What I don't really understand is why so many conductors insist on rushing through the final minute or two of this piece. As far as I'm concerned, it sounds better when taken at a straight tempo.
I saw him (Eschenbach) many times, In Germany (Hamburg, Kiel) and than here in the US at Carnegie with the Philadelphia. Always most memorable concerts, one was one of the few magic moments (or hours) that were outstanding above all - Mahlers 2d. We went out of that concert (Carnegie Hall) speechless and in tears.
IMO, nobody comes close to Eschenbach with this symphony. I don't like him in many other Mahler works but the guy completely OWNS this piece as well as the 5th.
This is excellent, like all of Eschenbach's Mahler. However in his complete Mahler cycle with the Orchestre de Paris available on Medici, apart from no 2 which I haven't heard, I liked above all his version of nos 3, 4 and 8. For no 5 I prefer his performance with the Philadelphia O. recorded live in Tokyo.
Fabulous performance! In my not-so-humble opinion, it appears that the video producers were influenced by the Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense" movie. Look at the tight close-ups on the musicians, the wardrobe choices for Eschenbach and the musicians, etc.
I was his piano technician for his time here in Houston as artistic director. I go t to know him pretty well. His garb in this video is something he chose on his own during his tenure here. He went from "white tie and tails" to what you see here. Many other conductors have followed his lead.

The end is always great, but I didn't really like the rest... It's really slow, calm, we have to wait a lot for the great parts!

What a great horn section! This is a very strenuous symphony, and hitting all of those high A's at the end of the piece takes a lot of endurance.

Good recording, but Bruno Walter's interpretation is better for this piece.

@MichaelSS1 No, really, Bruno Walter was friends with Mahler AND did the piano reductions to Mahler's symphonies.

Horn section ! Atteeeeeention !
STAND !!!
And then comes Mahler's peace after the storm, a pianissimo sforzato that summons such hope from a man's heart.
This is classical music how it should be.
