Yeah, black metal at its pure state is not for everyone. Most people find that it lacks musicality, but I believe that genre's more about feel - low production quality can really sound heavenly some times. I, for one, like "raw" black metal almost (but not exactly) as much as the more melodic or symphonic acts.

Black usually has a higher pitched scream rather than a growl. higher toned guitar with more synth. Usually lyric themes relating to satanic themes

death has much deeper, "brutal" riffs with growling and deeper bass drums. lyrics revolve around killing people for the most part.

most of the metal now adays has a little of both qualities such as these guys. more black I'd say though

Funny how people always just give the face value discriptions of those genres. Black Metal is NOT always about satan or "evil". It is mainly about how many religions / people have been wiped out in the name of god, or a god. Which is also 50% of Death Metal's lyrical content. Death metal uses just as much religious imagery as Black Metal. Where Black Metal will not directly sing about stalking and killing someone, Cannibal Corpse will.

Alot of Death metal bands favorite topics are Death, be it murder, suicide or any other way, and Religion. Who doesnt like taking pot shots at organized religion. Deathmetal focuses more on the "mindless zombie" aspect of religion, whereas Black Metal really enjoys pointing out how badly its messed up over the years and continues to. How it rewrites its book(s) to make corrections to things that "really happened" when someone points out a major flaw.

As for sound Black metal has a more raspy (not high pitched, learn to hear notes people) sound to the vocals, with a bit of growling in there for spice. The guitars are NOT tuned higher, most of either genre uses a drop C tuning. Black metal just has NO low end in their amps making it sound like its a higher note. Cant forget the keyboard. Death metal is pretty much the same all around, growling, LOTS of low end with a more toney sound, and a more agressive less technical feel to the guitars.
