  • 4:20 is the dopestttt

  • Sampler.........

  • This man really know what he doing

  • simply a genius

  • i cant seem to replicate that old school west coast synth @ 4:19 no matter how much i try. nebody gotta pliug in or settings that can help me with that?

  • NICE!

  • nice vid but I don't get what he means by "too much for most people", music sounds better with more entertaining hooks...

  • @JokersAce0 see but thats how you feel, he's thinking more on how OTHERs fit into this meaning the average joe who likes something less jazzy and shit.

  • why's he hating on old school so much? if it sounds good make it, he shouldn't give a fuck if most people today are too stupid to appreciate good music

  • @ActionRoad Because he is making music that other people want to hear rather than what he wants to do which is everything that is wrong with todays music. Today its all a fashion, you have to have the same elements that everyone else has which is why I'm so bored to tears with it all.

  • @eradubbo I have to disagree...there's a good number of producers (especially video game composers) using FL Studio. However, there are many aspiring producers who don't know how to properly use it and they only use the preinstalled sounds.

  • @SupaKoolEnt There are tons of people making beats who use FL (or a different DAW for that matter) and don't know how to use it, because they just torrent it and fux around with it.

  • @PtCobra That's so true and I'll admit that's how I got into this hobby. However, I started studying the tutorials and pre-loaded projects and learned how to mix a little better. I will say this (for all aspiring producers); regardless of what DAW you choose, at least try to learn how to properly use it for your needs. It's all about workflow and producing quality music. I use FL and Reasons because it fits my workflow, but I have SonarX1 and I'm learning as I go; even got a book on it!

  • @SupaKoolEnt Yeah, it's how I got into it as well (I started with Logic though), I'm not saying that's a bad thing ya know :P The thing is there are a lot of 'bad' producers because you can get into it so easy, you only need a computer and a DAW.

  • @PtCobra Yep! And in some cases you don't even need a midi controller.

  • mega best producer!

  • He tight.

Made it real west coast at the end.

  • i just dont understand how someone can dislike this video..i think there are some crazy ppl on this planet..

  • that was DOPE! Much respect to J.R. and his ability to articulate the game...You can here his passion about the craft..Definitely an inspiration

  • Nice

  • Can u name the Synths please? i recognise the roland at the top cant remember what model, but that gangster lead sounded fresh

  • @PlayStopPauseCut thats a fantom G

  • @musicmankeyz just googled it, OMG Roland actually took it there

  • hey wuzzup dude, i'm a coming producer so i like your points.so how a coming can get into the business now.

  • @Tshaynyb1 first learn english

  • Вы все Пиадры ебучии YES?

  • i wanna be a musical producer but i dont know how to play any instrument so i need to start now

  • Roland Fantom!!!oh wow

  • all that equipment for this beat?~1?!

    wowowowowowowo cries

  • @bootr0s Well...yeah. JR Rotem is a musician's musician. Dude doesn't just make hip-hop. I mean, he's got to have what he needs to get the sounds he hears in his head. That has always meant a studio full of stuff, if you want to make electronic music. If you want to make folk music, get guitar or piano and go to work. I have tremendous respect for him, even if I don't like all of his music.

  • @btdub73 yeh man me too... subjective opinion i guess..

  • Anyone know what that chord progression is?

  • what program?

  • This is immensely useful.

  • J.R.!!!! Major Motivation!

  • (JJJJJ.R.) J.R. Rotem is a beast!

  • shock g ftw

  • When i was in Middle School, I thought that Rappers make beats and music using FL Studio in a Virtual Windows XP box since Rap music sounded so simple in 2005.

  • @judenihalmusic a lot of proffesional producers do make music in FL studio

  • Nice

  • This guys beats are FIRE!

If you love Hip-Hop, please check us out :)

  • what type of instrument is that on 3:54 and what keyboard is he using

  • @CreationsAmz it is a lead synth and he is playing a roland fantom g8

  • dope

  • Nice

  • wow, he said he was going to do an arpeggio, but then he just played to chords.

  • Anyone know the name of the synth sound used at 4:13 mark (that westcoast sound)?

  • @Bin3k3 i was goin to ask the same question lol

  • @Bin3k3 in reason its called: Gangsta lead :)

  • bla bla bla, all the producers in hip hop say the same shit

  • i think he's smart.

  • whats the old school instrument at 4:18

  • cool i got a few beats to for who ever

  • JR speaks the truth, although I would highly recommend any producer to take some time to really learn the piano, it will help your melodies. ANY beginners have ?'s or want tips, message me, I'll get you started. I got like 12 beats on my channel, and more on my website. Thanks

  • what's the blue keyboard with the old school sounds called

  • Comment removed

  • @batchmister1 korg triton extreme 76

  • and do i have to follow the sound of today. i like old skool 90's stuff and early 2000's and invent a new sound or music i feel in me to be successful to put out there. and how mush to is a price to sell an average good beat, instrumental, or song you produce for them. give me a number?

  • @Ruddteen If you lease a beat to somebody you can charge from 25-30 dollars if you sell exclusive rights to one of your beats you can go from as very little as 200 dollars to 400 for an average rapper. If you have a mainstream artist wanting your beat the sky is the limit on that.

  • That was fun to watch. finally simple and easy instruction. i was searching everywhere. well thanks. the questions that i have right now is.How mush equipment and what equipment do i need starting from scratch, for example computer with what tools what type of keyboard what wire connections to plug into one, speakers?,microphone?

  • What program does he use? ( I use Studio Fl but that fucked up )

  • @MrKidRulez YOO he uses Ableton, its not so different from FL except the fact that you cant use FL on MAC. It doesn't matter what program you really use, you just need to know how to "USE" it.

  • @PhreshMajor You can if you get that Windows add on (which that seems unnecessary) - but I've heard that ImageLine is actually developing an FL Studio for Mac now which is awesome lol - Bout time right - I totally agree with you though its about how you use what you got instead of getting a bunch of equipment you dont know how to use properly

  • @PhreshMajor

looks like pro tools to me..

  • @PhreshMajor In this vid hes using Pro Tools 7 not Ableton Live

  • @MrKidRulez What he's using in the video is pro tools

  • brilliant producer jr!

  • i think rapping is easier than producing i takes me about an hour to write a song but ages to make the beat

  • @YCISTHEBEST Depends on your mood. For me the hardest part is to find the sounds i wanna use!

  • @PhamiBeats i find the drums easy but building around that takes me a while to do

  • @YCISTHEBEST Thats funny cus I always found writing a song a lot harder then producing it. I can knock down 3 to 4 beats in a day while when Im writing, am only able to write a song an entire day.

  • @OnlyRawAudio we all make music in different ways

  • fact!

  • what software is he using

  • @jaycbeatz1 It's an older version of Pro Tools. Not sure which one exactly.

  • @AdamRuiz14 kk thanks looking to get it how much isit

  • @jaycbeatz1 Around $600 for a copy of PT10. Idk if PT9 is still the same price. It depends what you want the program to use it for. They have free trials of programs like Pro Tools floating around so I would try those out first and get a feel for one.

  • thanx bro i found it useful in my own ways!!! thanx again

  • j r rotem is the producer of palmy&g.mc-boom

  • i will give my life to hear 2pac kill this beat!!!

  • wooo he's remaking the beat to I GET AROUND by TUPAC!!!! love that song. his lil live remix of it is sick, too

  • His eyes are mad close together.

  • One one hand, I liked the chords, but he used a very-overused ROMpler to make everything.

  • jr rotem is probably the most versatile producer in hiphop

  • I really don't mean to be an asshole, but this guy is a completely shit producer. Listen to what real producers make, not pop crap. Check out Daft Punk, Justice or Deadmau5 and you'll hear the difference.

  • @Schabiq u must not know about jr rotem. He producer tracks on all game's and 50 cent albums. He is very versatile. He use to be dr. dre's ghost producer

  • very similar electric piano part to big poppa just saying

  • @jbeers397 The extra synth part in "Big Poppa" was supposedly made with a Casio--I don't know which model. But, Casio did make a few "pro"-level boards, like the VL/CZ/FZ series.

  • staccato not arpeggio fyi

  • sounds kinda like lotus flower bomb eh

  • put less gel in your hair hahaha

  • yarn

  • this did worked with allot stars, he knows allot about music.

  • this dude knows exactly what he's talking about.

  • @glasspig you dont no shit about music.

  • Comment removed

  • @PhreshMajor

i know all the chords, all the scales, and how to play more creatively than you or this trust-funded idiot in this video.

you listen to music that is literally controlled by Disney.

  • theese are your skiils? you ow me a studio

  • DAMN..HE SAID OLD SCHOOL..THE EARLY 90'S..LOL..

  • How is he recording to his DAW in notes and not waves, how do you do that?

  • @mrbiggbeats MIDI

  • @mrbiggbeats what do you mean? Waves are files like mp3s. Notes are what he composes or rips from a sample. Some producers dont always compose their own tracks so they use samples. Does that answer your question?

  • @audioproducer88 OK basically I use the pencil tool and just write in the notes, Im not good with keys so this is how I make my music, so what I wanted to see is if you can do the same when using a keyboard/workstation? am I able to use the pencil tool or do I need to use the keys to trigger sound? I mean does it work just like a vst?

  • @mrbiggbeats When you're clicking the notes with the pencil tool, that's not a wave it's MIDI, just you're inputing the MIDI data with a mouse instead of a keyboard.

MIDI is data which tells other instruments (software or hardware) which notes to play, as well as lots of other information, it's not an actual recording of sound.

  • @alexvegas Ok cool, thanks a lot man

  • What people need to learn is the language of music. Its not so much learning how to play an instrument as its having a strong understanding of how music works and being able to accurately manifest the melodies in your head to sound. This is why learning some music theory is crucial-moreso than just learning an instrument. Overall, a producer doesn't have to know how to play a guitar or piano, but he should know how to tell a guitar or piano player what he wants in a clear and accurate fashion.

  • Having a strong sense of musician-ship is what separates a producer from a "beatmaker". It doesn't necessarily mean being able to play an instrument so much as it means having the ability to communicate your ideas efficiently and effectively to other musicians, since, as the producer, you're the one in command. Some old producers didn't know how to play an instrument worth a lick, but they knew how to get precisely what they needed from, say, a pianist or guitarist without wasting much time.

  • GOOGLIE EYE

  • he would be a great music teacher

  • cross eye

  • Whether or not I like his music, it is kinda cool to see his studio and how he works. I like the jazzy stuff tho lol!! Check out Broken Tongues!

  • the first words that came out of his mouth represent exactly why music sucks now

  • @glasspig what you mean? l

  • @swissbeats23

    lol

what if a doctor said you don't have to know anything about medicine now to be come a doctor.....???

  • @swissbeats23

back when the music industry had more money behind it, the producer commanded his engineers and musicians.

but now with the technology, the engineer/musician/producer is the same brain.

so thats why it's important to know how to play an instrument.

  • @glasspig

ohhhh well i make some sick ass beats and i play the piano and guitar plus i knw how to mix i know how to right just normal tabs and my music group is way different then most i put so much into music i dnt jus use sounds i also make them from bottom up i completely agree wit you most ppl who get millions of veiws beats are way overrated and they are copied over and over but for the music he is making really tho its hard to grow cuz hes music is very plain and catchy

  • @glasspig i got 7years behind my belt wit music and ppl forgot how to be themselfs i love all music except country not a fan but even then country is turnin into rock wish music was like for there message instead of there ways about the music. hope i make it and soon i will have a album and wichita KS will be noticed!!! but you are RIGHT 100% im still goin to take music class and learn to write music and to master better im a very open producer which most are not

    thanks for replying btw

  • @glasspig I disagree, Kanye Wests beats are amazing but he doesn't play an instrument. I'd say the reason a lot of new music sucks is because there is a lack of creativity and originality, one person does something different and then everyone follows it and get famous from it!

  • @TheR8Driver1 true he doesnt know alot on how to play music be he is his own tho and what glasspig is saying that ppl need and should learn because it will keep alive what had started music be puttin lil notes and things they used to do to better grow are music but if they dont knw how to make or play instruments then we will lose thos things and its goin to trans over to midi im 1 tht doesnt want tht. i love classic music and we all shud learn how to play cuz it opens way more doors

  • @swissbeats23 I understand what your'e trying to say as I play instruments and compose music myself. But I also understand that actually playing instruments in not for everyone and you can still be just as brilliant and creative by using samples or getting other musicians to play for you. Like J.R says, as long as you can create the sound or the picture that is in your head it doesn't really matter whether you play an instrument or not.

  • @TheR8Driver1 agreed

  • @TheR8Driver1 agreed

  • @TheR8Driver1

yea kanye's stuff was always okay, not as good as J Dilla though as far as that style of making music goes.

But the best thing to do is just learn an instrument, because you'll always get more out of it than not knowing how to play one.

  • @glasspig I agree that being able to play an instrument is an advantage in a way as obviously you can play your own melodies etc. But the only thing a producer needs is an imagination and creativity, I've seen people on youtube who make good beats and they don't play instrument.. they just use mouse. I've also seen extremely talented musicians who can play pretty much any song, but don't have the imagination to producer their own music.

  • @TheR8Driver1 Yes, That's true, few friends of mine, they make music using ''pencil tool'' by just simply ''drawing'' the chords (melodies) in, as for me, i cant do that, too complicated, even tho i have no problem playing keyboard and just recording my chords (melodies)

  • producer isnt always a musician, they can be like, this is hot, or this is hot, based on knowledge.

  • @rolande1990

lol yeah good luck trying to go the easiest laziest route possible.

nothing beats learning an instrument and then going from there

  • @TheR8Driver1 How would know if Kanye plays an instrument when you're not even sitting in the studio to see how he produces his music? Producers do both sampling and play instruments.

  • @audioproducer88 Actually I've seen videos on Youtube and he doesn't play an instrument. All of his beats are made from samples and producers do not always play instruments. But that doesn't make them any less talented.

  • @glasspig Being a producer and a musician are two different things though. You can be both, but you can also be one or the other.

  • @LavLTC

that used to be true, a long time ago.

now you look on youtube and you only see one person now doing everything.

so nowadays theres really no advantage to just trying to be one and not all of the above

  • @glasspig actually ur missing the point, a producer does not need to be a musician. a producer's most important talent, is knowing good music, and knowing how to get that sound out of his head by any means necessary. in most other genres outside of hip hop the producer usually directs the band in the studio to play what he is envisioning. So once again a producer does not need to be a musician. but he can be if he wants to. This has been this way for many decades.

  • @RapidTraxx I couldn't agree more.

  • @RapidTraxx No one knows what the true role of a producer is these days. It's become very blurred, mainly because a lot of producers these days can play instruments and act as the engineer within the studio too. The true role of a producer WAS usually just to influence the creative direction of an artist/ band. If he could play instruments and mix too then bonus. Or there would be a seperate engineer and session musician(s).

  • @RapidTraxx I do call myself a producer but that is simply because it is much quicker and easier than saying 'composer/ remixer/ mix engineer/ musician' lol. Although I feel I can 'produce' someone pretty well if i'm working with them, a singer for example. But its certainly a plus to know your way round a mixing desk and other studio gear, keyboard, bass, and guitar etc, because you can obviously do everything yourself rather than sourcing mix engineers, session players and so on!

  • @MrMikkiFunk no disagreement here. i'm just saying a producer doesn't have to be a musician. however for some there is a great benefit if they are their own session musicians.

  • @MrMikkiFunk i do all those same things myself as well. but my statement is because some producers like to put themselves on a pedestal because they can compose a beat rather than using samples or hiring session musicians. i just wanted to key in on what JR was saying that a producer does not need to be a musician. he just has to have a great ear for music, and the know how to get that sound out of his head, and into your speakers.

  • @RapidTraxx Well said. School these dudes. Also, producers do a lot more than music, they also manage the production time and budget, if there's no assistant producer. People are very misinformed about the job of a producer.

  • @glasspig your ignorant.

  • @DjRippee You're*

  • @DjRippee

why because i don't agree with music that is literally controlled by Disney?

i know more about music than you will ever be bothered to learn

  • @glasspig I'd agree with several of the other responses... if anything, musical ability as a producer is a symptom of modern production techniques (ie making the entire track 'virtually' rather than using live musicians) and a relatively new phenomenon.

  • @glasspig lol! word!

  • @glasspig lol! word

  • @glasspig To be a movie director you don't know how to act, you just have to know how to push actors to give their best performance.

  • Comment removed

  • @glasspig I was drawing a comparison between what a music producer does in a studio to what a director does behind the camera on a movie set. It was an analogy and not meant to be taken in a literal sense. Quincy has many skills that are no longer crucial for a successful producer to posses, composing orchestra parts by hand with a pencil and paper is one example.

  • @glasspig tht comment only shows how much u think u know, how smart u think u are and how much better than everyone else u wish you.

  • @JiMMyJaM08061991

oh yeah i mean you are so right of course people who literally can't reference middle C on a keyboard are the same people who make Quincy-Jones-like-masterpieces. god how dumb of me...

and what do u know again???

  • @glasspig but he's right... a producer doesn't necessarily have to play instruments... the meaning has changed over time, and I think now people either don't give beat makers enough credits or ask too much of a producer.

I play several instruments, so I should hate, but it is what it is... Quincy Jones could play the trumpet, but majority of the music he created had very little or nothing to do with trumpet... he would have been equally effective as a producer without the trumpet.

  • @experiment0003

quincy jones was knowledgable about music in general, regardless of knowing how to play the instruments he arranged music for.

thats not the point. the point is that this guy in the video should know that millions of impressionable kids trying to be famous or the next p diddy for no reason and are watching this and he is sending the wrong signal by saying that you don't have to play or know anything about music to produce music

  • @glasspig I think what you said about quincy being knowledgeable about music in general was JR's point. I'm sure he didn't mean any completely clueless douche could be a producer. You don't have to be a classically trained pianist or a virtuoso guitarist to be a producer... especially in this day and age as it relates to Hiphop music.

  • @experiment0003

    i never said "classically trained"

but you do have to be trained in some way.

    I mean c'mon.

name a single successful music producer that doesn't know anything about music.

  • @glasspig exactly my point! You have to be knowledgeable about music in general... that's like a general criteria to being a successful producer. But knowing how to play an instrument isn't the same thing as being knowledgeable about music!

  • he sais 'Its to much for some people'. Sir. making beats is however YOU the producer whant it to sound not what other people whant!!

  • snoop dogg - serial killer melody...this melody is also used on california vacation by the game ft. snoop and xzibit. and now guess what. this dude right here did the beat lol

  • i love the beat at 2:26, wish he would of just kept playing it

  • does anyone know how to do the old school 90's beat at 4:16

  • i want his studio

  • Hey bro.. what are you using to record???

  • hs80s ftw!

  • @mantomoe retard.

  • @RoboticusMusic Whats wrong with you, dont know what studio monitors are? Little cunt.

  • @mantomoe LOL FTW SHITTY ASS MONITORS cunt.
