  • Trust ya knees . U won't fall u had a good grip all way thru

  • @jadehayes Thanks, Jade....I still haven't gotten comfortable going from a gemini into a Tammy! /joel lessing

  • better than me.....ive heard it called the reverse caterpillar crawl too. pole is awesome, isnt it?

  • @trishmanny2007 Thank You, Trish!!!

  • I am wanting to put pole up in my garage, would it be sturdy enough ?

  • You would really need to take a good look at the joists and woden supports up top. If you are going to buy a portable pole, there would need to be a flat and level area at the "ceiling" to place the rosette or top part of the pole. It's really hard to answere your question without actually seeing the situation--however, MANY of the famous you-tube polers (including Tara-Karina) have used storage lockers and garages to pole in.

  • @suebickerton Sue, I have seen poles set up in garages. You probably need to figure out a way to get up on a ladder and inspect the roof supports and jopists to make sure they are still in good shape. Garages take quite a beating since they are rarely heated inside and the wood expands and contracts quite a bit...

  • dont listen to baalize joel......plain rude!! ...i think they would more than likely find...if they actually tried do do some of the moves you can do, that poleing is 1000 times more physically demanding in the sense of power and strength than jujitsu!! i think your an inspiration and i would love to have the same ability as you!

  • Thank You, Katielead130!!!

  • i think your fantastic! go Joel!

  • Thank You, Sugarlisx!

  • ugh!!! ... Jesus, im trying to learn how to get out of a crucifix submission and i have to see this shit?!

  • Hi Baalize...It sounds like youdid not enjoy the video. Sorry about that! I didn't quite understand the comment...is that a wrestling hold that you are referring to? Or were you offended by the use of a religious term for a pole move. This move, stomach to the pole is alternatively called the "Bat"...and with back to the pole, the basic hanging invert. Anyway, I hope you were not offended, and I apologize if you were! --Joel

  • crucifix is a Brazilian jujitsu move. so when i typed "getting out from a crucifix" i saw this... and yes i think this is repulsive

  • Ok...Fair Enough...I'm approaching pole primarily as a fitness hobby or "sport" and try to do the moves in a manner that is not sexual or provocative in any way. I frequently ask my daughter and/or wife to vet the videos for wholesomeness and taste. I have done one or two "pole DANCES" fully clothed--one wearing a 3 piece suit and tie--as a tip and nod to the ladies who help teach me. I will carefully examine this video second by second again and remove it if there is anything remotely offensive

  • a 55+ man in underwear alone, is enough to be remotely offensive... then you add poledancing

  • When you get to be my age...which is 48...not 55..you need all the extra years you can get. I am wearing a pair of regular old Soffe gym shorts..sold in both the men's and women's department of the sports store as running shorts...not underwear. I'm not sure "dancing" is the right word for what I do. I call it pole fitness or pole gymnastics. My wife can dance, I just stand there while she does the moves, LOL! I'll admit I may look a little SILLY, not offensive! I'm an old fart, give me a break!

  • hey there! have you tryed going without shoes? I have found that the top of my foot gives extra grip! keep it up! happy poling :)

  • Early on, tried bare foot a couple of times, but it really scraped the tops of my feet really hard and painful. ALso I've got two sharp mounting screws at the bottom of the pole (It's home-made)--so I worry acbout cuts. I use a pair of 100% Leather Nike Golf Shoes with the cleets ripped out. The leather is almost like patent leather--real grippy and sticky.

  • It's a good job! I know how it is difficult because I am also a beginner at pole dancing.

    Hold on!!!

  • Thanks! I hope you will post a video soon!

  • I'll do it today ;)

  • What the hell is he doing?

  • He was trying to pole dance....and I finally got that reverse pole caterpillar move in my latest poste! Thanks for watching and enjoying the video...

  • lmao....your vids are really funny ...but good job at having a go! :)

  • Thanks for watching! I am having fun, building up some body muscle in new places, so I'll keep at it as long as I can!

  • I havent checked in on your progress for a while, your gettin more confidence every time i do, I know what you mean about butterfly. I nearly papped them when i looked down as well on my first time, PPS. tuck your chin in whilst learning in case you fall on ya head and then you wont hurt yourself and can forward roll out if you do, xx

  • Thanks! That sounds like good advice and a couple of other people have told me to tuck my head in. It's really scary and hard to get used to the idea of being upside down and i'm trying to work on that!

  • Joel, you are outstanding! U have got that ankle cross down - at 6:17 I was anxious to see if u would grab that pole and go into a caterpillar climb! U r now at the point where u start realizing that anything is possible...and it always was although this new frontier that u have breached opens up new self confidence. 7:00 puts u in the right position for dropping into a hip hold, the opportunities are endless!! I am so proud of ur dedication Joel, the new year looks like a good one for you!!

  • Thanks! I'll have to go back and look at 7:00 and see exactly what I was doing there! Yesterday I took the mats away and started practicing Bracket and Half Bracket holds. Of course the pole is way too short for a handspring--but it's good cardio just practicing throwing my legs up in the air. But my leg and feet tendons hurt today!

  • that's just wrong....

watching a fat bald man trying to pole dance....

  • I don't think hiding behind a computer screen and making rude and unnecessary comments to complete strangers to make you feel better about yourself gives your opinions any validity.

  • DJMoscow, I'll cop to the bald part. Fat? Come on, 5' 11" at 195 make me just a little bit on the heavy end of normal. But all will be forgiven if you post a tutorial of yourself playing drums in the Carleton Barrett "one drop" style that he made famous in the Upsetters and later in the Wailers. Of course you'll have to master the triplets hitting the center and side of the high hat with that little lift off the pedal before the backbeat. Can you do it? Send a PM if you post the video! --Joel

  • well done ....my tip...take the socks and trainers off..you'll hav more grip!!!

annnnd if u can pole bare foot u can do it in anything...

    keep the vids up..xxx

  • I do occaisonally try the inverts barefoot but I'm a little leery of the construction hardware at the bottom of my pole and the basement ceiling in some moves, LOL! It really burns the top of your feet. I guess I've got to toughen up a little! Actually, I've used swimming pool shoes. They weigh nothing, expose much more skin for grip--but keep you from smashing your toes. But they are bright red and I get embarrassed because they look silly, LOL!

    Thanks for Watching!

  • Oh your doing so well!! You can invert like a pro now. Here's my little tip for the catapillar (RPK) hang on super tight with your legs. This was the only move I have ever taken a fall with...I was at the top of my pole and a bit tooo confident and didn't maintain my leg grip...BOOM! fell flat on my back. I wasn't hurt but I scared the bageezes out of me. lol Glad I had carpet. You'll get it though.

  • I was thinking about this move some more and wondering if my real problem was that some of the power needs to come from contracting the abs, too. I think that your suggestion confirms what I thought...it's both pushing the arms and pulling with the abs while the legs grip. Today I took the mats away and practiced Bracket grip kick-ups and static Jasmine hold--but I'll come back to this soon... Thanks--will check in on the forum soon--it's been real busy here. Happy New Year!

  • this is for ab control, from my yoga knowledge, i'm a yoga teacher btw : u start with the pelvic lift, i.e. like u had a full bladder and your pee was about the come out,but u had to hold it, that is the pelvic lift. and two, the navel lift, you have the distance is 4 fingers down from your navel. pull in that area, suck that area to "pin it to the spine, as close as possible". this makes the difference of feeling light as u kick up as compared to feeling heavy and being pulled down by gravity.

  • Thanks! I've beeb thinking about yoga classes as a way to increase my "body sense." As soon as I am inverted, I seem to lose any sense of where my limbs are!

  • yes, yoga classes do help with body awareness, I've seen my students lose orientation the moment they are an inverted yoga posture.

  • I think thats awesome, i reckon the crucifix is a breakthrough move, once the whole upside down thing happens, so many more moves come quickly - so don't be hard on yourself, ur fab :)

  • Thanks KrizB! I do feel just a tiny bit more confident upside down. As long as I take it slow and think about it ahead of time, I'm not all that nervous anymore--just careful! TOday I went back to upright moves--I practiced the Bracket Kick up--which is just the 1/3rd of the way up to the handspring--for cardio and strength. Also tried out the static Jasmin hold--just staying fixed in the knee hook falling forward position (no spin or motion) with the bracket grip. Kept falling on my butt, LOL!!

  • You are doing great! It seems like the larger pole is making a difference from what I can see - how do you like it? I just got my 45mm I ordered from StudioVeena the other day and I've only used it once but I love it so far, it's so much easier for me to grip with my tiny hands hehe. And your inverts look great, I can see you finally got the idea of how to lock your legs/feet...I'm also working on the pole kat/caterpillar so we can encourage each other :-) I'm about to post a video myself!

  • Excellent! I clicked on your profile and became a subscriber. I see you do belly dance also. One of the teacher's aides at my wife's school and a good friend of the family instructs belly at a local studio. She was actually my 20 year old son's confirmation and first communion sponsor when he joined the local church. Belly dance is fairly big here around Chicago--even the Bally's club has a class and it is well attended! Can't wait to see your pole vid.

  • Joel!

  • Good job! The more you practice the easier it will become. I already see a gain in your strength. Keep it up!

  • Thank You!

  • I didn't realise I was not a subscriber--I just fixed that problem and clicked on your videos--I can't wait to see your posts. I'm also a member of Studio Veena and I think she is an amazing woman--super mom and super poler, LOL!

  • Ditto on being upside down!!! I also love the pole kat but my pole is short short short, I don't get much of a chance to do it. You got the beginings and you got the flow down nicely, sliding your legs up. That is the hardest part in the beginning. Inch by inch you are adding to your pole repertoire! Bonne Année!!

  • Thanks! --I think the pole is so short I cannot get enough arm extension to do the "vertical push-up"--which I think is all the move really is (plus the core strength needed to hold balance). My elbows are so scrunched up at the bottom I just can't push. I'm going to ask Johannah or Laurie to just spot my legs inverted on the basement stairs and just practice upside down push-ups. Maybe I can build up the needed muscle power!

  • 1st i gotto say, you invert completely effortlessly now, its almost like you dont need the kick up, i can see the arms have gained alot of strength, secondly, im very proud, you may have gotten twisted on 1 attempt, but i saw a couple attempts u nailed & it always feels high when you r startin, ur head 1st, thats natural, not to mention scarey, i think you did the turn GREAT, and will have this nailed lickedy split, where it takes you a second to do and more confidently but this is a GREAT start

  • lol, the tag midlife crisis had me chucklin, i wish my hubby's midlife crisis was grabbin a pole & hangin upside down, we'd have more in common. i was wonderin where u got this song, i think ive heard of every song known to man, so it puzzled me, then i read further. yeah soon every song will be taken down, so they got a good idea there. about the pole kat, caterpillar, its a HARD thing 2 do, only try it with a real sticky pole or you'll fall head first, and congrats 1 inch is better then none:)

  • Yeah, I 'm getting really used to agonizingly slow progress. It's weight, age and time. Probably I should just do it more--like every day. But it's hard to focus in the house--too much craziness going on all the time, LOL! At the health club I can just treadmill or lift and get the regular workout finished without getting interrupted. Yes, the fight betwen Warner Brothers and You-Tube over music has expanded to MTV. Now Warner, which pulled all its vids, is threatening to yank MTV off its cable!

  • i dont think its slow progress..you have a family to boot, how fast CAN YOU GO? i think your goin faster then alot of ladies get IMHO. everyday is taxing on the body, i did that at the start but certainly not anymore. ur great no matter what honey, no need to OVER PUSH! oh great, wow WB & MTV is really takin immense action. my hubby thinks we'd be givin them GOOD pubilicty of their music , but obviously they aint seein it that way. be nice if that would change but thanks for that tidbit:) xoxo

  • wow well done on your inverting you can see how stronger you are gettung, n it just shows that these moves arnt as easyas they look to sum ppl, keep it up u will soon haver this one down, n hope u and ur family had a fab xmas n new year .xx

  • Thanks! Everything went OK for the Holidays but it was lot of driving and cooking and cleaning so it was nice to just sit down on New Years and have a beer and do absolutely nothing. Yes, I couldn't believe I couldn't just push my body up the pole---because I can do plenty of regular push-ups on the ground. It's a lot harder than it looks! Happy New Year!

  • Thanks! Just the idea of being inverted on the pole was really a thrill for me. I wish I had more pole height to do the vertical push-up needed for the inchworm/pole kat move. One of my favorite workout positions is to walk my feet backwards up the flight of basement stairs in push-up position. Then I am 50% inverted, angled down the stairs. I lift one leg up in the air and do push-ups that way. So it seems to me I SHOULD be able to do the inchworm/pole-kat thing--if I had room to extend arms.

  • hmmm *tilts head* have u actually tried it yet.. without shoes on?

  • I have... The skin on top of my feet got pretty sticky and scraped pretty hard up against the pole. But some of the stuff IS easier bare foot and I think that when I get the cross knee supported plank footage up in a few days, there are versions of that move I did with no shoes on. One thing about going barefoot is that I am just a little bit lighter, LOL!--but at my heavy weight, every little bit counts!

  • when you did that torso turn at 6:17 i was cheering you on,yay !!you are doing so so well joel, really proud of you.remember those days when you couldnt invert... distant memory now eh :-)

  • Thanks! Everything moves along so slow for me that I get really frustrated. But it's nice when I can do any little thing--even if it takes two weeks to move a pole trick along just an inch or two. By the way, I DID let go of my top hand on the "LARA"--that footage will get posted when I get more time to edit my vids! I can't remember if I got the little "hand wave" in, though! Happy New Year!

  • Mixed emotions here. Joel, I am both proud and jealous of you all at the same time! Right on!

  • Thanks!-- I'm sure you are doing really well with your pole work, too! The 50MM is nice for the aerial work, but I've lost most of my spins and am waiting for my weak and sprained hand to feel better. I'll pull the mats away in a few weeks and try to re-develop the spins on the wider pole. I've been squeezing those hand clamps every day in traffic trying to make my hands stronger. By the way, it's been in the bitter 5-10 deg F here in the Midwest, must be unbearable cold in the northern plains!

  • great work! i can deffinately see ur progress! :) luvin the effert from u always but when i watch ur vids i can totally see ur fear :( don't be so timid about it, u can be really great but u gotta go for it! u ever just run up to ur pole and jump and swing as hard as fast as u can......?! u should try practicing like that lol great work tho i will deffinately keep watchin ur progress, pole pro!

  • Yes, I 'm still a little scared--but not as much as before. At my weight and age, I have to be a little careful--stuff doesn't heal quite as well when your're almost fifty! But you have a point--I've been bike riding since 5 and I am very fearless--riding through the city at breakneck speed at 2AM, texting, LOL! I don't know--maybe if I had started pole at a younger age, I'd be more confident doing the moves... Thanks for watching--your videos are fantastic--you are the fastest poler on spinny!

  • great job joel... just like everything else that was tough when you started, it will get easier with practice!! keep at it and good going!

  • Thanks Karol! I never even thought I would get upside down on a pole, so every little bit of progress is meaningful to me. Your support and encouragement has been very much appreciated...
