The trigger could be when you go up the ladder to that house, by the way. Probably when you do that switch to enable you to climb up there. That seems like a plausible place.
Ah, it's quite simple. After drawing a flare, press the flare key again to throw it away during a long fall. If you hit the ground during the throw away -animation, you can keep moving Lara immediately.
As I said in my previous comment, you throw away a flare as you're about to land a high fall. This will prevent Lara from going through her stumble animation, saving several seconds.

There is supposed to be fire, yes. I guess using that shortcut at 4:27 skips the trigger? I don't really know where the trigger is though.

About the flare cancel, just trow the flare away about 1 sec before you reach the ground.

I've tried that, but she won't ever do it. I've managed to do it by mistake once or twice when the flare was about to go out and she threw it away.
