The great thing about a large ensemble is the fact that it can unleash far more power without sounding forced. It gives a compser or an arranger the opportunity to go from one extreme of softness to the other extreme of very powerful. This is why Beethoven's Ninth and Mahler's symphonies are so effective; imagine this choir accompanied by a symphony orchestra doing this... wow! Having done this kind of thing as a singer and as a musician, it is sooo cool!
