As you may know, the term "Queen Mother" has been used in England since 1577, referring to the King consort, mother of the reigning monarch. Among the Ashanti people of Africa's Gold Coast it is also a centuries old title of revernce. In 1972 the title was conferred by the Ashanti on a Black woman from the US, Queen Mother Audley Moore. Since 1995 I have taken it upon myself to confer the title on deserving women in this country whom I deem to be "Queen Mothers of Our Nation."
