I've known this quite some time. A shooting star you wish upon might be Progress burning up in the atmosphere (full of garbage, and shit). You'll see it better, as it's bigger than usual meteors.
The NASA Skylab actually made a landfall in Australia in 1979, and Mir was left to fall too in 2001. I wonder how they'll dispose of the International Space Station, as it's way too big to burn up in the atmosphere completely (none of the space stations have been), Mir was half the size.

I'd just let it float off towards the sun or maybe towards jupiter.
Failing that, take it apart in sections.
Then let the sections enter the atmosphere.
