Something really needs to be done about the animations, the way they fling about those heavy looking shields as if they were made of paper, and the way they use their gladius and longswords as if they were rapiers looks really weird

this is not bad, but its making a mockery of formation warfare. Romans fought in tight groups and used a gladius for simple swift trusting or overhead bashing motions.

Due to the way Empire total war engine works, it emphasized spectacular 1 on 1 combat with fancy swordsmanship and fancy footwork which just does not jive with the ways Romans fought. If you look at most battle-scenes the heavy roman shields seem to fly about as if they have been made out of paper.

Looks okay... but tbh I'd prefer installing old Rome TW and using the Roma Surrectum II MOD. Problems I have by just watching this video:

1) Roman charge would have been swords down beside their shields ready to thrust out and not being held over their heads.

2) Roman shields are being held wrong, they need to cover the body not be at an angle.

3) Romans fought in close formations, packing the enemy in and stabbing them to death, a loose or broken formation makes this tactic pointless.

Try "SPQR 8.0" for Rome. Its propably the most realistic and the best mod for ROME.

@bzyk36 I did, I think. I used to be a huge fan of SPQR, but it's dead locked into Rome vs everything, fun and challenging but I like a little more depth in my campaigns besides simple war and conquest. I've settled for Roma Surrectum II, just as detailed, large scale and nice Legion system.

Congratulations for this amazing work. Although I have to say that animations are very unrealistic, especially for the Romans. Roman infantry usually advanced together, step-by-step in direction to the enemy, killing everything ahead with their swords with coordinated movements.

LOL, Roman Legionaires fighting out of formation, one on one with barbarians and slashing their gladius around like it's a broad sword. They only used it in thrusting fashion, on the right side of the scutum. Better stick to Roma Surrectum II for RTW, IMO.

It looks great! I think if total war would make a redo version of Rome total war with up to date graphics it would be more succesful than shogun 2 or napoleon.

Anyway, the melee in the game (mod) looks great. Only think to note is romans would never fight that loose against barbarians but in a think formation. But this combat mode looks much more attractic that the original and real :P.

the graphics are good... but if you ask me the melee animations from ETW arent really up to the test :\ i wish they were cos other than that this mod looks awesome but if you see the roman's shields when they are on the charge they are all over the place. hopefully there will be a rome 2 total war one day.... the whole community is screaming for one and sega do not listen

There will be a Rome Total War 2 - they already announced the development of that game like a year ago or so. They just haven't released any info yet - but they admitted that they've already been working on it for some time.
