@dachshund99 No, vertical angles don't add up to any specific number. They are just equal. But, two angles that "lie along" a line add up to 180 degrees (together making a straight angle), and I use that fact in this proof.
This is, again, where we have several different terms referring to the same thing. "Vertical angles" is also common terminology for "vertically opposite angles".

@dachshund99 When you add all FOUR angles they of course add to 360. I thought you meant the one pair of vertical angles.

@MsSwaglover Because when two angles are lined up along a straight line (together they form a straight angle), then that is 180 degrees.
