  • Hi everybody ..

maybe this kind of vid is not the first one but its the first one ive seen.

so all i wanna say is I LIKE it ...

  • Haha, the hand idea actually started with MadV, which is why there are so many videos like this out there. :] He made a video writing something inspirational on his hand and told everyone to do the same- it was kind of like the 5 fact thing except meaningful.

  • simple, to the point. I like it. More important than the commercialism of "giving back", after watching your videos for as long as I have, I know you mean it. And your sincerity is what makes this vlog original. thanks for posting this, man

    ~Samar

  • That's always the struggle I have with some charity, is the sometimes blatant " Look what I'm doing" mentality. It's a fine balance for sure.

    THANK YOU!

  • Thanks for posting this as a response, Gary. I was really looking to see video responses of people telling their stories of how they showed compassion to those who are suffering in poverty. It doesn't have to be feeding them or giving them loose change (though those are common examples). It could be telling them that they're loved, or giving them flowers. What we want is people finally getting up and doing something! So let's do it! =)

  • You're very welcome!

  • sheesh... this has been watch 761 times. I feel sorry for all of us

  • Thanks for watching!

  • But...I didn't TAKE anything!

  • Nothing?

  • Well, maybe a little...

  • :-D

  • How can you give back when you are sitting on your ass watching American Idol?

  • Thanks for watching.

  • I don't get it, give back what?

  • To society...

  • Goodness goo... look at all those honors! congrats

  • Isn't that something? Yesterday I was on the same "featured" page as Bono internationally!

    Where are my shades? :)

  • Well said!

  • Thank you! :)

  • This is probably your shortest video. *good job* :)

  • There was actually a 30 second clip of me eating a sandwich from a couple weeks ago that was tad shorter!

    Thanks! :)

  • Oh yeah, you're right. :) How could I forget the sandwich?

  • Ha ha.

And trust me, I am not getting paid by Subway! :)

  • Give back...join the army.

  • Be all that you can be.

  • Bingo..you got the spirit.

  • Thanks!

  • Now I keep getting the Trained Monkey message.

  • The need to get new monkeys.

  • I do prefer tiny, gerbil sized, untrained monkeys. *releases trained monkeys into the wild*

  • More of the gerbil talk from you! LOL

  • Rem started it.

  • Let's blame him. He posts less videos than you do!

  • No wait... It was A11en that started it. Rem is innocent.

  • Well, i can't say anything bad about A11en. He's been defending my honored in this comment thread!

  • Oh I have plenty of bad to say about A11en--believe you me.

  • LOL!

  • You only think I post few videos. I have been posting plenty on my other channels.

  • You have other channels?

  • Only six others--all TOP SECRET.

  • Then I'll be sure not to ask abooot them! :)

  • Wow, somebody's mommy didn't tell him that if he didn't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. He just needs a hug.

  • Hug a hater? :)

    ((HUGS))

Not that you're a hater....I just wanted to give you a hug! :)

  • Woo hoo!!! Check out those honors!!! Go anakin go!!!

    You have worldwide honors! awesome!

  • I saw that. What really makes me giggle is that I'm on the same page as Bono!!!

(And all this from 311 views! LOL)

  • i'll make a video as soon as i can get a cam

  • Cool!

  • I am giving back to my society but I won't list how like others did, cause it feels like bragging and somehow diminishes the altruism of it if you tell someone.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. But some people are proud of what they do and hope that others follow suit. Nothing wrong with that.

  • I'm a mean person, but I don't support giving money to Africa.

  • A lot of people feel that way. That's not to say we can't support our own country, a friend in need, or a local community.

  • justify yourself.

  • Sorry, but I hate these kind of videos...

I just don't see how we'll acheive anything other than vain whorage.

  • The idea behind these kinds of videos is to make people stop and think about what they're doing. If we all realize we have the power to make subtle changes in the world, then we can make a change via the ripple effect. This has nothing to do with vanity. I'm sorry that you find such cynicism in a simple project like this.

  • You're not making subtle changes. You are talking about making subtle changes. It takes you roughly three minutes, including upload, to make a video such as this. It looks like you're making a difference, but you're not. If you think you are, I'd like to hear you explain how.

  • It's making people think about what they can do to make a difference. This mentality has to start somewhere.

  • It's already begun. A long, long time ago...

  • And there's nothing wrong with constantly reminding people of it.

  • LOL!

The only thing you're reminding people of is that "they can make a difference". To what? For whom? Why? Videos of this ilk are 30 second efforts in lieu of a profound statement.

If this wasn't about publicity, you wouldn'ta posted all the wonderful honors you have acheived in the sidebar.

That's all I have to say on the subject.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • So you're telling me everything I do need to be along profound statement? Please. It's an abstract concept, nothing more, nothing less.

And what's wrong with posting honors that I'm proud of? Big deal.

    Please just go away.

  • Fair enough...was only criticism; I know a lot of people aren't used to it. You didn't even have to reply.

  • I don't mind a back & forth, but I feel that you're just badgering and nit-picking everything I say. I love intellectual discourse, but what you're doing comes off as trolling my comments and trying to start something, which i have no interest in doing. I believe in constructive criticism, but also in accepting that people have different ideas and opinions that I do. Obviously, you are very cynical. I'm much more interested in striving to make things better, however cheesy that may sound.

  • So am I. I think there are better ways to do that and you should try and accept this without accusing me of being a "cynic", whilst knowing fuck all about who I am.

You are the one who brought in an ad hominem attack, not me, so don't accuse me of having bad intellectual discourse skills.

Criticism comes in many forms; that's what this site is for- and you can either move on or try and call me a troll for disagreeing with you.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • Everyone has a right to their opinion. With that said, it seem as though you expect more of others, than yourself. Do you know "fuck all" about Gary? To have a well formed opinion, wouldn't you need some body of reference, or context? As for your assertion that this site is for "criticism": Isn't that in itself a cynical statement. If this site is "about" criticism, why would profundity have any relevance?

  • I didn't make an ad hominem attack. I didn't make an ad hominem attack. I didn't make an ad hominem attack. I didn't make an ad hominem attack.

I don't know much about him; I would need to if I were attacking his character. I wasn't. I criticised the video.

Criticism is a type of feedback. People put up videos, and there are ratings options, and little boxes where we can type what we thought of the video. To me, saying that this website is for criticism is a pretty accurate assertion.

  • You used vanity as a descriptive. You imply he is dishonest, when you question his motivation. Since you have no frame of reference, that clearly is emotional rhetoric, that brings his character into question. By definition, that would be an ad hominem attack and make you a cynic. Please refer to your preferred dictionary to challenge either of my statements.

  • Allen, some people just have a sour disposition and like to project it onto others. Might be the case with this guy, it might not. Either way, who cares. I think the fact that people are responding mostly poisitively to this is more notable. Like Gary said, reminders like this are a good thing.

Perhaps the motivational nature of this is just one domino tipping over another, so to speak.

    Who knows.

  • Agreed Curt. I guess i'm just easily annoyed by anyone who feels the need to bash someone like Gary. I've tried to reevaluate what community, on YT, really is. I think it's the people we choose to associate with an how WE define it. Even if that is the case, I guess we still have to put up with the neighbors. *sigh*

  • I have worded myself badly in these comments; but I never intended to bash Gary himself. Again, I was talking about the video, and similar videos. I have spoken on kindly terms with him before in comment threads, and I speak in these terms with lots of people on youtube. But when I see a video I dislike, I try and be honest, because without that youtube breaks down and the whole system of feedback means nothing. I would expect the same from you, and from Anakin if you watched MY videos.

  • Before responding to your comments, I watched some of your videos. You are an intelligent young man, with some insightful opinions. I found your comments a stark contrast. I'm not trying to portray you as a bad person. I have bold opinions but try to use discretion when commenting. It's hard to convey intent in text.

  • lol...thanks for your semi-compliment; I appreciate that you were honest and actually took the time to research further. I would say there is contrast, but not that it's "stark". Most of my videos aren't vlogs; so I don't end up saying this kind of stuff on cam.

It probably does look that way. I never intended this to be drama. It was one comment about a genre of video that I mostly loathe. It didn't warrant the stream of response it got; when many positive comments were just ignored.

  • I know I may have sounded rude; but if he hadn't tried to respond to me and explain to me why I SHOULD have appreciated the video then it wouldn't have been this way :D

  • Dude...I wasn't trying to persuade you into my way of thinking...You were asking me questions and I tried to answer them all. I'm the type of guy who likes to have a back and forth with the people who take time to comment on my videos. I don't expect everybody to like what I do, but, I'm going to shut down when an all-out battle ensues. I deal with this drama in my real life on a daily basis, and don't come looking for it on YouTube. My intention is purely to bring some positivity to this site.

  • Yeah, surely my comments are based on some psychological difficulty I have because anyone who dislikes this video must have a problem.

  • Give back is right! Last year's Idols give back was very inspiring, and I'm looking forward to tonight's show. I may have a response video for you later today... (if I have time...)

  • Thanks Ken!

I was cynical about it at first...but I guess the fact that the #1 show in America chooses to use their voice to do some good...well, it's a start!

  • Whether it's been done before or not, it's always a good sentiment...when these things are done in this fashion. Very few words, yet very powerful and motivational. Anything I'd ever give back would be to the friends and people on Youtube - not YT itself. Though without it, I'd have never met those who are my friends. But if not here then somewhere else and that still counts. THANKS for the reminder to thank my friends.

  • That's kind of what I thought...

I find that at the very least, YT has given us the tools to have this playground to meet our friends. But yeah, emotionally, I'd give back to my friends on here and not GoogleTube itself.

  • I'd love to give back, but I'm still in the middle of taking. So, as soon as I'm finished I'll start doling out what I don't need.

    Is that what you meant?

Since I do NOT watch Idol, I was spared the fake compassion. ((I only *sound* like a bastard, in reality I am only half a bastard)).

    :^)

  • Um....I meant whatever you want it to mean! :)

  • Thanks for the encouragement! If everyone "pays it forward," maybe we could end the war? :D Start a revolution of peace! Woo Hoo! I'm all about it! Ready to jump on the bandwagon!

  • I'm all about the ripple effect in life! :)

  • I paid it forward yesterday at my breakfast burrito place. They gave me a free burrito, so I stuck my five dollars in the pickle jar for medical expenses for the kid who ended up in the hospital. Peace!

  • WAY TO GO! In my mind, it's those little things are what can change the world. Call me idealistic...

  • I never took it. Honest governor i am innoccent.

    Good vid.

  • Innocent until proven guilty, I 'spose. :)

  • Mmm, nice video well made hehe!:))))

  • And short! :)

  • Well, I read Andy's and Lesley's comments before I left mine, not sure what this is about but A LOT of things pass me by these days LOL!:)

  • No...it might be a USA thing. If you look back at my response to Leslie, i explain it all!

(And this video was my subtle way of being abstract and making people think.)

  • I will and it worked!:)

  • GOOD! :)

  • LOL! Have a good day, mine is at that 2:24pm lull period that you get after lunch!:D

  • And mine is at 8:25 AM where I'm still getting motivated for the day!

  • sweetness, good stuff!

  • Thanks! :)

  • You get more out of life when you put something in or give something back. Not sure what you want us to do in terms of here on YouTube? Cheers, Lesley

  • I really just wanted to make people think about ways to give back...and for them to look inside and ask "What do I do? What can I do better?" This was a bit of an art experiment to see if I could make this abstract concept come alive on my channel and let people make it what they want to it to be. :)

  • Ah gottcha, thank goodness I don't have to make a vid response right now! Feeling a little snowed under and very busy on the domestic front. L

  • I know how that goes! And don't ever feel obligated to do anything here on YT. Our lives outside of this site have to come first! :)

  • Hey if you do something good for the environment or humanity you can go to Kinghuman channel and enter free giveaways! Its realy fun stuff and Ive won 3 times now!

Thanks for Giving Back Guys n Gals!

    Helives & FROG

  • Great idea! :)

  • Amen! Giving back is such a simple thing we can do in so many ways!

  • Exactly!

  • I am getting ready to take load to Goodwill. We gave away 8 computer and monitors last week (all working and with all the books and programs that came with them). The recycle group will take the working ones and give to shelters or individuals that don't have one. I wish that when people do donate items to Goodwill, that they are working items (as if they were shopping for them). Why give something that is broke and can't be used? Those items are great for the recycling center.

  • Very true! I never understood why they even sell stuff at the GoodWill that doesn't work?

I can tell you have a very pure heart! :)

  • Thank you Gary for the wonderful compliment. Our Goodwill here don't clean up the items either. When we lived in VA, a handyman volunteered his services to repair the broken items and a local highschool group cleaned items, worked their magic with signs and display. It looked more like a really nice department store. I use to donate my ironing and sewing services to help make the clothes look better. Its so rewarding to serve!

  • The ones around here don't look too bad either. They're not department store quality, but they certainly don't look like a thrift shop either.

  • The ones around here don't look too bad either. They're not department store quality, but they certainly don't look like a thrift shop either.

  • I am in the dark a bit and perhaps stoopid this morning after no sleep- I tried to piece together from the comments what inspired you from American Idol. Please splain it to me my leetle red headed fren.

  • I'm lost like you Lesley.

    So don't worry, you're not alone :)

  • Andy, I just explained it to her above.... Hopefully this makes more sense now. You've done so many vlogs about charity, that I'm sure you'll appreciate this sentiment. :)

  • Thanks for the explanation Gary. Sounds like a good idea to me.

BTW Beatles Day went very well. Some great music as always & we raised over £11,500 for a local Cancer charity. WooHoo :)

  • That's a lot of money Andy! Wow! Way to go! :)

  • I'm not sure if that's the final figure. I think it's possibly the most we've ever raised on the day.

Over the years they've raised over £60,000, which i think is amazing. I'm very proud to have been a part of it over the past 5 years.

I'll post some footage when i get the go ahead & when i've edited it all! :)

  • Way to go! That seems to totally go in line with this idea of giving back! :)

    Looking forward to the footage!

  • As you said in an earlier comment, i'm all for giving something back.

You would have loved Beatles Day. It was probably the best one i've been involved with. Not just because of the money raised, but also because of the standard of music :)

  • Rub it in, why don't you? LOL

And yeah, I'm well aware of all your charitable efforts, so it's cool to see you mix them with something as cool as Beatles Day! :)

  • Sorry Gary, i just couldn't resist it.

I must admit i did think of you on the day & wonder what you would have thought of it all :)

  • I bet I would have been quite pleased! This really has me thinking about looking at the Chicago Beatlefest thing....I hear they have some great music there too.

And I don't blame you for rubbing it in! I would have! :)

  • That Chicago BeatleFest sounds pretty good.

I'm sure you'd enjoy that as well :)

  • Yeah....So far I've always had something going on during that weekend. I really need to get motivated to check that one out.

  • I will splain it to you! .Tonight on American Idol, they're doing basically a charity telethon show called "American Idol Gives Back." They did it last year and made 70 million that went to Africa famine relief as well as helped people still devistated by Hurricane Katrina here in the states. So last night was just normal performances by the contestants, in prep for tonight's big show. One of the singers had "Give Back" written on his hand and showed it to the camera. it reminded me of YT!

  • So i thought I'd just reiterate that "Give Back" sentiment that we should all look at little ways to give back to the Earth, Africa, our community, the Red Cross, homeless shelters, whatever really. This was just my lil' way of making people think using terms they've already seen on YT with the "one word' hand thing that went around last year.

Ah hope that 'splains it to you ma luv.

    xoxoxoxo

    :)

  • thanks for 'splainin' my leetle jeenger beeskit xx

  • I had to re-read "jeenger beeskit" about 4 times before I knew what you were saying...Ginger bisket!? LOLOL Awesome!

  • I have several text books I need to SELL back, but that's not the same thing, I know.

You inspire me to ponder, of course.

    In a healthy way.

    :-)

  • Good! :)

  • I missed Idol tonight. I watched Biggest Loser instead.

    Irony.

  • I love that kind of irony!

  • Always willing to help when I can. Is this a YouTube "group project" you are proposing?

  • Not really. Just a small way to change the world in whatever way we each know how!

  • An excellent proposal. I think the "small' things are often forgotten.

  • Thanks. This really was just to make people think...

  • I wish I had something to give back, but as you already know, I'm picking boogers for money. LOL

  • "Will pick for money?"

Just don't whore yourself out on every street corner, that's all I ask. You're too talented to be a ho fo show. :)

  • Oh, now that I think about it, I am giving away a free webcam to someone who needs it. I have a video up about it that I posted on March 6th, but I haven't had any luck with it yet. I'll post it as a response to this video.

  • Hey--cool idea! :)

  • I give what I can, but hey when you live in a tent in a field and only get $900 a month to live, you can't give much, but i try to give when I can!! more my time and energy!!

  • Time and energy are huge assets!

  • I'm in.

  • Cool. I'll send you the elaborate plans.

Britney Spears will self-destruct in 5 seconds.

  • Promise?

  • That would certainly be giving something back to the world, wouldn't it? LOL

  • I do the most I can to give back. Most of it is giving old clothes to salvation army and other charities. Then at Christmas time I do everything from donating toys to a simple gesture of putting a dollar every time I see a salvation army bell ringer. In all, a little bit goes a long way.

  • Way to go! Every little bit counts.

  • Hey Gary,

as a matter of factO I do plan on giving back this year. I've had so many people out me out in my real life in the last year that I feel it's time to give back. And when you give back you should go big I think because if it means enough to you to give back, it means that whatever the person did for you.....probably meant the world to you!!

    Great video Gary!!

    xoxo

    Lisa~

  • Thanks for the repost! It means a lot!

And I agree with you on your sentiments. It's amazing the help we get throughout the year!

    ((HUGS))

  • Peace to you anakin~

  • To you as well! :)

  • I like to pick ways to give anonymously - it ticks me off when organizations sell my name and they ALL do. So we do donations to goodwill, cash donations to some stuff, and help folks we know when we can. Turns out you can still get a receipt if you walk in with a cash donation to Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, City of Hope and so on. I like that.

  • Very cool! To me all that stuff is so important to do...and I like doing it anonymously as well. I also like helping round people up to do that kind of thing (I help organize a soldier of the month thing each month as well as a Red Cross adopt a family around the holidays) because so often nobody wants to step up to the plate.

  • I try to put in 20 dollars a week at my church.

  • Way to go! That's a lot of money!

  • Talk to the hand! LOL

  • Fo sho.

    :)

  • Good ideas bear repeating. All of us who are alive, sheltered, clothed, and fed have already been given so much. So, time to give back some so that we will know the next generation will have all the opportunities we did. aloha :) ray

  • VERY well said my friend!

  • I give back by writing letters. And I donate to a variety of different charities... as well as homeless people. but, I won't continue because it just sounds like I'm gloating.

  • Gloat away! :)

  • that's why I love you anakin!

  • :-)

  • We give clothing donations to places that help the poor or vets with jobs, clothing, etc. like AmVets, Goodwill..everyone has something in their closets someone else could use. I prefer this over money to countries in Africa because many times war lords or the government take the money or food and it never reaches those it was intended for.

  • That's a very good point, and a point I know that a lot of people brought up last year for the Give Back thing. I agree want to give it on both accounts. My big thing this year has been donating items to troops over in Iraq...giving them something for all they've done.

There's lots to go around but so many who need it.

    :)

  • Because I don't get to see a lot of AI, I am glad to hear that. Oh! The stuff that I received from Amazon yesterday had a bag in it for used cells for the soldiers. I am so doing that.

I did a paper last week on the services provided for vets for career counseling, etc. The reason I mentioned AmVets is because they sponsor many programs for vets and families of vets. Just a thought when you get rid of your old sizes ;0)

    Good message Beaker.. :0)

  • Ah...that's a very good idea! I will def have to get rid of some of the baggy clothes now, won't I? I usually just drop stuff off at the Good Will or St. Vincet DePaul.

  • There's a St.VP that is about to open by me. I have a feeling AmVets is an Ohio org. But it is all good!

You know you got pants sagging in the rear LOL...

  • And I have to get rid of one of my new belts already! FTL....

I think it's all good..especially if we can help our local communities with this as well (and I always think that the Good Will and St.VP are also a good way to recycle and help the Earth!).

    :)

  • Measureeeee yourrrr waist... LOLOL..or get a hole puncher.. hell.. just keep shopping!!

  • I bought it for my old size...duh me!
