Kipling was the mirror, not the instigator, of his times - don't blame him for reflecting what he saw all around him!

anyone who thinks Kipling was himself a racist should read "The Ballad of East and West" - and read it ALL, not just the first two lines that eveyone uses to "prove" how racist he was!

You are so right my friend,kipling is the farthest thing from a rascist,it was a different time as well but he did have love for all people it does come out in his poems,but he was no doubt passionatley British,he did only mirror the happenings of his time,but it was a time of empire and ruling the world,this period if we could all admit DID bring nations together,asia meet europe and we are now trying to come to terms with the meetngs of different cultures,it is hard but we will get there,xx

Because a person admires some of Kipling's work, it does not necessarily follow that they agree with his Imperialistic views.

Nor does it mean that they "try to find pride" in Britains appalling colonial past.

Do not confuse a passion for culture with a perverted and misplaced pride in our countrys appalling past.

Moreover do not tar all British people with the same brush!
