The ones I had for undergraduate studies were quite Parenti or Chomsky like. The graduate ones really think this system is great. They live to demonize Chavez. The "liberals" all love Lieberman and love the Kosovo War.
I'm taking a class now called "Causes of War"(I'm an undergrad at Rutgers), and so far the instructor has stated axiomatically that the invasion of Afghanistan was legitimate, and the Gulf War of 1991 was "just." He was opposed to the invasion of Iraq, but stated that it was not imperialistic or had anything to do with oil. What really bothers me is that he makes these statements as if we're supposed to uncritically accept them.
You would be amazed at the "peer reviewed articles" in political science. They totally ignore class analysis. Most of the foreign policy establishment has decided that Iraq was not "in the nation interest": read-- it messed up corporate control over the Middle East. I'm even more shocked at what "unbiased" professors say about Hugo Chavez, and if I say anything, I'm being "biased."
If you want to read something really radical by Parenti, check out Blackshirts and Reds. It will blow your mind. You'll be shocked what it's about, and then you'll be shocked that you agree with him when you're finished.
You do know that Parenti used to be a political science professor at the University of Illinois-Champagne-Urbana and the University of Vermont? He was witch-hunted out of both of those positions. At Illinois, the police beat him up because he tried to stop them from backing over student protestors who were protesting the Vietnam War. They then tried him on a trumped up charge of assaulting a police officer.
Parenti clearly explains how capitalist globalization has resulted in an increase in the profits of multinationals, and a concomitant increase in poverty. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
dear Joe, parenti sez "wealth creates poverty..." and i really think that's NOT true, please tell me WHEN wealth started creating poverty and give one example, thanks
Just look at the Rockefellers and other elite families, how they made their money. Child labor, 14 hour work days, no benefits. They mined for coal and then left whole communities in poverty. See how capitalism works?
parenti sez: "wealth creates poverty," but every automobile on Cuba are the direct result of capitalism (wealth expands) VCR in 1965 over 100,000 dollars, VCR in 1999 25 dollars...tell me how i'm wrong
Like most supporters of capitalism, your argument (if it can be called an argument at all) is cherry picking its information and your perspective on the meaning of that information is myopic. That is how you're wrong.
please tell me HOW i'm wrong (everybody cherrypix)
look at Haiti vs. Dominican Republic, same basic people, with two different cultures...
I saw the "sweatshops" in Honduras in the 80s and knew that my ex sister in law was happy to work there, today in Honduras BMW dealership and mcdonalds with local ownership, are you comparing globalism with capitalism (two different things) HOW is my original comment wrong, thanks
First off, you're still not making a proper argument. Your post is a hodge-podge of incomplete sentences and unfinished thoughts. This makes it impossible to respond to with a counter-argument. Second, you seem like you want to ask why you're wrong not how you're wrong (the latter of which I've already made clear). So, if you put together a proper argument, I'll be happy to show you why you're wrong.
Dominican Republic.. I know a Dominican gal and her family was dirt poor. She told me she didn't have shoes throughout her childhood. Don't generalize. Gosh, BMWs in Honduras.. man I guess everyone is rich there. Why don't you move there?

I'd like this guy to meet some of the more retarded professors I've had in political science and economics. He'd eat them alive.

Speaking of Kosovo, have you read "To Kill A Nation" by Parenti? It's an excellent book.
alex19856 5 years ago
I've read parts of it. It's on my list.
