I don't think the bottle won him anything in the end. He was just a younger fighter taking it to an older one who was near the end of his career. I think a young Arguello would have done exactly what you're saying, but he was past his prime. Pryor knocked him out in 10 during their rematch without Panama Lewis in his corner. This fight was at the wrong time for Arguello. Pryor was landing more combinations throughout. The fight was going Pryor's way from the first round on.

All I know is this. Pryor fought Arguello again and destroyed him in that fight. He had no black bottle and no Panama Lewis in his corner. Just two fists that knocked Arguello out in 10. Also, Pryor had great power in his hands and fought like a machine that never runs out of gas since he was an amateur. Bottle or no bottle, he won most of the rounds in the first Arguello fight. He was ahead on the score cards and Larry Merchant had him ahead as well before the bottle was used.

@toeraged. Not really. Cheating in boxing happens all the time (Vargas for ODLH) and fighters don't get hurt (in fact Vargas got knocked out). Secondly, as i said it was up to Collins to quit in the 2nd round if the punches were hard. Guys get seriously hurt (McLellan) even if there is no cheating so they have to decide about their health first and foremost. As for Collins alcoholism as i just said Collins was cleared to fight but chose not to (as per his dad) cause of the lawsuits.

However, Panama (and Resto) didn't consider the consequences for Collins, which is the problem here because there were devastating consequences. One of Resto's corner men, a guy named Black, did protest what they were doing and ended up dead before Collins died. There were people making money behind the scene.

@chapinrey Either way, Pryor was ahead on the cards and gonna win a decision. Arguello needed a ko by that point. Pryor fought in that fashion his entire career including when he was an amateur. I don't think the bottle won him anything in the end. He was just a younger fighter taking it to an older one who was near the end of his career. I'm not gonna say that Panama Lewis is an angel, but Pryor wasn't gonna lose that fight.

I didn't notice it, and he fought like a man possessed most of the fight. Whether he came out on fire in the 14th or not, the decision was set in stone by that point. No one had Arguello ahead on points at any segment of the fight. He would have won anyway. Had he fought a lower weight against a prime Arguello, Pryor would have lost.

I think a young Arguello would have done exactly what you're saying, but he was past his prime. Pryor knocked him out in 10 during their rematch without Panama Lewis in his corner. This fight was at the wrong time for Arguello. Pryor was landing more combinations throughout. The fight was going Pryor's way from the first round on.

I've always held Morales, Marquez, Barrera, and Pacquiao with great respect. Pacquiao's fans make him look bad with their own cockiness, but he's very humble. I agree on Arguello and Sanchez. Also, Julio Cesar Chavez is a good candidate too. A boxing legend unionizing the crop pickers is pretty amazing.

All I know is this. Pryor fought Arguello again and destroyed him in that fight. He had no black bottle and no Panama Lewis in his corner. Just two fists that knocked Arguello out in 10. Also, Pryor had great power in his hands and fought like a machine that never runs out of gas since he was an amateur. Bottle or no bottle, he won most of the rounds in the first Arguello fight. He was ahead on the score cards and Larry Merchant had him ahead as well before the bottle was used.

People can hate Panama Lewis, and I don't blame them, but the Arguello fight was won fair and square in my opinion. Great fight.

Collins was injured so bad after the fight he could never fight again and became so depressed that he committed suicide. Resto also later said that he dipped his taped hands in plaster of paris. It would be like getting punched in the face with a cast and lightly padded gloves.

@toeraged. Not really. Cheating in boxing happens all the time (Vargas for ODLH) and fighters don't get hurt (in fact Vargas got knocked out). Secondly, as i said it was up to Collins to quit in the 2nd round if the punches were hard. Guys get seriously hurt (McLellan) even if there is no cheating so they have to decide about their health first and foremost. As for Collins alcoholism as i just said Collins was cleared to fight but chose not to (as per his dad) cause of the lawsuits.

If the person who caused the accident is TRULY sorry for what he did, he deserves forgiveness. So if a driver killed a bystander, yes he should be forgiven, but ONLY if he feels remorse. Yes you're right, "everyone should pay for whatever fault they commit." But Panama has paid for his fault, and is truly sorry, and so deserves forgiveness. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's kind of the point of the justice system. To reform a man. Everyone deserves forgiveness if they are remorseful.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but collins should have had more self control. Other fighters were prematurely retired. Leotis martin didn't go kill himself. Panama is responsible for his career being cut short but to blame him for collins' mental trouble is unfair. Collins was a grown man and his actions were his own. His death wasn't intended by lewis so to have such hard judgement on him is like not forgiving a driver who accidentally kills a bystander. An accident should be forgiven...

Panama probably thought "okay, beat this guy up, move on" I hardly think he wanted anything more. That's why I think people are harsh on him. I see your point, which is Panama's intentions were to assure Resto a win, and nothing more. He had no intention to bring the wrath on Collins. I agree with what you're saying. However, Panama (and Resto) didn't consider the consequences for Collins, which is the problem here because there were devastating consequences. One of Resto's corner men, a guy named Black, did protest what they were doing and ended up dead before Collins died. There were people making money behind the scene.
