury Sound from 1959 til' 1961. I was in the Airdale Boatswain Mate Division and I loved every minute I spent on board. I lost all of my paraphernalia from my time on board during hurricane Katrina. I mostly miss my year book from 1960. My name is Ray and my closest friend on board was a fellow from Wisconsin named Rudy. I hope he see's this footage. By the way, our captain was the greatest. Thanks so very much for this film, it's all I have now.

  • uss norton sound avm1, my last ship :) good vid!

  • My friend i worked with served aboard this ship. I only wish i could find an email address for him , so i could show him this viddeo. His Name was Jack Jones. Anyone know him ?

  • Great Video, Webbfoot. Enjoyed every minute.

  • This AX2 Was in V-2 Div. in 1962, EAOS came up as The Sally deployed in Aug of 62. Film is awesome. I rejoined the Navy in 63 and retired in 1987 as AXC.

  • @ChiefAXCUSNRET I was in V-1 Div. ARD3. jackcountyman@yahoo.com I'm 68 now. God bless

  • @jackcountyguy I'm 68 also.Live in Texas. E-mail me.

  • Brought back interesting memories to this sailor who shared the seaplane tender experience in Vietnam in USS CURRITUCK. Except that CURRITUCK set a record as the first and only tender to conduct actual shore bombardment with her 5" guns. Stan Virden

  • Thank God I wasn't on the Currituck when that took place. All that rust falling from the ceiling while you're trying to eat.

  • Actually, the rust was on the ammo, WWII surplus that behaved erratically. The worst was our return to Con Son, when a young sailor on watch by himself in the 5" powder magazine started fiddling with a hand grenade fuse and pulled the pin. Messed up his hand and face, and cost me a lot of paperwork as investigating officer. FSV

  • vivahaus ,

The Sally did some coastal shelling with her 5in 38's on her last Yankee Station cruise.

  • Great video Mark..Sure brought back some memories, even tho I was aboard your Sister Ship, the USS Currituck AV-7..Hope we can have that combo reunion..

    Nathan..

  • Real good Jack! You have some great shots of the Sally.

  • Excellent video - brings back many memories.
