Was looking for this song after watching Elizabethtown as a mental preparation THE LAST roadtrip he and I will make - and you compiled exactly what I was looking for! Is there something like a universal sorrow and need for celebration of life and keeping memories of our loved ones alive??
@celinablack Er.... it sounds exactly like Elton John!! Maybe you're not used to his older music? He used to be a tenor but now he's baritone. So his newer stuff sounds a little deeper, but it's definitely still him!!
Great job! I really like it that you took Drew and Mitch as the theme for it. This is one of my favourite movies and people often mistake it for another romantic comedy and have their minds set on that when they see it. The movie is not really about Claire and Drew but about death, family, love and life in general. Thanks for reminding me of that!
@BSCPina - I totally agree..An awesome movie that is very much mistaken..I watched it on Netflix tonight as I was flipping thru for something to watch, and boy am I glad I picked it. LOVE IT.!!!.
LOVE this movie! Not only was it brilliant from beginning to end, but it also introduced me to this Elton John track. My father passed away three years ago, so this movie and song are very special to me <3
@lovemylittlelie Thank you very very much! I'm still amazed by how popular this video is and how many comments it's gotten. Everytime I watch it I cringe and see errors and terrible editing, but people don't seem to notice! XD Really, thank you <3
@783655 lol dont worry about it :D its a great song and video. it really depicts the relationship they had, and the lack of relationship almost. its really great :)
Elizabethtown changed my life, and thats something rare.
When my father died 3 years ago, all I have left of him is his gun. The first time I heard this song it hurt my heart so much. I just wish I could go take the trip we planed. RIP daddy and thank you for being a vet. for this country.
Superbly Done! The cuts from the movie are well chosen and perfectly timed. Brought me to tears as this song from this movie has done so many times before. Bravo!
i have enjoyed this movie over and over and over and have shared it with many friends..i love the soundtrack.. all of it but this particular song with eltons voice takes me to so many places in my life from madrid spain to mississippi to california thanks to elton and all the memories he has given me thru my life
This song and video is very good. I've watched the movie for many times, it is my all-time favorite; i usually watch it when i feel down and depressed and it works every time!
60b man... 60b. The song is still as glorious to me now as it was more than 30 yearrs ago. Dave Johnson's guitar is awesome... and thismovie breathed new life into my 2nd favourite Elton track. Cheers bud.
@trenawl The guitar on this was not Davey Johnson - (although he was in the band) it is unmistakeably Caleb Quaye!! Want to know who says so? Roger Pope - the drummer on this number.
yup yup...he just makes them sound awesome....I heard that he never met his partner bernie taupin...forgot as to why...maybe it wasn't true....lol, love Elton John.
Just Watched this movie..It's my absolute favorite movie ever. I like quite a few, but none of them mean as much as this one does to me. I LOVE IT!!! And this song by Elton John is the Best!!! Thank you for putting this together. <3 love it!!!
5/5 This reminds me of my dad. he died when i was 6 years old. you'd think it would make me cry, but it actually brings back good memories. thanx for posting.
the best part of this movie? FREE BIRD! haha jk, i lov this movie. i thought i'd hate it cuz of all the southern kind of music in it but its really charming
My step-father died yesterday and my real father died 3 years ago on aug 11th.That was the end of my family. He married my mother when I was 8 and I am 40 now. This song says it all. All I ended up with was my father's gun after he died.
Isnt it odd.. Elton must have been an American History major! LOL He sounds just like he has been there. Thats what makes him a great story teller. I can just picture it from his words.
to be fair, he didn't write the lyrics, so maybe you should be saying these things about bernie...although im not trying to take anything away from elton, hes the fucking man
There's a diffrence between a failure and a fiasco. A failure is merely the absence of success. Any fool can achieve failure. But a fiasco, a fiasco is a disaster of epic propotions. A fiasco is a folk tale told to other's to make other people feel more alive because it didn't happen to them.
I bought the album from amazon, does anyone know if the 2nd volume is any good? there were mixed reviews, and some people said there are tracks on it that weren't even on the film. Great film though, kirsten dunst is amazing
The sepia toned bit? Yeah I liked that myself. It is (as you'll probably know if you've seen the movie) actually Jesse and his son, rather than Mitch and Drew. Just want to say thanks everyone for all your comments, this is one of my favourite movies, and it's great to see so much discussion and good response to my video. =]
Wow never seen this movie but really seems i should..i am a big big Elton John fan and this song i played more than once and have been listening to it for years other less known songs is Where's the Shoorah also very Gospel song & No Shoestrings on Louise which is very cool too...xx M.J. on the mornin of march 20 2009 i had a dream my dad was dying. well, that mornin i woke up from that bad dream jus 2 find out my granddad(his dad) had passed away. well that following day i saw this movie, elizabethtown and heard this song and cried and i mean really cried thinkin about my dad. true story! i liked the movie, loved the song and LOVE my dad.
I love this song and this film. The thing I enjoy the most about it is watching Drew connect with his father in death the way he didn't in life. My fav bit of the video is from 5:41
Brilliant movie. Brilliant artist. 'Nuff said. This has to be the most underrated Elton John song ever. I think most people probably didn't even hear of it until Elizabethtown. Regardless, it's amazing.
Great video, great song, great film. I did watch it over and over for one week during christmas holidays...And then...school started again. Now it's just once a week =)
All sons--love your father. All fathers, love your sons. Get to know each other, before we're gone. Wish I would of known my father better. I miss him as well as the rest of you miss yours.
One of my favourite movies and my second favourite song in it (if freebird wasn't in it it would be my favourite)I lone the video it captures all the best bits of the movie and the best bits for Drew which help him forget all about his Fiasco also i think someone needs to do a video on Jessy and Sampson with Either My Father's Gun playing or Freebird.
I miss my Dad. So much time gone by...so many things left unsaid and unlearned. If any of you have drifted apart from your father, don't wait - give him a call. Wish I could call mine.
Lost my Dad just after i turned forty too, this was the first film i watched after his passing and it meant so much to me at the time,it still does, the soundtrack is brilliant, full of emotion, your right one last road trip to say goodbye properly.....
I think theire both not thought of as real characters. Etown is just a metaphor for life, no matter how you screw up, there will always be someone who loves you and even if you die, you wont be forgotten, those who loved you will always remember you.
I don't know. I like to think that Drew is like the person watching the film. I think hes meant to be you and me, and everyone. But everything around him that he comes across in his journey are like symbols for what we all also come across. Stereotypes, if you like.
I love this song sooo much! And Elizabethtown is such a great movie, it should have won all possible oscars for being a really good one between hundreds of high budget action/thriller/splatter trash... No greed, no hate, no violence, no absolutely useless wannabe technology! Just a great movie about so many ways love can enter your life. (And no I'm not hippie or emo)
Yeah I think its just a big ole philosophical commentary on a lotta things like love, living life, family, values, etc. I don't think, as films go, its a brilliantly constructed one. Its a bit long winded, all over the place and full of tangents that mean very little. But what I love is that, that mess in itself is exactly like the existence we all experience, which the film is ultimately commenting on.
It's a very nice composition, congratulations! And I agree, this film is more about a little boy and his father, who got lost along the way... Of course, Claire makes that cheesy romantic effect, but still, she's a character somehow different form those you have seen... And because she understands and helps him, the fell in love...
I tend not to take Claire's character too literally. I don't think shes meant to be a serious one-level character who just happens to relate to Drew. I think shes more meant to represent a kind of movement of Drew's thought, perhaps inspire the direction in which his thinking goes. Shes like a quiet muse that gives him little hints about what hes meant to do next.
It's quite a nice view on her character... I agree that to him she's like a muse, wich guides him... In fact, the "musical guidebook" that she makes him, and the consequences that it has, it's one of the most delicious parts of the movie... It depends on how much you tend to analyze the film itself. It may seem a one level character, but it can reveal a little more, I agree!
I agree 783655 the story focused more about Father & Son! Although the movie is filled with wonderful characters like Claire and her mother! One the best movies I will cherish.
Thank you very much! This song played at two of the key points in the movie - when he saw his dad at the funeral home and when hes on his roadtrip home, so I thought it would work nicely if i extended it to a full length video about him and his dad. =)
great job!

It's my father's birthday today---he died when I was a baby, I never met him, but I know him through my own strength. Amazing song.

I wish I could take one last road trip with my Dad.I am so lost without him.I am 40 and I still have so many questions I need to ask .

My father died 13 years ago, when I was 12. I do have lots of memories but in the end, all that matters is to carry on and teach what he taught you.

^^ I just had to add another two cents ;>
(btw I am german so pls xcuse my bad english)

Its alright haha.

DonMoza 3 years ago
Yeah I think its just a big ole philosophical commentary on a lotta things like love, living life, family, values, etc. I don't think, as films go, its a brilliantly constructed one. Its a bit long winded, all over the place and full of tangents that mean very little. But what I love is that, that mess in itself is exactly like the existence we all experience, which the film is ultimately commenting on.
Thats just my two cents.

It's a very nice composition, congratulations! And I agree, this film is more about a little boy and his father, who got lost along the way... Of course, Claire makes that cheesy romantic effect, but still, she's a character somehow different form those you have seen... And because she understands and helps him, the fell in love...
Thorsbabelis 3 years ago
Thank you! =]
783655 3 years ago
i love your interpretation of the film...at times i think everyone needs his own personal claire in life
twelve2001 3 years ago 2
It's quite a nice view on her character... I agree that to him she's like a muse, wich guides him... In fact, the "musical guidebook" that she makes him, and the consequences that it has, it's one of the most delicious parts of the movie... It depends on how much you tend to analyze the film itself. It may seem a one level character, but it can reveal a little more, I agree!

I agree 783655 the story focused more about Father & Son! Although the movie is filled with wonderful characters like Claire and her mother! One the best movies I will cherish.

Loved Elizabethtown, and Elton John <3

Thank you very much! This song played at two of the key points in the movie - when he saw his dad at the funeral home and when hes on his roadtrip home, so I thought it would work nicely if i extended it to a full length video about him and his dad. =)
