I would estimate that blacks collectively use the word "nigger" at least a billion times a day. How come black leaders don't put an abrupt and permanent end to the black community's normalization of this word? For example, Chinese don't call each other "chinks," Japanese don't call each other "japs," etc. Why do blacks use "nigger" so frequently? Any thoughts?

When other races use the ER as to sound more intelligent, it sounds offensive due to it's definiton in the past. When using the original ER it looks as if you're spitting on the slang version that is unbound

@decside I never quite saw it like that, but I see your point. I had a black college roommate from NY in the mid-1980s, and he would sign off with his buddies: "you my main nigga." Since I'm Japanese-American, I wondered what it would be like to sign off on my buddies--"you my main Jap." I realized it wouldn't work. Asian Americans never use, nor associate with, all the derogatory Asian references. Of course, racism for us wasn't as damaging as for blacks, who were shaped during slavery.

That's what it sounds like to us. Just like with anything else, how you say it determines everything, but since it's so touchy feely everyone doesn't like to believe that the changing of letters makes a difference..

@decside I can see it. It would be almost comical, for a standard English-speaking black to address another black: "What's up, NigGER?" That WOULD be offensive--fighting words. The "ah" softens it, makes it colloquial, kinship-like. But here's the crux: Whether it's "er" or "ah," non-blacks still cannot use the word around blacks. Only blacks are allowed to. Is this still the case?
