@mrshumel...or it could have been that peoples temple operated in the 60's-70's a period wh ere people set about trying to rediscover and re-evaluate the world ,where america was coming out of the hysteria of Mc carthyism , the civil rights movements and the assination og jfk, martin luther king Jr the war in Vietnam, and the boom of the hippie subculture and freedom to protest .It had nothing to do with poor education or self esteem. These people were trying to start a new life.
Now here is something I have always wondered and I don't know if maybe, somebody can enlighten me...WHY was it just about every time you saw Jim Jones, he had those black sunglasses on? If he ain't blind, why is he wearing dark glasses all the time? Cuz he's got to hide something behind them?
I don't think the people who followed this man were stupid or ignorant. I think he was a charismatic, powerful speaker who appeared to offer something truly good and fair in a bleak world. By the time cracks appeared, it seems he'd put measures in place to make it very difficult for anyone to leave - and when they'd given all to the church what had they left to go home to anyway? I think this is a lesson in how religion/politics/public speaking can be used to control large groups of people.
@jkjerome1 Still the fact remains he had somehow convinced over 200 people at least, to kill for him and then die alongside him...normal people don't do that, normal people don't think 900 people drinking poison is 'not suicide'. I can kind of understand how it happened in the beginning, but the fact remains he was 1, against 900 others, but he managed to get his own army built up against anybody left with a mind to get out.
@TheBookWorm1718 Define normal people! Apparently normal people are capable of staggering behaviour when the necessary buttons are pushed. Religion and public speaking appear to be rather powerful tools for changing what normal people consider as acceptable. e.g. I'll bet not one of those women would have considered administering poison to their babies *before* they spent time in The Peoples' Temple.
In the book of Matisyahu 24:4-5 (Matthew 24:4-5) Yeshua (Jesus) Be careful not to let anyone deceive you. Vs.5 because many will come in my name and say, 'I am the Christ and they will deceive many people. In Matisyahu 24:11 (Matthew 24:11) Many false prophets will rise, and shall deceive many. Jim Jones is a good example of that scripture.
It's is obvious that these people that Jim Jones deceived were very uneducated and had very low self esteems. It is very important that people who are Followers of Yeshua Hamashiach (Jesus Christ) read and study the Bible for themselves. I believe if these people had a true relationship with Elohim (God) and studied the word of God for themselves Jim Jones would not have been able to deceive these people like he did.
@MrShmuel32 Self-esteem has no plural, you are obviously very educated. Stop holding yourself above people. You can learn from all, if not what to do then what not to do. Be humble!
I cannot agree with you! Sorry there was more then 1000 people!!!
914 died. They cannot be all stupid as you say! It is just not possible for the fact that what they have done in Jonestown in their life! They build a fantastic village with gas and electric and made an utopia a new society that actually turned out to be a nightmare!
But on the respect of the victims we need to see their goals and dreams! That is very rude to say they all were stupid uneducated!
Jim jones just blows me away with what he did that day. I want to know what was his right in doing that! It's usless being 30 years later but still. How could he do that to so many children and ugh. One thing always remeber them. We can't forget them along with all the other victims of the world.
Jim Jones looks like a character straight from the Adams Family ... a mixture of Gomez Addams, Charlie Manson and those snakes for Christ type of dudes ... creepy fella ... how could anyone trust someone like him ...!!!? ... it escapes me completely ...
PT Barnum,,,said it best, there is a fool born every SECOND. One would think that the "SO CALLED ELITE" that makes up the ranks of Scientology, would know better, but seem to be dumber than the everyday chumps following clowns like Jim Jones & Tony Smith.
cmon look at them they look happy! what a beautiful rainbow of color! there is some mistery behind that story! could not be true that they kill themself or only one man alone could convince them to do it

This "church" was not really about religion, it was a cover for a socialist "utopia" lead by one insane megalomaniac!
