I love to see someone working out with an old blade. Swords aren't happy unless they're flourished occasionally, and maybe cut- well, at least the odd melon...
A bummer for me is that a lot of these sabers have an asymmetrical guard, so they they would be awkward for left-handed individuals such as myself. I could probably have a left-handed model commissioned for me back in the day, but I would be hard pressed to find such a service now.
Hickok, defenseless law mowers, poor unassuming pumpkins, albino squirrels... And now you viciously dismember an innocent watermelon. Your a revengeful sort of guy, sir! But I love your videos!
I'm looking to get a saber that was in use by the Polish Cavalry in WWII. I realize it's going to be expensive, but it'll all be worth it! (My great grandfathers served in the Polish Armed Forces in the East) And I'm VERY Polish, and just love anything from the great country! (I'm also looking to get a wz. 29)
@piecrust21 A sword is meant for mostly stabing and a saber is mostly meant for slashing, so usually the saber would be more sharp on the edge and a sword is more sharp on the tip.
It was also curved so, when swinging/slicing, the blade would not bluntly meet flesh and bone, but would cut and slide off. Similarly with the japanese katana and other cavalry swords.
Did anyone else get all excited when reading the title of this video, and hope that Hickok had found a zombie sith lord on his compound and had commandeered his weapon?
this was made by my family this is something I've wanted to come across since i was little boy. you my sir have one of few that has had contact with my great great great grand father's sword.
C'mon, Hickok. Being the Tennessean that you are, you should know better than to say "Civil War". "War Between the States" or "War of Yankee Aggression" would be the proper term.
upon reading the title of the video, the first thought I had running through my head was a joke video for starwars, where you would be playing around and reviewing a plastic light saber haha
How much does a saber like that cost? I was in the Cavalry back when I was in the service. I would love to get my hands on a civil war cavalry saber. Also where is a good place to purchase one?
IDK if anyone has said but Love your dogs name, fitting for you, I think I've watched 50-60 of your vids can't get enough, Its made me buy another Ruger and thinking of getting a Glock 27 2 go with my Ruger SR40 SR40c 38spl and Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380, Thank You for all the info
Great video again and interesting throwing a sabre in there instead of a firearm. I caught the part about you being 6'8", I thought a lot of handguns looked small in your hands. Keep up the great work, keeps me entertained when the Army doesn't have me doing anything.
Vary nice video! I almost got one of them when I was in Chattanooga. I picked up some bullets and ball fragments though. Oh the history, it gives me a feeling that well I only can describe as Total Awe! Have you ever been to the National Cemetery in Chattanooga? Its the only one that has German POW's buried at it. It has vets from the Revolutionary through Gulf War. I went there to see the grave of my relative James J. Andrews. I never will forget the felling when I touched his headstone.
That is a really Cool Saber. Gee, from the Civil War period too. It was good to see Gunner too..he sure has grown. So, like may be you could use the Saber to carve your Thanksgiving turkey???
LOL i was wondering why the watermelon was making a metallic noise when it kept hitting the ground, and then I realized it was because of all the shell casings. hahaha
@speedyelwood I would ask how you could be so blunt as to miss such a BLATANT STAR WARS REFERENCE, but then I remember this is a Youtube comment, and I should not expect more brilliance than I would from an ashtray.
@lolcatofawsumd Yes, what the imperials did was horrendous, but let us be glad those dark days happened a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
@hickok45 excuse me Mr. Hickok but i think you should have used water to wipe the blade first (to get rid of the sugar and other stuff from the watermelon), wipe off the water then oil it
@Nicholas1350 , Ah, that's the beauty of Ballistol. It's not a typical oil that just lies there on top of the metal or water. It actually "emulsifies," as they say, with water. I don't rely on that, but it's just different stuff. I don't think I could ever go back to regular oil.
@ufosorufhoax13 After years of senseless melon slaughters, I would take out any random watermelon I came across also! Never know when one of those is going to be part of the family vine, and looking to do a drive-by.
i was surprised when you said it wasnt a replica..i know you take care of it..but personally if i owned that blade it would be in a shadow box mounted on my wall...not out in the woods slaying watermelons lol
@escapefate702, I'm from Northern Ky, so I've grown up in the "middle," more or less. I find both sides and both arguments interesting. Slavery makes it tough to sympathize with the South, of course, but the reasons for the war were far more complex than that. If it was merely to preserve slavery, it would be a no-brainer.

also, you have to consider the fact that a saber does not have a bevel such as one you'd find on a pocket knife.
It's "sharpness" has more to do with the geometry of the blade than anything.
