hahaha omg that is so funny you know what stoke me befor is that when you go out of school on a early age moste of them aren't as dumb as people say they are
The curse of the pharos is actually a fungus that would live in the tombs. When the "explorers" would open the tombs they would breath the fungus and within a few weeks some of the "explorers" would die from it.
A fungus? What corner of your ass did you pull that out of??
The whole thing is invented, just like every other silly superstition that men have come up with. There's no fungus involved! Well, ok, maybe the people who invented the story were on hallucinogenic mushrooms at the time, but there's no OTHER kind of fungus involved ....
@c6gunner Actually, what it is is the balms and chemicals the ancient egyptians used in the process of mummification. They sit dormant in the tombs until the tomb is opened. When the first tombs were opened, they had no idea and yes some people died because they inhaled these fumes. Nowadays, archaeologists have to open the tomb and leave it to air out for I believe 24 hours, but it might be 48. Discovery Channel. ;)
I've seen no evidence that "balms and chemicals" lead to death amongst early archaeologists. The mummification process is well understood, and, though some of the things used could be harmful, it's unlikely they would have been present in high enough concentrations to kill anyone. Otherwise they would have killed anyone involved in the mummification and burial process, also.
No, the whole thing is most likely just a case of magical thinking combined with confirmation bias.
@c6gunner You're right that the chemicals were not present in high enough concentrations to kill anyone, at the time of mummification. It's how they bonded and sat in the dark dank tombs which concentrated them. I forget what it was called, but Dr. Zahi Hawass explained it during a special on the Discovery Channel.
@28MLynn You seriously need to read Dr. Zahi's wikipedia page. Also, stop believing everything you see on TV. The discovery channel is a good resource, but they still do a lot of stupid things (ie. Ghosthunters, Mystery of the Crystal Skulls, etc) and often present people who make unsupported or outright fabricated claims.
Chemicals don't magically become more toxic with time. Even the contemplation about spores is more credible than this "chemicals" stuff.
@c6gunner Wikipedia? Seriously? That's your source? Hawass wouldn't have said it in a documentary if it was a load of crap. Ghosthunters and Mystery of the Crystal Skulls has absolutely nothing to do with this. The information is coming from Dr. Zahi Hawass, Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs, not some mystical paranormal show. Believe what you want, I could care less. You won't be convinced, because you have to be right, you have to be the smartest.
As long as you don't have a better source, you don't get to belittle wikipedia. The information is there - if you chose to ignore it, that's your call.
