@Sonic8000 Looks like Phantasy Star II. RPGs were expensive as hell back in the day because the cartridges needed better hardware to accommodate such big games. I remember picking up Final Fantasy III/VI new for $83.
Those slips being taken to the register made the whole thing super-sweet, it gave an entire level of anticipation to the experience. My mom or dad paying at the register and taking the ticket to the cage to pick up? OOOOHHHHHH, priceless!
I STILL REMEMBER WHEN TOYS R US WAS THE FIRST PLACE TO GO FOR THE NEWES GAMES BACK IN THE DAY NOW WE HAVE GAMESTOP AND TOYS R US IS THE LAST PLACE YOU WANT TO GO TO FIND THE FIRST RELEASES
Toys R Us used to be so mind blowing when I was a kid. Walk down the isle and drool at the entire wall of games. Anyone remember that show where the winners wore a velcro suit and stuck games to themselves?
brings back memories. i remember tmnt the arcade version at toys r us selling for $69.99 and i got it for xmas! imagine that, people complain about todays prices. i remember when they were selling nes games for $19.99 as a close out sale and i thought it was the deal of the century, i grabbed Pinball and Magic Johnson's fast break, both crappy games- lol.
yups, and i remember i begged for phantasy star 3 and it was $69.99. So when phantasy star collections came out on gameboy advance for $29.99 i picked it up with no hesistation thinking i just won the lotery. Lol! True story. And i weep at the disrespect when i saw it used for sale at a flea market for $3.
See, kids! You little motherfuckers bitch and complain about games being $60. Back in our day, we had to pay $80 for a game! Sometimes MORE! So, when you're popping in the new Uncharted game on your PS3, just be GLAD you ONLY had to pay $60......
It was expensive back in the day because they are using "CARTRIDGES", which were expensive in itself. Same goes for N64 games- they were more expensive than PS1 games because they were using cartidges, whilst PS1 games we commonly cheaper since they used discs instead.
@KomicTurtle True. But, I was trying to prove a point. We grew up having to pay $60-80 for a game. Gamers today are so lucky that it's not funny. That's why when I see a game I want, I don't hesitate or bitch about the price. I'm just so tired of seeing younger people these days complain that they had to pay $60 for a game, especially when they have things not available to us back then....like reviews, editorials, and rentals.....
holy crap $59.99 for a game that looks like minecraft downgraded and being played on windows 2000 with a single processor and only 500mb of ram . lol take a ps3 bake in time and the pentagon would use it as a super-computer
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEESSSSSSSOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEE I love those old cards. You could read about a game then pick up a ticket without waiting on someone and carry around a piece of paper until you were ready to check out instead of carrying around a heavy plastic case until you were ready to check out.
@WebVManReturns .....and you had to go to the back of the store(or front in my case) where they took your ticket and got the game out of the back. You could see systems and games in those reinforced windows, sometimes going BACK to the game aisle because you saw that something was just released. That's how I got a FEW games like Tiny Toon Adventures, WWF Royal Rumble, and Castlevania Bloodlines. Great times...great times....
@AlirazaVideoGames the camera was about a foot long six or so inches tall... Meaty looking with a shiny Sony lable on it. It cost about $1,499.00 or so in 1989. for roughly 180 lines of resolution. Upscaled in this video of course.
@mokos23 I worked at a Tilt! Arcade, I filmed the machines there in 1991. Should I upload that? Turbo Grafix 16 rocked. I wish I was more persistent with filming. I filmed this for bragging rights to friends. Posting videos was a thing of distant future. But I was proud of working at Tilt!. Street Fighter 2 turbo was new...
remember that video cameras in the 1990s were still FAT and heavy. the handycam was still large and conspicuous. today cellphones do video footage equivalent to large HD cameras. notice shinobi is $60!
That store clerk that stopped you disliked this video. Wow! Total flashback for me. I really miss those days of going to toys r us. Thanks for posting this :)
wow video games are and always will be expensive thinking back now im like what the fuck 79 bones for a cartridge and then remembering it was back then. good memories overall
@TheChaos5000 Well, the production cost of cartridges were far more costly than their CD counterparts; I remember seeing N64 games priced as high as $59.99 back in its day, and the older games were still expensive. I remember seeing Super Mario 64 being sold for $39.99 at a Toys R US back in 2000, and cartridges used a variety of expensive hardware chips inside that were otherwise absent in CDs, so that drove the prices up. Nowadays games get cheaper so much quicker than they used
@TheChaos5000 to, and you can basically get a copy of Fear 3 for less than $20 now, and it hasn't even been released a year ago, and that is partly because the material used to make games nowadays is so much cheaper than what they used back then, but I really hope cartridges comeback, because the cost of memory has gone down a lot in 20 years, and it would be a great way to ship games ever since they are more reliable and are not ruined by mere scratches, cartridges FTW!!! :)
Ah, yes I remember this. Had to pay the cashier then go behind the counter to some backroom where a cashier would have to hand pick the game for you when you present the payed slip.
Thanks for the video, brings back many great memories.
damn I forgot how expensive the old school games were. Those games were legit hard and difficult. This stuff they put out today isnt that hard.I miss the days of secret codes, and guys buying game books to improve their skills. Those were the days
Hey man, thnak you so much for the post.I cant tell you how much this means.I remember being kid and walking down the game/hardware sections to read the new gaming books and to see the games. My mom wouldnt let me have a system b/c she thought I was too young. Then they surprised me that very christmas and got me one.Awesome times.Nothing can compare to those days.
@LyricalMasterMind1 50 or 60 bucks a game in 1990 dollars! That's way more than even 360/PS3 games cost today! (adjusted for inflation) No wonder I never had a Genesis or Super Nintendo back then. Of course, those games are all about $5 now and I can buy a ton :)
LOL...WOW, By you posting this...This just brought sooooo much memories. I remember going to TRU almost every wk just to hang out and look @ the new hardware and games.......again,Thank you.....for posting this.
@ColorsBright Well, it was the only baseball game on Genesis for over two years........Genesis-owning sports fans wanted their baseball fix, and thus TLB sold like gangbusters. :)

I wonder what kind of game that was for $79.99...
